Walleye is king in my area, most my buddies think bass are trash fish, to the point of, just kill them if you catch one.

is this common in some areas???

fir the record, I really enjoy bass fishing, and don’t really care what they think.
is this common?

Can't stand walleye..... so boring to fish for... just not my style.  They are my "kill them if you catch em" fish, they do taste good...

It's wild but I meet a surprising amount of folks here that ridicule bass fishing, as well as a surprising amount that keep them to eat, too. It irks me but again that's why I try to find totally unoccupied water when I can. Easier said than done in DFW.

Ridicule bass fishing in Texas ! Get a rope.

So in the Midwest, walleye is king and they ridicule bass anglers.

In the Northwest, salmon is king and they ridicule bass anglers.

In Gulf Coast/Florida, saltwater fishing is king and they ridicule bass anglers.

I sense a pattern...

I live in So Cal (work in salt water fishing) where 20 of the 25 biggest Bass in history have been caught and it STILL feels like salt water fishing is king! We do have a very healthy respect for our Bass fishing though. The city lakes and water authorities however... not so much.

I don’t believe in “trash” fish

if they are non native and damaging the eco system then they are harmful invasives that should be eliminated

but any native fish will find it’s niche

The only time I was ever ridiculed over a fish was when I tried showing off to my bass buddies the gorgeous 6”-8” native brook trout I caught  ?

Neither do I.

Many years ago I had a friend who was a respected fisherman.  He was well known as a fly fisherman and a saltwater striper fisherman. We worked together and he would invite me on many trips. I learned a lot from him.

On one trip we fished the Letort in Carlisle, PA which is one of the finest limestone trout streams in the nation. We were camping on the stream and at night we were joined by a group of fishermen two of whom were also well known fly fishermen and authors. Many of you would readily recognized their names but I won't drag them into this conversation.

A conversation started about which fish was the better fighter and brown trout was the group favorite. They turned to my friend who had not offered an opinion and asked him his opinion of the best fighting fish. He replied "pound for pound the carp is the best fighting fresh water fish there is".

There was total silence. These guys knew how good my friend was and no one was going to challenge him.

BTW carp are great fighters. ?

I could see it.  I do ridicule catfish anglers, myself.  They're the dung beetles of the water.  ?

My brother-in-law ridicules me for bass fishing.  He calls it boring.  He'd rather cast a stinkbait and drink beer in a folding chair.  But he's army and ridicules me for my haircut and thinks I'm too skinny.  Ridicule is just his way of letting me know he cares about me.

Thanks for that. I just crossed off catfish from the menu for eternity.

I've gave great thought to this.

(1) Never once has anyone ever ridiculed me for Bass fishing, not once.

(2) I can't think of a single reason to care or pay mind to what others deem as a preferred specie to pursuit.

My youngest brother is a golfing finatic and I at 61 have never once picked up a gulf club.....I really like that little guy.

The pattern I see is that many people that look down on bass tend to be close minded people that think their favorite fish is better than bass in every single way possible. People are free to think what they want but I won't invite anyone fishing with me who looks down on what I like to fish for whether I am fishing for tiny fish, bass, or fishing for sharks that weigh several hundreds of pounds.

Carp are highly underrated fish. They give a good fight, grow large, and are common in many places across the USA. They can be very picky at times so they can present a challenge to the best of fishermen. With that said pound for pound a peacock bass fights harder than a equal sized carp but both fish are fun to catch so I am grateful when I catch either fish.

The anglers that frown on bass here very likely never specifically target them either.  They catch them on accident while they are targeting something else.  Its kind of how I feel about northern pike here.  I never target them but I catch a lot of them targeting bass.

I don't personally know anyone who ridicules me for bass fishing though.  In fact, I have turned several people I know on to bass fishing over the years.  My own Father and brother never bass fished until I started taking them with me.  I also have a co-worker who grew up in North Dakota and he was a die hard walleye angler until he met me 12 years ago.  He loves to bass fish now.

You mostly fish freshwater so you have not encountered enough saltwater fishermen that think their favorite fish are the best of the best and that bass are nothing special. Many saltwater fishermen where I live have no respect for bass fishing, these are the type of fishermen I will never invite fishing. At this point in my life I have fished long enough and caught enough memorable fish that I now fish for whatever I want, however I want, whenever I want. One weekend I might go micro fishing for tiny fish, another weekend I might fish for bass, another weekend I might fish for sharks, I fish for what makes me happy and could care less what others think is the ''best'' fish to fish for.

I would just like to state, as I did in the beginning, I don’t really care what anybody else thinks about it. I enjoy bass fishing, and to each there own. Love all the responses.

No, nothing new, but walleye fishing appears to attract the highest amount of stupid.
I even met few who claimed to have killed muskies because muskies eat walleyes…

This behavior is ludicrous.  Does this justify bass fishermen killing walleye simply by deeming them "trash fish?  I certainly hope not.

I have caught plenty of gar, gaspergoo, and jackfish which are all considered undesirable in my area.  I simply unhook them and let them go.  Poor fish doesn't know what species I am fishing for.

Bass is king. But I could also get addicted to stripers, inshore species and even peacocks if I lived in So FL.  I've never been the kind of guy who could be good at a lot of things, so I decided I would specialize in bass. My buddy fishes the same reservoir I fish. If he doesn't have a bass in about an hour he'll bust out the crappie rods and troll. Nothing wrong with that. But I get little satisfaction in trolling for crappie. I only do it when I'm with him. Plus I don't have a Bass Tracker with a variable speed trolling motor. I don't even have electronics.

I musta missed this specific comment but I completely agree.  Its nothing but an uneducated knee jerk reaction and very likely illegal too.

My brother-in-law ridicules me for bass fishing.  Calls it boring and says it's just a bunch of pretentious, lonely men casting all day.  To him, real fishing involves stinkbait, a folding chair, and beer.  But he's army.  He picks on me for my hair cut and how skinny I am.  I give back by asking if he knows any marines, and if so, could he get me an autograph?  And I call catfish "the dung beetle of the sea".

My wife thinks we don't get along.  I think we both enjoy just barely tolerating each other.  He's good people.

Probably right about the pretentious and lonely men part, definitely right about the casting all day. But calling it boring: them's fightin' words ?

A few of my buddies worked for Cabela's here in Nebraska years ago (corporate HQ). They were all die-hard walleye fishermen.

One of those guys actually purchased a lodge in Canada, and we still get up there now and then. It's a trophy walleye fishery...and they absolutely slay the "Eyes." I like to eat walleye, but fishing for them bores the hell out of me. I'll go, and it's great to hang with friends, but I'd rather be chasing bass, or even Musky / Pike.

To each his own. Doesn't bother me a bit.

Brother and I took my Dad to South Dakota last spring to chase smallies. We had a BLAST! Caught tons of fish.

Same here. One of my best friends fished Mac every weekend and I went out with him. Enjoyed it because it was different. But I would much rather be chasing bass and pike.?

I visited the tropics quite a bit before that stuff started and the fishing was phenomenal but still prefer Bass fishing over salt water.

Most of the natives laugh at Bass fishing.

I live in ND and can tell you walleye fisherman are by and large the biggest sissies in the fishing community. The only thing a walleye has going for it is it’s table fare. Probably the least exciting fish to fish for. They bite light, fight light and boring fishing methods to catch them. I guess that’s why the die hards have to hate on other fish I guess??‍♂️ IDK it doesn’t make sense but they are the only ones in the fishing world that get so butt hurt. Very annoying
