bigspirit Posted February 15, 2022 Posted February 15, 2022 I’ve got a buddy that goes down every year to fish for bream. I got invited to go along but don’t plan on driving 7 hours to fish for a bream! How’s the bass fishing around then? Not as concerned with what to throw but wondering if it’s a decent time to fish or if it’s getting to be late and hot for the season. If it matters, just south of Palatka. Quote
mfnew Posted February 16, 2022 Posted February 16, 2022 Be prepared for it to be hot and humid. 1 1 Quote
GRiver Posted February 16, 2022 Posted February 16, 2022 Don’t know how far south your going, but I love south of Palatka, near Welaka. I fish in June, early morning and evenings, by midday, the bite just seems to turns off. I head up up some of the rivers, Ocklawaha or Bear creek. Water is cooler. Oh yea I forgot … It’s hot and muggy here during that time. Evening storms too, but I’ve found the fish seem to bite more before the storms. The lighting can get a little unnerving but the bass are biting. if you want, PM me closer to coming down, and I’ll let ya know what I know. 1 Quote

Figured as much, if it’s not December or January I think that’s always a safe bet! 51 minutes ago, GRiver said: Don’t know how far south your going, but I love south of Palatka, near Welaka. I will absolutely do that if I make it down! 1 Quote
Super User N Florida Mike Posted February 27, 2022 Super User Posted February 27, 2022 I can understand why they would want to bream fish there. They are easy to catch and they are BIG in that area. Bass? Follow Grivers advice for locations, and rodman is in the area too. Try some live wild shiners!? 1 Quote

KHNC Posted April 19, 2022 Posted April 19, 2022 The one time i went in June , I rented a house on the south end of Lake George. I bass fished by butt off for 7 days and caught one bass in the lake and the canals. Ended up spending every afternoon bowfishing the springs for Talapia. Shot quite a few 4-5lbers! Amazing how big they get down there. All the good bass fishing ive done on the st johns was in Feb/March. Quote
Super User N Florida Mike Posted April 22, 2022 Super User Posted April 22, 2022 We always did best in the spring runs off lake George when I fished down there more. Like anywhere else in Florida in summer, be on the water at daybreak and fish until it gets really hot. Usually 10-11. I love bream fishing down there. If you’ve never tried it , don’t knock it. And these bream are generally big-3/4 to 1 pounders are common. They will bite all day sometimes if you find them. Beds will often be under docks and if you can find a shell bar- it’s on. Many people “find them” by looking at all the anchored boats . I like using wigglers on the bottom. Sorry for getting distracted- I know this is a bass thread… 2 Quote
