Guest ncbass24 Posted August 10, 2007 Posted August 10, 2007 Hey Guys, How many of you use trailer hooks on spinnerbaits? I have never used trailer hooks on mine, but recently the fish seem to be short striking the bait alot. If you do use them, any brands or sizes you would recommend? Quote
Taliesin Posted August 10, 2007 Posted August 10, 2007 I've never used a trailer on spinners either. Frankly, in the cover I throw those things in, I don't think another hook is a good idea. Quote
Vyron Posted August 10, 2007 Posted August 10, 2007 With a trailer hook , you ll land more fish . The drawback is that u ll lose more spinnerbaits like this. As for brand , I use gamakatsu 2/0 and 3/0 Quote
Guest avid Posted August 10, 2007 Posted August 10, 2007 I hate trailer hooks. don't use em on spinnerbaits, or buzzbaits. They tangle up in everything, foul up more, and are a general pain in the butt. I find short strikers can be caught by trimming back the skirts. Quote
Shad_Master Posted August 10, 2007 Posted August 10, 2007 The only time I don't use a trailer hook is when I don't want to catch a fish Quote
jdw174 Posted August 11, 2007 Posted August 11, 2007 The only time I don't use a trailer hook is when I don't want to catch a fish +1 here. I use them on all my spinnerbaits and I throw into bushes/blowdowns, etc. I even like to pitch them into spots just like a jig. Will they hang up? Yeah, OCCASIONALLY, but the rewards outweigh the losses IMO. I've caught far too many fish on the trailer to discount their use. Gammakatsu makes trailer hooks and that's what I use, usually 2/0. Super User Catt Posted August 11, 2007 Super User Posted August 11, 2007 Don't use them & you can't make me I do have a question for those who do use trailer hooks; how do you know the bass would not have been caught if the trailer wasn't there? Quote
Super User T-rig Posted August 11, 2007 Super User Posted August 11, 2007 Don't use them & you can't make me I do have a question for those who do use trailer hooks; how do you know the bass would not have been caught if the trailer wasn't there? I think people that use trailer hooks have lost too many bass. 90% of my bass are caught on the trailer hook. The bass around here are very spooky. Quote
Super User Catt Posted August 11, 2007 Super User Posted August 11, 2007 My question is how do you know you would have missed those fish without a trailer hook? Quote
Triton21 Posted August 11, 2007 Posted August 11, 2007 Catt, if I am getting constant short strikes I add a trailer hook. I then catch those fish that are striking short. Kelley Quote
Super User T-rig Posted August 11, 2007 Super User Posted August 11, 2007 My question is how do you know you would have missed those fish without a trailer hook? Because when I fish without one I loose most of my fish due to short strikes. Make sense? Quote
Super User Catt Posted August 11, 2007 Super User Posted August 11, 2007 If I miss fish on a Rogue with 3 treble hooks then I should add more hooks to solve the problem? Quote
Super User T-rig Posted August 11, 2007 Super User Posted August 11, 2007 If I miss fish on a Rogue with 3 treble hooks then I should add more hooks to solve the problem? How can you compare a bait with a single hook with one that has 3 trebles? Now that doesn't make sense! Quote
Super User Catt Posted August 11, 2007 Super User Posted August 11, 2007 If y'all are missing that many fish maybe y'all be using the wrong bait, wrong color, or wrong size. I'm gonna miss some fish but to me that aint no reason to add more hooks Quote

I'm gonna miss some fish but to me that aint no reason to add more hooks Let's just leave it at that. If you don't want to use them, that's up to you. I will keep adding trailer hooks to my spinnerbaits, period. Quote
Super User burleytog Posted August 12, 2007 Super User Posted August 12, 2007 If I'm getting short strikes, I'll throw a trailer hook on there. Most of the time I don't, but then again I don't fish a spinnerbait/buzzbait all that much. Quote
Cajun1977 Posted August 12, 2007 Posted August 12, 2007 i never throw a spinnerbait without a trailer hook, why even take a chance .adding the trailer hook hurts nothing and can only up your catch rate Quote
