I’m looking for a reel for my Champ XP 734c and I can’t decide which reel to get. I had a Curado K on it before but I moved that over to my heavy jig rod. The Champ is my best overall rod and while I love the Curado, I’ve really been wanting a newer Daiwa.
The 2 reels I’m really considering are the new Tatula SV and the new Zillion SV. The Tatula Elite has also caught my eye too. My budget is 350, but if the Tatula reels are just as good, then I can save a little money and be happy. Thanks for y’all’s help!

If you have the spare cheese then get the Zillion. If it doesn't spread your funds too thin it's worth it.

Tat SV is more forgiving in casting into the wind and with light baits, zillion's two-stage is better in all cases but those two, at least at my skill level.

I have quite a few of each of the above. I'm not running to retire the 17 or 20 tat SV's, but all the new reels I'm buying are the 21 zillions, which means my most-used rods all have zillions.

ChampXp 734c I'm running a JDM Tatula HLC. This rod I'm looking for max cast distance as I use it mosty for Chatterbaits and spinners. For me last thing I would put on it is a SV... that me anyways

Coming from a “K” if you go with tat SV, you wouldn’t feel much difference and might even disappointed with distance. If you go with 21 Zillion, you will start wondering why Daiwa is so smooth, appreciate more of lightness and more versatile. You will have no doubt why you pay more for Zillion. You might not get the same distance as K in some case but you will gain more of control in any situation or any lure weight. Perfect for overall type fishing.

It should be saltwater safe but I wouldn’t wanna use any of my Daiwa in saltwater due to well known bubble paint problem.

In addition to countless other Daiwas and Shimanos, I have the Tatula SV, the Curado K, and a Zillion but my Zillion is not the SV version. I think you will be plenty satisfied with the Tatula SV. It will handle lighter lures better than the Curado though I love my Curados too. I do not think you'll notice a super increase in performance between the Tatula SV and the Zillion SV, though I could be wrong. I was wrong once back when I was in the third grade. The Zillion SV might (possibly?) cast lighter lures slightly better but I don't think it will be a huge difference. My son says that upgrading the spool bearings to Boca ABEC 7's will improve casting distances some on any of those reels but I have not tried that. I have read that the Daiwa Alphas BFS and the newer Curado BFS are much better with lighter lures but they require lighter rods and do not cast larger jigs and things as well.

When I started getting into that $300 plus reel category I started realizing that some of the claims about performance were slightly exaggerated and sometimes greatly exaggerated. I'm not saying the Zillion or Metanium or any of those reels are bad. They are not, but they are not what many people think or claim they are. In fact, some of the earlier Chronarchs were just Curados with a different cosmetics and a couple extra bearings. I would find a friend who has one and cast it before throwing that kind of money at it. Then again, you can buy one, tell us about it, and save us some bucks. Good luck!

My Zillion is put away right now and I am not sure of the exact model # but I know it is not an SV. It looks just like yours, the more silver one in color. I bought mine for far less than full retail. I did the same thing with my Shimano Calcuttas and even my first Tatula and my first 3 Curados. I rarely pay even close to full retail... sometimes but rarely.

I am not attacking those who spend $250- $400 on a reel. I have quite a few of those reels. To each his own. Do and use what you enjoy! On the other hand, I will strongly disagree with those who say your fishing skills will jump to the next level when go from $150-$200 reels to $300-$400 reels. That's a joke. It may feel better to hold those reels and you might gain a few yards in casting distance but it will not revolutionize your fish-catching ability unless, over time, it causes you to fish a lot more and develop better skills. That is what I was trying to say.

If you want to catch more fish, you need improved skills not necessarily more expensive gear. Spending money is not the helpful shortcut most hope it will be, that is unless unless you are still using Zebco 202s, kite string and bone hooks or something. This is not just my limited experience. Many retired pros and guides who are no longer having to do brand promos will tell you the same thing.I've seen some incredible older fishermen using heavy, noisy gear that I would hate to be stuck with. I've seen guys with cowboy hats and ancient red ABU Ambassadeurs who were unbelieveable fishermen. I've also seen guys who try to dress, and talk, and copy the movements, and spend like the Pros they watch on videos and they look rediculous and fish badly. They are entertaining to watch though! :D

You'll read references to the"bait monkey" on here often. He's not just enticing you to buy unnecessary lures. He's also a rod and reel monkey. He's made a monkey out of me many times over the years. I could live another 100 years and not use all the tackle that I thought I "had to have" when I bought it. Yep! I've been a long-term sucker and I hate to see guys follow in my steps! :D

Both Steez and Zillion SV TW (1000 reels) are rated saltwater-safe by Daiwa.

I've fished mine a year and couldn't say more than you couldn't pry it from my fingers, etc.

Two things that Daiwa would lean on for this claim - good anodizing on both aluminum and magnesium, and their mag-seal bearings.

Filiform corrosion that @Bass_Fishing_Socal alluded is a Paint issue with All aluminum and magnesium (pot metal to aircraft sheet).  I fished my Lew's BB-1NG in the salt 40 years ago through most of 3 decades, and it's still here.  My guide buddy Tim had a bad habit of putting reels away without any rinse or maintenance.  His lasted a season - the powder-coated pot-metal frame absolutely came apart, beginning with filiform under the paint.

Mine has both the original frame paint and wrought-sheet anodizing with a bit of boat rash. Even this non-salt-rated reel was such a hit in the Corpus area, Roy's Bait & Tackle eventually bought the parts inventory from Zebco.

The tatula sv doesn’t cast far compared to a curado k, something to keep in mind. I was disappointed but for skipping it’s amazing !  What about the new curado mgl 150?

Well I went to Scheels and they didn’t have the zillion. Coupled with missing 3 days of work, thanks to the weather, my budget shrunk a bit and I picked up a Tatula Elite. holding it in the store it was super nice, absolutely amazing. Feels like a beefier Tat 100 and is the smoothest reel I own

Good luck finding a Zillion! For pure aesthetics, the Zillion is beautiful! The Zillion has a 100 spool. You can do so much with the SV spool. The question do you want to spend an extra 150. The Tatula SV will get the job done plenty. I feel like you are selling yourself short, but not considering the Shimano Curado 150 MGL.

If you're looking, TTT has all models in stock except for the 8 spd RH. I ordered a 7spd LH Friday afternoon and received it Monday morning. 10% off too.

It's a matter of cost really. If you decide to save some money, the 2020 Tatula SV is a fantastic reel.
