Trying to find a cheap (50ish or below) frog reel for my father in law to frog fish with. He isn’t one to spend much on freshwater, but he liked fishing frogs last fall but I told him his zebco 33 combos won’t get the job done.

Im giving an Abu  pro max 7’ MH that was gathering dust. Hoping to find a cheap real that’ll get the job done.

No experience with the Black Max (low profile reel), but the older aluminum framed Trion is a pretty good reel and you should be able to find one for $50 or less.

Give him one of your's, you upgrade. Make the Father in law happy, makes the wife happy. You get a new reel. Triple win in my book.

I'd vote for a used Green Curado.

That will work.

I was actually talking about the LP one, which like many other than Shimano or Daiwa of the time, is a rebranded Korean Pinnacle, so any of those will work as well.

My bad for not being clear enough.  I have experience with round Black Max reels, but not the low profile Black Max reels.  The Black Max and Morrums are my only round reels other than an old 5001C. Ambassadeur.  I did know you were talking about low profile reels.

My only experience with reels that have 'Pinnacle' on the box is the Primmus Xi HS.  Liked them well enough to have 3 of them.  Very nice reels.

The older Trion isn't the lightest reel nor is it the prettiest, but mine really performs on the 6'10" HF I have it mounted on.

BPS Pro Qualifier. They will be about that price in a couple of weeks during the sale.

It’s your father in-law, give him a reel you know he will like.

Up your budget to $75, lots of good reels available.

I'd look at a Daiwa Fuego or Shimano SLX for a little more money personally.

I may just get a Daiwa Fuego. Those are my go to for my own fishing.

I have this reel in 6 speed and love it. I also have a few different Tatula varieties and I feel if your good bumping up to a Fuego your father in law will be very pleased and probably never wear it out. Either or will be a good fit but I’m a big fan of the fuego mag force Z braking system.

This is my frog reel, gets the job done, but it isn’t pretty, makes a ton of noise when casting,

So all told, turns out my wife was less than thrilled me and her daddy stuck a Abu Garcia pro max on her rod in place of her push button. So she’s getting her push button back and her daddy is getting the pro max.  Everybody is happy now.

Any Abu Max reel BESIDES the Silver Max

Can you elaborate on the Silver Max?  I just bought 3 for $29/each.  I thought i might just put them on rods I don't really use much.   I have too many reels anyway and plenty of $300 reels.  I am not expecting anything special at all, just something functional if I might use that rod a couple times per season for short periods.  Thanks
