MJack Posted February 8, 2022 Posted February 8, 2022 I have a 7ft Dobyns Fury crankbait rod that’s medium heavy moderate fast. I got it to use for medium crankbaits, chatterbaits, and possibly some topwater applications. Any suggestions on a baitcasting reel to put on this rod? What gear ratio and how big a spool (how many yards of line do I need)? Thanks! Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted February 8, 2022 Super User Posted February 8, 2022 My Fury 705CB (ya, that's the same rod) has a Fuego CT 6.3:1 on it. It's my main crank/medium topwater rig. I run chatters on a MH/F rig with a faster reel. Reel size isn't a big issue...I put 70-80yds of mainline (12# Yo-Zuri Hybrid in this case) on top of enough 10# Berkley Big Game backing to fill the reel. 1 Quote

The MagForce-Z braking system on the Fuego is top-notch...I rarely have backlashes, and pretty much only when I do something stupid. 1 Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted February 8, 2022 Posted February 8, 2022 Fuego is great value. T wing is just another thing for me to work around. Quote
papajoe222 Posted February 9, 2022 Posted February 9, 2022 6.3:1 is a good, general use gear ratio and the one I use the most for cranking. If you'll be using it for topwater, I'd go with a low stretch mono. Most lines advertised as such are actually copolymers and work well with cranks, too. For single hook baits like chatterbaits, you'll want to upsize your line test a bit. That may reduce the running depth of your cranks, but as long as you don't jump more than 4lb. it won't be much. HaydenS Posted February 9, 2022 Posted February 9, 2022 6.3 should be perfect for crankbaits and chatterbaits, should keep the lure right where it needs to be. I’m sure a 6.3 would be fine for any appropriate topwater applications you’re wanting to throw on this combo as well. Quote
