I have several hundred more in my bank account than I would have had because you need more than just the rod.  Fly lines aren't cheap.  Another reel would have needed to be purchased.  Now that I think about it, I should write Sage a thank you letter.  :D

The fly fishing industry overpriced everything, diawa has some really nice fly rods that are not overpriced, and it blows my mind how people spend 400+ on a fly reel. It's not rocket science to build a fly reel yknow? It just holds line and has drag. At that point it becomes jewelry imo. Anyways enough of my rambling.

This is not exactly shocking. I got 2 blocks of cream cheese, a bag of Fritos and a loaf of bread for $15.01 this evening. This is where we are in America.

Can’t believe the prices I’m seeing. Was in my local BassPro one day then came back the next day and found price bumps on just about every reel.

I already have the perfect “out”…….”But dear, I had to……prices were going to go up 20% tomorrow…..you should thank me for saving us some money”…….(as the FedEx driver walks away from my front porch completing delivery of another NRX+)

I made a pit stop at Cabela's recently just to browse around.  My wife was next door at one of the stores she likes to frequent, needed to kill a little time.  I went walking into the Rapala section, the smaller floaters and Countdowns were $11.99 each.  Last year they were $7.99.  Still expensive either way as the online shops were always cheaper, but holy cow what a jump.  Like many here, I have a fair amount of tackle, but if I had to start off fresh again, that would be very painful.

The most difficult thing out of all of this.  I highly doubt those prices will ever come back down once this inflation is addressed, even if it were solved in the near term.  If the manufacturers continue to see respectable sales numbers they'll just keep the new pricing model.  Kind of like 15-ish years ago when almost every online shop offered free UPS/FedEx shipping on just about everything.  Once fuel prices ran away, they started charging for shipping to minimize losses.  Those shipping charges never went away once fuel became cheaper, and here we are.

Welcome to the new normal.

Even when inflation recedes, most prices today are here to stay. Some may dip a bit, but most will not.

This is exactly the problem.

Everyone who is already stocked up is in a good position. As someone who is relatively new to fishing, I don’t have a ton of tackle and with prices the way they are, I don’t know how I would ever get into something like crankbaits or jerkbaits or other hard baits. They just go up in price and fishing from the bank makes it too easy to lose baits.

I'm glad I replaced my older equipment two years ago.  Time to clean up and put hooks on those lures I found.

Garage sales and family run estate sales will be your friend.  Those baits may have dull or rusty hooks, but split rings and replacement hooks are cheap.  I had to start from near scratch 20 years ago.  A former friend of mine had his boat repossessed, and all of my stuff happened to be on it.  He and I fished often, so I didn't think anything of just keeping my gear on his boat.  I had 6 rod/reel combos on his boat as well as a couple of tackle boxes full of a wide variety of baits and terminal tackle.  All I had left was my steelhead combo and tackle pack which never found their way to the boat because that was for stream fishing.  I had no idea until a few months after the fact.

I still believe fishing is one of the least expensive hobbies.  A lot of us make it expensive, but it doesn't need to be.

It's not going to happen but if everyone would smart shop and refuse to pay these inflated prices, they'd come back down quick.  I was looking to add one more Johnny Morris platinum reel to my arsenal and boom they go from 199 to 229. Yeah, never! Principal alone is enough to not pay these inflated prices. If we smart shop, wait for sales, search auction sites etc then we don't have to pay these ridiculous prices. Honestly the more everything goes up the more I wanna quit tournament fishing altogether. 100k bass boats plus 20k more in accessories? Absolutely absurd....but I get it. The market drives the prices.

I just checked Tackle Warehouse. What's all gone up? Super high end stuff? I use $150-$250 rods and $100-$200 reels. I'm not seeing an increase in my usual stuff. As far as Pure Fishing (Pflueger and Abu specifically, which I don't use anymore and haven't in awhile), I noticed a $5-$10 bump at least a year or two ago.

Just left my shop that I buy most of my stuff from!  Didn't notice any price difference yet, but they have always been cheaper on most things compared to TW, Bass Pro and Cabela's.  I try not to give the big guys much of my money anyways.

I just realized Lew's up'd the price on the Custom Pro SLP $20! Oh, what to do, what to do? I suppose I'll be patching up my bestest dress sneakers with duct tape and Krazy Glooo, again. I NEED that reel?

I agree. Yeah fishing stuff has gone up but what hasnt? Just saw cauliflower on sale for 3.49 a head..next week its 7+. That's a 100% increase in a week..I've never seen senkos go from $8 to $16 a pack in a week. Also I was talking to a buddy at work who does alot of shooting and coyote hunting. He said yeah I just bought a new rifle, scope and ammo for yote hunting...I got a good deal he said only around $3000. Can buy a top end rigged fishing kayak for that type of money. Or a dozen nice rod and reel combos.

I'm saving this post to show to my wife. "See?! I knew all that tackle was a great 'investment'"

I laughed to myself earlier this year wondering why I'd invest in I-series bonds at ~7.5% interest when I can get 10% on my Tackle Warehouse gift cards.

I agree, there isn't a boat out there worth $100+k with or without add ons. I'm not spending $100k on anything that doesn't come with a zip code. Heck, I'm not spending $50k on anything without a zip code.

No boss I meant boats themselves lol. Was with a buddy Friday looking at an older skeeter for him. They had a used vexus glass boat sitting beside it. Dude said yeah that one is used and we have it at 90k. Said that boat before any graphs or accessories new would be real close to 100k. I've seen several new ranger and bass cat boats listed for 90-100k, add tax title and license plus some 12 inch graphs and poles etc and ur well over 100k. I'm in the same boat, if It doesn't come with acreage I'm not spending 100k on anything.  Pay 2 or 3 times as much for a boat as I did my truck? Not this guy.

Wages

I got more into fishing in 2020 when the price of ammo tripled and was impossible to find. Its not as bad anymore, but prices still are nowhere near what they used to be. Fishing stuff still is no where near as expensive, but it still sucks to see prices go up because they never go back down

Guess it depends on the industry. With the pandemic and now labor shortage in my neck of the woods the company I work for is throwing money at people trying to keep them. My wage has gone up $4.50 an hour in the past year plus we just had our biggest profit sharing check in plant history and next week they are giving us value share. My buddy who works in a completely unrelated industry just got a big bonus and said his 1 on 1 review / wage negotiations went very well.

Not speaking for your situation but for most a wage increase is eaten up by inflation or increase in medical insurance so in essence it’s a wash.

Years ago we would get a COLA (cost of living adjustment) and an annual raise. Lately all we get is the COLA.

And those of us on fixed income - Social Security - aren't even keeping up.

Inflation last year was 7%

My COLA was 5.9%

This, right here. In my field, we get between 2 and 4% each year, but with inflation over 5, it's a net loss.

I'm thankful for points towards purchases and discount codes. I got a Diawa Tatula CT for $25 off! I need one more 735C and I'm done buying for good.
