124/74 today at the doc. Before I got on meds, I was 140-145/80-85 for 10 years. I honestly have no idea what the numbers mean but I know high BP is not a good thing.

I don't like taking meds if I don't have to be they over the counter or scripts. The BP meds and vitamins are the only thing I take religiously. Can't even recall the last time I took Tylenol or Ibuprofen.

Day 4 of low salt, low saturated diet.

I get a lot of info from AHA and they basically say that if you follow a low salt, low saturated fat diet your can lower you BP in 2 weeks.

Yesterday:

1,500 cals,  184 g carbs, 15 g fat, 115 g protein (55%, 10%, 35% respectively) & 1,465 mg soduim

BP this morning: 130/80!! My systolic high was 145 at the docs office and the same when I started to monitor. My workouts have been more intense as well. Resting heart rate dropped a bit as well. I know there is no correlation between resting heart rate and BP, but I do notice a difference in stamina during my workouts.

Not out of the woods yet, but I like where this is going.

Do you check your BP at other times of the day or just in the morning? It's going to be lowest when you wake up.

Ha! Don't have to worry about that because I have a heart rate of 35-40ish, lower when sleeping, so the doctors encourage me to eat things like pretzels and peanut butter, but I promise you it's better to have high blood pressure and take a medicine and low heart rate and get a pacemaker installed (fingers crossed we won't have to do that)

You may need a new doctor, if your BP is naturally that low (mine got to that when I was younger and in racing shape) it's genetic, and diet will not have a significant effect on it. And though not as common, you can have a low heart rate and elevated BP. I have high cholesterol levels, but the ratio of the LDL to HDL are good. All these things get "worse" as you age.

Be careful, I don't see a lot of causality in what you are describing.

I was advised to take it the same time every day. The docs office always tells me to come to my physical in a fasted state, so I figured I do it in the morning. Your BP will naturally be higher during the day, so I guess taking your BP it's like taking your weight, first thing in the morning.

ah I see, yeah the high salt content does not have any effect on my heart rate, its just to prevent fainting as often.

130/78. Not much change, but all in all not a bad week.

Doc wants me to lose a few pounds as well. Down 3 this week. I'm guessing a good portion of that is fluid.

Seriously? That's crazy! With a heart rate that low, I've heard that some people with that condition have irregular heart beats or they may skip a beat, are you in that camp? I hope not. That's a whole different concern for sure. :)

no, just naturally low they say and they dont know why, but as long as it stays stable and doesnt go any lower and can keep elevating during exercise they seem to be alright with it. they monitor it every 6 months to see if anything changes.

So I owe you an apology. I really didn't think you were serious. When you opened your post with  "Ha!..." I actually thought you were joking around. :)

Good luck to you, man!

I don't know how many ounces of water you are drinking but if you would try 128 a day for a week. I really think it would make a difference.

I’m glad glad you’re posting this reminder. Completely agree. I’ve been logging pretty much everything and have noticed that I’m falling about 20 oz short.

I’m home for the next 3 days, it’ll give me a chance to add that 20 oz in while the bathroom is in close proximity. :)

Really appreciate your post and help. It’s very helpful to me.

Thanks.

Had a nice surprise this morning...actually couldn't believe my eyes.

BP: 120/78!!

I did it twice with a few minutes rest between just to make sure. Second reading was a tick lower. Hopefully I didn't jinx myself by posting this, but I'm really happy where this is going.

Now to maintain it for while and hope it's not a fluke.

I'm hit or miss but elevated enough at the doctors where they put me on medication for it.

It took a while but today I was able to record a normal blood pressure. 118/68

I don't ever recall my BP under 120, At least in my adult life.

Now, the work begins.

I take Atorvastatin for chloresterol and Losartan for the BP,Ive also had a stroke due to a head injury. The biggest thing I changed was salt, I don't add salt to anything I eat. Its crazy after cutting it out that foods I thought needed salt now I think are too salty.  My Dr initially put me on Lisinopril but it swelled my legs and ankles. I guess it caused me to retain water, it didn't hurt but it freaked me out.

I got my test results back a few weeks ago (not sure why it took so long) and everything was normal or better, except LDL chloresterol was on the high side. HDL was on the higher side as well, which is good, it combats the LDL, bad chloresterol. Doc seemed fine with that, but deep down, I wonder if it was contributing to my BP? Who knows.

I've cut salt intake to below 1,500 mg. I've been monitoring my BP daily since Feb 15th and notice that when I get high systolic numbers it's when I'm exceeding the 1,500 mg threshold. May or may not tell the whole story, but it's certainly something to take into consideration.

My fingers are crossed for you, Jmilburn76, for a healthy future. ?

I'm on Losartan as well. Did the Lisinopril for almost a year. While it worked, I had a constant tickle in my throat and a dry cough. I think it cleared up about 2 weeks after I got off of it.

When I was about 50, my blood pressure started rising at a fast rate.  I was very healthy, walking about six hours a day in my job as a USPS mail carrier (all walking routes at my post office with no vehicle back then) plus lots of bicycling.  On weekends I was doing a lot of hiking and backpacking.  I was probably in the best shape of my life!

The doc was surprised about my BP problem and sent me to a cardiologist.  He checked me out thoroughly, found nothing out of the ordinary but said he had a hunch... and then he sent me for a sleep study.  Turns out I had acute sleep apnea.  The doc also noted that my mom had hypertension and it can be congenital.  A CPAP machine and Enalapril brought my blood pressure numbers back into line.

I also take Simvastatin for cholesterol.  The doc switched me to Lipitor (Atorvastatin) a couple of months ago but I had a couple of terrible vertigo attacks (thank God I wasn't driving at the time!) and was experiencing some really annoying memory issues so I'm off that and back to Simvastatin again.  Several people I've talked to have had issues with Atorvastatin.  I did a lot of reading about it and I believe it's a bad drug.
