I am wanting to get into throwing 1-2oz hard swim/glide baits. This is a new thing for me and im not sure what i need to get started. My budget is under 150, preferable closer to 100$. Is a moderate action preferable for these. Im also wanting to pick up a dedicated fliping stick so it would be cool if i got something that did double duty because as i said im on a budget. Could i get away with a 7-7’4” heavy fast rod or am i going to be sacrificing too much performance with the swims to really enjoy it and stick with it? Im spitballing here because im not 100% what im wanting, but id like something that could do both flipping and swimbaiting i guess.

Look no further than the Dobyns Fury 795SB - $140

They say it's a Fast action, but Dobyns is notorious for being softer - so call it a Mod-Fast.

Yes, it could be used for flipping/pitching as well.

Not picking on you at all, sincerely, but no. Nobody would enjoy pitching with a rod that has a 2ft long handle. PS, we know he means pitching,

I didn't say it was 'good' for pitching...just that it could be done if you needed to.

Only if he's Andre the Giant.

I was thinking about ergonomics when i asked. Know i dont want to spend time wielding a broom flipping. Thats the info im looking for. So as fars as swimbait rod action goes, is heavy/fast the trick with something alittle softer than rated?

You can get away with the right typical HF rated to 1 1/2 oz if you stay close to 1 1/2 oz max although, if the rod can deal with extra weight, you can get away with lob casting 2 oz. However, if you're mostly throwing trebles you should really stick to 20 lb mono. Enough stretch to keep them pinned and will also set decent sized jig hook soft baits.

I have nearly every Dobyns Champion XP swim bait rod you can think of plus several more, but there are certain lakes I can't use them while wading. They're just too long and low hanging branches are a problem on the back cast. Where this is an issue I throw baits using a $100 Tatula XT 7'3" HF with a reel spooled with 20 lb Big Game mono. I usually stick to baits around 1 1/2oz, but have gone as high as 2 oz. No problems whatsoever. I can easily turn around and pitch jigs into pads. When I go out on my SIL's 8ft Sun Dolphin I'm limited to just a few rods. The XT is the rod I bring to pull multi duty as my small hard/soft swimbait/pitching rod. 5" Bullshad, G2 Shellcracker, S-Waver 168, Gantarel jr,  Magdraft Freestyle 6/0 Beast Hook, Trash Fish, Jigs, T-Rigs with HD FLipping hooks, etc.  It all works on this setup. Even heavy T-rigged big worms and plastics. Even Chatterbaits. I'm able to convert most bites on this setup.

Thank you @PhishLI. This is what i need to know. Alot of my fishing will be wading/bank casting for river northern and smallies. Otherwise fishing out if my 4ft shallow V. I probably wont go too much over 1.5oz. Also a good point about the mono. Ive been favoring braid to mono or fluero leader but with a faster action rod, def see the benefits of straight mono.

Another question. Im getting into A-rigs as well, would a heavy action flipping stick be able to cover flipping, a-rigs,and glidebaits?

Yes, not ideal but certainly function.

I find that as long as I can lob cast the Arig, a stout rod isn't necessary.  I throw 3 hooks/2 dummies, usually 1/8 heads, sometimes 1 3/8 middle head and bladeless more often than not.  When in a pinch a 7'6 MH rated to 1oz has worked for me.

Came up with a temporary solution. I have a 7ft uglystick catfish rod rated 1-3oz it actually did decent throwing a 1.5oz glide-bait so if i want to dabble ill use that for now. Thank you for all the help!
