For the last four years when I was working full time, I packed a sandwich and a piece of fruit for lunch. Usually PBJ with an apple or banana. The last year I cut it back to 1/2 of a sandwich.                     When all the other guys took off for the closest drive through, I'd sit in my truck and eat my lunch.                                          Working full time, I ate fast food many times when I was younger. Usually a meal. A large burger, fries, and a coke. I later switched to unsweetened ice tea. I knew lots of guys who ate huge double burgers, large fries, and a soda that took two hands to carry.                                                   It took me years to realize how much this food actually slows you down. The guys who ate this type of lunch were slowing down by three or so, because any nutritional value in this food is gone pretty quick, if your doing physical work. I avoid all of it now.                                            For those that are doing any physical work, you might try the sandwich and fruit lunch. I'll bet you'll feel a little lighter, move quicker, and have more energy overall.                                         Simply put, fast food has too much fat, preservatives, and basically is no good. It, along with too much soda, can pack on the extra pounds quickly too.                 I'm no expert on nutrition I only know from my own experience here.                                     I well remember one guy on our crew. Everyone called him Fish, because he loved McDonalds fish sandwiches. He usually always got two for lunch, with the usual giant fries and soda. One day I ask him, " you know what those fish sandwiches are made of"? He said " of course, fish, Duh!!".                 Yep, they're made of fish,. Only the finest river gar available, along with who knows what.                                                       I'm glad I quit eating this stuff years ago. Who knows? It may add a few more years to my life.                                                    Has anyone else stopped eating fast food?

No.  This temple wasn't built on salads.  BTW, that PB&J and fruit is loaded with carbs, and not as healthy as you think it is, but if you're doing hard manual labor is a decent choice to keep your energy up.

LOL its probably not river gar.  Its frozen, batter covered cod from a long ways away.  That's what McDonald's claims it is anyways.

I posted about this in another thread that focused on weight loss.  American society is built on convenience.  Fast food feeds right into that narrative.  Even a small rural town often has a McDonalds or a Subway, or both.

I don't go out of my way to get fast food.  I don't find it to be that good to be honest.  Certainly there are times when I get it though.  If McDonalds or Subway is my only option at lunch, I'd rather go hungry and just wait until dinner time.  Make better choices is what I say.

J Franchos, I think with some fast food, it's the grease and fat that slows you down.

Lots of talk about health and proper nutrition lately. Even if we are misguided or ignorant to the facts, it's great to get a conversation going. I lost 40 lbs two years ago but have since gained half of it back. Way harder this time than the first time. The biggest difference for me was cutting out fast food and soda, as well as late night snacking. Now, since my diet has improved but still isn't optimal, I need to focus on being more active.

I retired from the service in 2007.

Admittedly, I may not have handled the relocation & the change of life style as well as I could have.

My wife's health was super unstable and uncertain.

My dietary choices were not what they are now.

I ate and drank  - whatever.

I woke up one morning (summer of 2009) with my 'belly' lying on the bed beside me.

Snapped out of my funk right then.

Been on the straight & narrow pretty much ever since.

So no 'fast food' any more.

Unless we're calling an occasional pizza 'fast food', then I've had a few of those.

Undoing what I have going now is just not an option.

It was way too much work to get here and seems quite a bit easier to just keep this rolling.

At this point, I'm not sure I could even eat 1/2 of what I used to "Order" at those burger joints.

And I'm too embarrassed to even mention that gluttony.

Fat slows the uptake of carbs.  Some fats are very good for you.

Most major brand peanut butters are not really healthy. They are full of hydrogenated vegetable oil. White bread not great either. Most "jellies" are not that.  The effects you were feeling from your somewhat healthier lunches is the positive effect of reduced total calories. A step in the right direction anyway. I eat a lot of healthy stuff, but I eat a lot of unhealthy stuff too, so I'm not preaching.

Can we cover high fructose corn syrup, and why it's bad but not evil?...

Its the laws of physics here.  Its a lot easier to just keep going 65 mph down the freeway than it is to slow down, stop, and then accelerate again.

Perhaps the easiest route to this is to not allow it to get out of hand to begin with.  Its certainly easier said than done, but its the truth.  And the more it gets out hand, the harder it is to fix it.

Some of my neighbors ask me how I keep my lawn in good shape all or most of the time.  I tell them that a healthy lawn to begin with goes a long ways in reducing weed growth.  A healthy lawn will consume all of the nutrients, sunlight, and water which leaves nothing for the weeds.

You don't have to quit smoking if you never start.

Any advice on growing hair? I could really use it these days.

All of you that don't eat fast food obviously don't have a Chic-Fl-A nearby.  :)

I'm always waiting in the drive thru way to long to consider it fast food :) , but yeah, it's good. We have 3 within 1 to 2 miles of each other down here. They are opening a Cane's, had it in Gulfport, it's ok, I don't see the attraction.

We got Culvers, Subway, Dairy Queen and the Minnetonka Drive Thru here.

The Drive Thru is an old A&W that the manager bought when A&W was closing down it's drive-thru franchise...he still runs it like the old days - cute high-school girls bringing your food out to the slots where the speakers are. One day a week is 'classic car day'...everything from old Model-A's to souped up 70s Vettes and Camaros fill the lot.

The McDonald's in Mound closed down about 20 years ago - it's now a second-hand thrift shop, the Burger King about a year before that - it's a dental office now.

Closest McDonald's is now either Excelsior or Wayzata - no idea where there's a Burger King anymore.

We have a few in the area - I avoid them like the plague....reasons.

As I've gotten older, fast food of any kind makes me feel bad.  Sluggish, bloated and just plain bad.  I still eat it occasionally because I enjoy it as much as the next guy but it's increasingly not worth it.

Around here we have Krystals.  It's the southern version of White Castle.  The only real difference is Krystal has more grease and lower standards for cleanliness.  You can eat a bag of Krystal hamburgers and feel terrible for 3 days.   I'm kind of craving some now.

I've cut out the following, and feel much better:

  • No fast food, save the occasional salad if I'm really in a pinch
  • No soda / pop or caffeine (stopped in high school, 30+ years ago).
  • Have been gluten free for 4+ years (never realized it caused issues until quit...my wife had to because of health reasons...I did along with her...results have been pretty amazing)
  • Recently stopped eating vegetable oils (google the bad oils...). They are in pretty much all processed foods, chips, dressings, etc. Again, I feel much better.

What I do eat?

  • Drink lots and lots of water
  • Three eggs every morning, along with some riced vegetables. Or a protein shake.
  • Protein / vegetables / fruits for lunch
  • nuts and natural peanut butter for snacks, along with veggies.
  • Protein / vegetables / fruits for dinner
  • Additional: Some dairy (love me some cheese), and will indulge in ice cream here and there. Can really tell when I do...

Wife is an amazing cook, and cooks up great meals that are gluten free, pretty darn healthy. We will eat the occasional gluten free frozen pizza...aside from that...pretty boring diet.

Can't stress this enough...I feel MUCH better eating this way! Every person is different...finally feel like I have cracked the code with my nutrition. I've lost body fat since cutting out vegetable oils...need to get back to consistent work-outs.

I used to eat fast food while working, but I never got the cokes and fries, usually chicken sandwiches by themselves. Now I just eat a couple hard boiled eggs here and there, just try to wait until I get home.  We had to stay at a job last summer all day, the customer brought us big macs. I ate one and couldn’t hardly move for the next day and half. I’m not sure what’s in those but it’s not good, probably rotten horse meat.

also fast food is really not cheap anymore, most of them are on par with sit down restaurants

there are some places that sell somewhat healthy food like grilled chicken breast, but it’s still way cheaper to grill your own chicken breast.

Every once in awhile, my brain will say..."Hey..you know what we haven't had for awhile?  Stomach cramps and explosive diarrhea!"  So it sends me to Long John Silvers.  Tastes so good.  Makes me feel SOOOOOO bad.

Moderation is key. If you’re going to eat unhealthy meals don’t biggie size it and drink tea instead of coke.

I don't care what people say, I LOVE LJS. However, the closest one to me is about 50 min away. I would love to go eat there, but I don't think I could make it back to the house in time.

I think I heard someone say that LJS was handing these out at the drive-thru . . .

I've been on a diet for going on 2 months...as of last week I'd lost 17.5lbs in 7 weeks averaging 2.5lbs a week. Some weeks I allow myself a cheat day and some weeks I dont. One cheat day we had sushi for lunch and a local Italian place for dinner...it was fantastic. One week I had delivery pizza..it was very good. One week I had taco bell for lunch and McDonald's for supper..both sucked and made me feel like a pile of crap.

Everything in moderation.  I love some fast food and am a sucker for burgers and even Taco Bell.  Some days I want that calorie dense food for whatever reason.

When I worked construction a triple large fries frosty and soda from Wendy's was the norm.  That was pretty much my pre game meal for all my years of playing basketball through college too.

never slowed me down and I even tried more healthy stuff too but the caloric intake was never enough for what I liked to do.

Everyone's body is different.  I rarely eat lunch now except maybe a protein bar and eat a big dinner to go with my smoothie in the morning.  Seems to work for me.
