Nrx+ 854C vs 894C

I’m looking for a new rod to complement my NRX  853C.  Any feedback from 854 vs 894 users?

I have the 844 MBR NRX+ and the 894c NRX.  Not a direct comparison but the MBR action is different from the JWR for sure.  I am not sure if the 854 is JWR or MBR but that may be something to consider.  The 894 is a much more fast action, heavy power rod on how it fishes than my 844 MBR.  I will say though, the 844 MBR is worth a look too.

I have the 853C NRX and was in the same boat last year. I ended up getting the 904C MBR NRX+. So far this has been nothing short of perfect.  I have used it for just about everything except crankbaits.  I wanted to do the 854 but it was out of stock everywhere as was the 844C. I really like how MBR's feel in the NRX lineup.

The MBR makes these rods much more versatile by my count. If one was looking primarily for a bottom contact rod I would choose the JWR, if one wants something one can fish the bottom and moving baits, the MBR really is great. My last trip out I was throwing a DWalker 120 on an underspin hook and the 844 MBR performed great.

I cannot speak directly to the difference between the 854 and 894 but it may simply come down to preference on length and if you plan more up close presentations versus longer presentations. Shorter should be more accurate and longer give longer casts.

854 is a 3/8-1/2 jig rod. Great for skipping, big worms in cover, etc. 

894 is a more powerful 1/2-3/4 jig rod. Great for pitching heavy cover, 5-6 inch plastic swimbaits, and even light A rigs. Very different rods although lure ratings are the same. If I wanted something a little more powerful than 853 with 3/8 jigs I would go 854. Most like 894 better with 853 as the 2 rods covers most  jigs within 1/4-3/4 oz range.

If you're fishing just jigs or texas rigs then JWR.

 

If you want to throw other stuff then the MBR.

The 844 has a softer tip and deeper flex making it suitable for anything in its weight range. Some like it better for 1/2 oz football jigs due to it's loading ability vs JWR. I would say power wise the 844 and 854 are very similar.  Spec wise the 844 weights more but balances better due to the full cork grip which is also slightly longer than split grip length of JWR.  The 873 NRX is another popular option if you like something a little longer and more powerful than the 854 but not 894 power.
