Hey guys I’m looking to get a crankbait setup for mostly shallow squarebills (0-4ft) 75% of the time & mid diving (6-12ft) 25% of the time. Which rod do you think would be better a Dobyns Fury 705CB or a Lew’s TP1 black 6’8” med mod/fast (TP1B68MF). Looking to stay in the 100-140$ range on the rod. Also any reel recommendations?

i've fished the fury rod and it was well suited for squarebills, wiggle warts, and other medium diving crank baits. i'd recommend a 6.3.1 gear ratio reel

Thanks EWREX.  any specific reel?

I have a Fuego CT 6.3:1 on a Fury 705CB...no plans to 'upgrade' that setup anytime soon.

really depends on your budget. i'm biased towards daiwa just because i own a ton of their gear, so i could recommend a fuego (just as MN Fisher said above) or a tatula CT. quality reels and you won't break the bank.

I have the SLX DC on my 705CB for throwing cranks in that 0-6ft range. The SLX MGL would be great if you're throwing lighter cranks.

Fuego is also a great option, as others said.

Lews has the TP1X73MH-CB.   Rod that’s made for cranking….  It’s the tp1x rod . They aren’t bad for the price but that dobyns is very whippy , so keep that in mind and where you are fishing  too as that’s Maybe ok for open water situations but not for weeds etc . Depends what you prefer.

Never used a Dobyns rod let alone the one you’re mentioning but I do own a TP1 the model before the X series and I enjoy it very much and highly recommend it. Also mine is paired with a Revo X winch and I love this combination.

How about SLX crankbait rod? I think they are perfect.

The Dobyns 705cb is a great rod for what you are wanting to use it for, that is what mine is used for and it does it very well!

I have a Daiwa Tatula 100H on my Dobyns Fury 705CB. It’s a great rig for squarebills and other light crankbaits.

I’ve got the 705c and the tp black (although in 7’mh/f). My tp rod is a fantastic do-all rod, but I’m really liking my 705 for squarebills and lipless.

You should look at the Lew's CCBR1 it's a 7'2M. It's a tad bit above your price range at $159 but is a great stick for square bills and shallow cranks. The TP1 Black are nice but I don't have one soft enough for cranking. I have no experience with Dobyns rods but a lot of people on here rave about them. As for the reel anything in the 6 or 7 GR with your preferred braking system.

The Fuego is the deal for cranking! I've used DCs, MGLs, SV TWs, Tatula 100s. They have nothing on the Fuego at 13.5lb drag and a user friendly braking system at $99, it's almost a steel. Heads and shoulders better than an SLX and I am a Shimano guy. It also goes great with the Dobyns Kaden red accents!
