I've got a 16ft Xpress with a 40lb Power Drive on the bow. It works great but I fish a lake that has a motor restriction on it and was thinking about getting a transom mount for making long trips from spot to spot.

Each motor would be on their own battery, my question is how big should I go? Ideally I'd want a 55lb on the back but that's a little more than my pocket can take right now.

I'm basically looking in the 30-45lb range. Anyone have any ideas of what's the smallest that could get the job done?

Thanks,

Dave

A Minn Kota 50 lb. thrust Endura is $50 more than a 40 lb.

Money well spent, even if you have to save for another month.

I've owned a bunch of electric motors, and admit to a strong bias in favor of Minn Kota.

Dave, if you go to this website you'll find a menu-driven motor selector.

Thanks for all the replies.  I think I will get the 55. I've got a month before I need to get it so I should be able to scratch together and extra $50.  ;D

A 55 pound running on 12 volts will suck down that battery if you're using it to scoot around the lake. Even worse if it gets windy. I would look on craigslist or ebay for some cheap used 55+ transom mount motors. I see them all the time listed for dirt cheap. With the money you save, buy another battery. Then you can run all day on high speed with no worries. You're always gonna wish you had more power. A 70 pound thrust will really push that boat around. Dont rush into anything, save the cash you need to get a bigger better motor and another battery.

Agree with above.  I have the 55 and need another battery...especially when its wind....i find myself using the scoot and poot setting more to get me into the areas more effectivley...but my fishing time becomes very limited...about  2 hours if i am lucky.
