brgbassmaster Posted February 10, 2022 Posted February 10, 2022 I have two HDS 10s on my boat. When I'm side scanning in 20' and less I can see every single rock, weeds etc. Anything over 20 ft and the screen turns super dark and I cannot see anything. Its so annoying when I fish offshore and as soon as I hit any kind of real depth having that issue. Ive tried messing with settings but got nowhere. Anyone have an idea what to do? Thanks! Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted February 10, 2022 Global Moderator Posted February 10, 2022 Hmmmm. Did you widen the distance it goes out to each side? Ive only been side scanning since Sept Quote

When it gets deeper, try expanding it out to 100 or so . Again I’m totally new to this but I think I’ve experienced something similar Quote

Trox Posted February 10, 2022 Posted February 10, 2022 Me spying on a Lowrance topic that I have no business being a part of 3 Quote
Super User Bankc Posted February 10, 2022 Super User Posted February 10, 2022 You can try auto ranging for the side scan as well. If that, or expanding the distance doesn't fix it, there might be a problem with the unit. I'd contact Lowrance if that doesn't fix it. 1 Quote

Super User gim Posted February 10, 2022 Super User Posted February 10, 2022 Lowrance units can be tricky with side scan. The optimum speed is 5 mph so unless you adjust the refresh rate if you're going slower, you may not be getting an accurate frame. 1 Quote

Assuming that the water depth is 50' and you're set at 50 or 60 feet, it basically means that you're only downscanning and not looking to the sides at all. If you want to see 60 feet to the side, you need the depth of the water PLUS your intended target to the side, so 110 feet in the above example. Quote

Why at 21' does my screen go so dark that I cant seen anything. but at 20' and less its clear as day? Quote
Super User Team9nine Posted February 23, 2022 Super User Posted February 23, 2022 Pics would really be nice when the ice allows. Where are the two units located? Bow and console? Are they both doing the exact same thing? Did you try swapping the units to see if the problem repeats or does it just stay with one unit? Are they running off separate transducers or the same one? Separate black boxes for each, or the same one? Are the units linked together (Ethernet)? These are same basic questions to check and answer to try and pinpoint the problem. Quote

I don't get the kind of detail that I see photos of, but I haven't had any issues where I wasn't seeing what I thought I was supposed to see (what was under and to the side of the boat). Quote
