My Father's cousin has a condo in Fort Myers that he stays at from Jan - March.  He's really been on the warpath lately about the cold weather there lol.  His 9 month residence is in a suburb of the Twin Cities about 10 miles north of me.

I understand why your father's cousin is upset about the colder than normal weather, especially since he moved down here for the warm weather we have most of the year. South Florida's climate is not 100% tropical, it is sub tropical so we do have a couple days in the year the temperature drops below 60 degrees and rarely does it drop in the low 40's or below. Today the daytime temperatures was in the 80's so it is getting warmer and warmer as our Winter is ending. The occasional cold weather, hurricanes, hot Summers, and increasing population is the price we pay to live in a state that is known as the ''Fishing Capital of the World''.

LOL, it is easy when you live in ''The Fishing Capital of the World''. Like I said earlier the occasional cold weather, hurricanes, hot Summers, and increasing population is the price we pay to live in our state. It is nice to be able to fish for huge variety of fish in beautiful weather.

I catch more fish in the supermarket. Pre skinned & filleted.    Like those pinkies.    ?

Every place has pros and cons. Thank goodness we can visit.

im gonna try ice fishing next year. It looks so interesting.  Adventurous almost.

and I’m gonna go try and sweat balls fishing Florida.  Travel fishing is my new thing as the craziness of the past two years hopefully trickle to a nuisance. What I NEED is a Sprinter van so I can show up with a kayak. :)

I am feeling your pain down here in Ames.  I think that I am find a reason to go out to the lake place and stare at my boat and fishing gear.  For some reason, this winter has hit harder and made me think about heading back to the south in the near future.  On the bright side, I will be in the Keys in a couple of weeks for some offshore fishing.  Spring needs to hurry up and get here.  Hopefully we will get a bit of quick melting snow and spread out rain in the spring.

I always tell my kids (in their 20s), that they can make their own choices, but they should do so now with an eye to the future.  Personally, got really tired of really cold and snowy weather during 3, 4 or 5 months of the year at my home in northern Pennsylvania and I finally did something about it.  It wasn't easy and it wasn't cheap, but I made the decision to purchase a seasonal home in South Carolina where I could fish straight through the winter with an eye to the possibility of spending more time down here in the future or potentially even moving here full-time.  It's not always warm here and because I'm retired and have a lot of time, I CHOOSE not to fish if the weather's in the 30s or the low 40s, but fortunately for me, we don't get much weather like that and even in the middle of winter, it's typically in the upper 40s/lower 50s here.  You'll see the locals walking around like George Costanzo in a gigantic down coat when the weather gets like that, but to a northerner (who did plenty of ice fishing and fishing on lakes in really cold weather), that weather is perfectly comfortable.   The other good thing about my area is that the lakes (even the big ones) are relatively protected and you only very rarely have to even consider the wind as a factor when you're deciding whether to fish or not.

As I said, it wasn't easy for us and we really had to make some sacrifices, but there ARE options for those who are stuck in the frozen north for months at a time (even a short winter vacation was always welcome to me before we bought the seasonal place).

You're living my dream, definitely something for us to work on. One day, hopefully sooner rather than later.

I can't say more emphatically....do it if it's clear that it's what you want.  We only have so many days in this world and there's no sense being miserable if there's an option.  Obviously not everyone can just up and pull the plug to move or to purchase a second home because of financial realities, family obligations, etc. (we have all of these too), but if you're able to do it and you wish to do it, you won't regret the choice, at least my wife and I haven't.

The winter that is. Haven't been fishing in months...yeah I could go ice fishing but that's just not the same. On the bright side we are having a very mild winter..ever milder than last year. We had early ice out in 21..somewhere in the first week in March. If that holds true again this year I should have open water in about 25ish days. Fingers and toes all crossed.

Who says global warming is all bad?

The other day I looked at my wife and told her I’ve about had my fill of living in NY.

Agreed, I said something similar to my wife a few days ago.  I hate winter, always have.  And as much of a fishing fanatic I've been all my life, I've only been ice-fishing once.  It's a bit too stationary for me.

Having said that, my children and grandchildren live near me, so we won't be going anywhere.

I haven't caught a bass since October 15th. I went fishing that friday afternoon and caught 6 bass and later that night sadly a family member of mine passed away from illness. All my follow up trips after that have been skunk after skunk, it kinda spooked me out to be honest that before my relative passed the fishing was amazing but right after it just completely shut down.

Me too, man.  I didn't really fish much last year, I focused mostly on ultra training.  But I got the itch a couple weeks ago, and I've been getting antsy.  I've gone through all my tackle, stripped old line from all my reels, bought a bunch of gear, sold some.  It has helped a little, but not much.  It's supposed to be in the 50s this coming week, so I'm gonna try to hit the river and make a couple casts to ease the restlessness.
