cyclops2 Posted February 17, 2022 Posted February 17, 2022 Are all you people aware of the right way to ALWAYS reel in BRAID ? It Needs to be done every time you reel in the line. When you start to reel in a line any time. With or without a fish on. USE 2 fingers to pinch the line as it is reeled onto the reel spool. SQUEEZE the line hard enough to eliminate any loose windings. I used to do that when I had a fish on also. When the fish turns & runs at you. The line is slack for a while and lots of loose turns are on top of each other. Fish turns side ways or away. BOING !! Instant line dig in to the loose line on the reel spool. Been there and did that problem for a while. Correctly REWINDING braid WILL give fantastic casts on any bait casting reel. I guarantee it. Or money back. Enjoy your B C reel again. I did forget to tell you.........You are to PINCH ALL THE line as you start filling the reel up with backing / filler line. ALL line being wound on IS ALWAYS TO BE ....TIGHT. 1 Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted February 17, 2022 Super User Posted February 17, 2022 What kind of baits are you using to make it necessary for that type of retrieve? I’m wondering because I only use braid for Arigs and spinnerbaits with bait casters and they provide enough drag to keep tension on the line. Quote

cyclops2 Posted February 17, 2022 Author Posted February 17, 2022 If you do not cast into the wind with light lures. No WOW None at all. Quote

Amazing, I don't do anything you say has to be done. I'm not sure why you are having so much trouble, but part of it may be that you are using cheap braid that is flat and not round, and that you have your drag set way too high. I am having no trouble with braid on a spin , and while I prefer mono on baitcasters, I still can use braid on them without problems that you mention 3 Quote

Braid on 2 spinners and 3 casters - definitely get a decent braid...832 is all I'm using right now. 2 Quote
Dan N Posted February 17, 2022 Posted February 17, 2022 That makes no sense to me. I have not had that issue with braid. and no way i’m pinching my line at all times. That seems odd Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted February 17, 2022 Super User Posted February 17, 2022 I'll echo the I haven't had that issue sentiment prevalent on this thread. If you spool braid correctly from the start, the only time I have had it dig in is when I am straight pulling back to try and break off and even then, it is minimal at best. On spinning gear I almost exclusively run braid and never had an issue digging in and even if I did, I'll take the handling characteristics on spinning over any other issues I may run into. 2 Quote
Aaron_H Posted February 17, 2022 Posted February 17, 2022 I have braid on all of my casting setups (30-50lb PowerPro) and do not experience this issue to any significant degree, even casting into heavy winds. The only time I noticeably had this issue was when I first started out and spooled my reel with smaller diameter braid. Upped the diameter and voila. I am glad you have a technique that eliminates the issue for you, but I don't believe your experience to be very universal. 1 1 Quote
cyclops2 Posted February 17, 2022 Author Posted February 17, 2022 Bingo Aaron. Tiny diameters are difficult. Years ago I could get 4# test Cajun Braided. It was just like you said. On my SPIN reel into the wind with my 1.5 " long Rapala floater lure. I went with 6# braid as a replacement and almost no problems casting into moderate wind. I had some deep cuts with the 4# test braid. Wraping the braid around a hand was iffy on being cut while pulling to break the line. I have learned to carry 1 right hand glove in the tackle box Quote
Super User T-Billy Posted February 18, 2022 Super User Posted February 18, 2022 I like braid dig in. The #1 cause is sticking a biggun in heavy cover and winching it out. HMMPH!!! GIT OVER HERE!!! 2 Quote
Super User dodgeguy Posted February 18, 2022 Super User Posted February 18, 2022 What's with this hand cutting ? Get a 1 inch diameter wood dowel 12 inches long wrap it around that and pull 1 Quote
cyclops2 Posted February 18, 2022 Author Posted February 18, 2022 dodge guy I am mentally handicapped with age. But I do use the handle of the screwdriver in the tool box with the 60 or 80# test. That is some TOUGH line. I have a very smooth S S cleat just for pulling the whole Reed plant out of the bottom. ? 1 Quote
cyclops2 Posted February 18, 2022 Author Posted February 18, 2022 Perfect !! My old Mitchells do a similar wrapping. B C should have a Level Winder slot to help new people ? Quote

Super User dodgeguy Posted February 18, 2022 Super User Posted February 18, 2022 I use nothing under 50 on a baitcaster. Quote

Fishingmickey Posted February 18, 2022 Posted February 18, 2022 I run deep diving crank baits on 30# braid. The only time I have "dig-in" issues with my bait casters is when I get snagged and have to lock down the drag and pull like hell to either bend out the hooks (most of the time) or break off. I fix the "dig-in" by tying on another lure or using the one I pulled free. I get the boat (kayak in my case) moving and pay out line till I get all of the "dig-in's" dug out. then reel in with the tension from the crank bait itself gets my line right again. I've tried going down to 20# but it just too fine diameter wise. When I am trying a bomb cast with 20# braid and I'm not successful. The birds nest and and shock of a 3/4 - 1.5+ oz crankbait coming to a dead stop in mid-flight will snap the line. Then the crank bait will go into the next county or maybe orbit. I run 20# braid on my spinning reels and I have no dig-in issues with spinning. Going with smaller diameter braid is like trying to tie gossamer frogs hair. I've started playing with a couple of BFS set-up's. I'm using 10# braid with them. Hopefully that dastardly "dig-in" monster won't rear it's ugly head. Fishingmickey (not one of the all you people who knows the correct way to reel in braid) 1 Quote
Super User Bird Posted February 18, 2022 Super User Posted February 18, 2022 I must be doing somping wrong/right. Idk 4 baitcasters running 20# Power pro and never experienced digging. I do however use my net handle for break offs. 2 1 Quote
