From the other thread about rod brand ownership, I can see that not many Megabass rod owners here. I personally never handled one, thinking the performance won't justify the high price. But recently I've been chatting with many Asian anglers, among whom MB rods are dominating over everything else. I may be persuaded a bit to try out my first MB rod this year. Among all the series, the Destroyer Evoluzion, or 鬼斩 in JDM market, seems to get a lot of praise for its performance, which mostly due to its application of Titanium threads through out the blank.  I wonder what others in US think aobut that rod, or other MB series?

What are you looking for in terms of info or rod purchase? I have a couple of P5s, 2 Trizas (traveling rods), and a few Orochis, 2 Levantes. Are you looking for info specifically on the Destroyer Evolution?

For me, Megabass rods are just unique in the sense that they offer a lot of rods that can be very technique specific or hidden multi-purpose rods that was glossed over. The rod that started it all for me was looking for a frog rod that wasn't the typical US frog rod. I ended buying an Orochi XXX Destruction (JDM) and my hook up ratio jumped. Top it off, I could throw heavier baits (up to 2oz) which allowed me to mess around with swimbaits and glidebaits. Even now, the majority of my rods are Megabass because frankly I like the product they produce from rods to baits. I've fished Loomis, Daiwa, Dobyns and a handful of others but do really enjoy my Megabass rods.

Do you think you can punch with that stick? I’m looking at the Matt bucker as well.

Thanks for the detailed info! I am looking for user feedbacks so I could decide which series is worthy of future purchase. The MSRP of Destroyer Evoluzion isn't cheap, but it came up when I told others that I'd like to try one rod that makes MB different from other brands.  For that price, I could as well get a NRX or Conquest, but it's the unique taper of Evoluzion that attracts me more than sensitivity.

I would not punch with the Matt Buckler, the Orochi Destruction would be the better option. If that is a spot in your arsenal you need to fill.

Have you used it for that?

I cannot speak to the Destroyer Evoluzion, a locally guy who does a lot of high end gear reviews I believe had one and wasn't that impressed. Megabass is really known for great reaction rods, but that was his opinion. Look him up on youtube: Punchfishing.

I don't punch, but 1oz would be fine with it. Not sure it would be my go to rod, but it can handle the short use.

I don’t have super heavy cover here in Tennessee, but I fish from a kayak and finding a shorter punching rod is tough. The Expride 7’3” extra heavy seems like the best fit but I love my Megabass sticks.

Yes, I have already watched his review video about that rod. Good info, but if I purchased one, I'd probably use it for jigs.

Gee, I totally forgot them. Thanks for the heads up!

From a general brand standpoint each different MB series stacks up favorably against other brands in each respective price point (IMO obviously).  The recent price increase changes this a little, but it impacts the Levante negatively WAY more than the XX.

I really like Megabass rods, I have almost 30 of them ?....But most of mine are XX's and I don't own an Evoluzion to give you a firsthand report on that line.  If you are interested in seeing how the brand stacks up against others, you might consider starting out with the tried and true workhorse of MB rods which, to me, is the XX series....But that's your choice ultimately :).

What application or applications are you looking to use the rod (or rods ;)) for?

Hmm-I don't know what to tell ya. I feel like there are better rods suited for what you're looking to do and that rod would be overkill. Maybe save and go for an Arms. They are a full custom rod from Megabass but not cheap at all. Not even close.

They are fine rods but the handle and the butt section is way too thin for me. I have FMJ that I barely fish because of that.

Yeah, Orochi rods are really temping, and I prefer full grip rods. But many Asian anglers I talked to suggest a P5 or Evoluzion to truly experience what MB rods stand for, if I only plan on "sampling" a couple of MB rods instead of a whole deck of them. I fish jigs a lot, especially finesse jigs, so naturally a Diablo Type-R may be best for that?

I wasn't talking about the exact model Punchfishing used. Maybe a Diablo Type-R or a Super Diablo? I need to do more research when I got the time, but Arms is definitely out of the question for now. I want to fish a rod, not worship one like a piece of art.

You might want to ask those asian anglers (though not sure why that needs to be specified) to advise you on models in that case.

If you want THE best jig rod, try to find a Phase 3 Bearing Down...I have one and would put up against any rod of any brand past or present as a 3/8 and 1/2oz jig rod.  Hard to find these days though.  This was Yuki Ito's personal design and choice for jigs, so I think it would check the box of "what Megabass rods stand for"...Maybe even more so than any other ?.

I have two Megabass rods, a P5 Super Destroyer and a Levante (haven't fished it yet) and they are well made.  In my opinion, they are well worth the money and are priced below comparable rods from other companies.  The down side is the warranty.  The service and warranty you get from say G. Loomis and St. Croix are far better than Megabass's.

The P5 is comparable to a G. Loomis GLX and almost to an NRX in sensitivity. The styling and design of the rod is exceptional.  Overall, it is one of the funner rods I own.  I use it for just about everything excepts jigs.  I am hoping to get the Levante on the water as soon as the ice melts.

Haha, no specific reasons, just because they have a different mindset on fishing, especially finesse fishing. I think it's mostly influenced by Japan's fishing culture; nonetheless, it gives me a lot of new ideas to think about.  Thanks for the info, like I said, I have a lot of research to do when I have more free time. BTW, what's Phase 3 standing for?

Bummer, that's what I plan to use it for mostly. The craftsmanship is MB's strong suit no doubt, but I heard their warranty had improved somewhat recently? Not sure, maybe rumors.

Destroyer Phase 3 - it was a top line MB rod series from several years back, they still hold their own very well.  The Bearing Down and Nautilus are among the most sought after MB rods.

The P5 Super Destroyer is sort of a do all rod. I didn't care for it for jigs. The taper is sort mod-fast and not what I like when I want to hook a fish quickly. I have a couple of NRX rods that are my favorites for this technique.  If you want a rod specific for jigs from Megabass, the X-Bites is the one everyone was after last year.

Any thoughts on XXX? Specifically the Oneten and Black Elseil II? Thanks

I owned a Black Elseil II for a very short time, I think it would of been better suited for jerkbaits and small cranks. No experience with the Oneten.

The P5 Super Destroyer is a good all-around rod from MegaBass, jigs, Texas-rigs, buzzbaits/buzz toads, smaller frogs. I plan on fishing mine a lot more this summer.

Could you link the rod you’re talking about? I don’t have much experience past the P5s for MegaBass, but if you’re looking to sample go higher is my suggestion. Listen to what others are telling ya.

Megabass USA website doesn't list the Evoluzion series, I found it on its Japan website here:

https://www.megabass.co.jp/site/freshwater/evoluzion-c40-hdts/

It seems like the closest model for jig fishing would be Super Diablo Type-L, the one Punchfishing reviewed in his YT video.  It might be a good fit for me, as I like my jig rods to have a little slower action.  The problem is finding one in US store to try it out first. The few stores that have it are nowhere close to me.  I might eventually go with a P5 first, which is available nearby.

I really wanted to like the P5 X Bites but the trigger was the deal breaker. I couldn't grip it comfortably with the short trigger. It would dig into my finger and when i set the hook i felt like I didn't have as much control. If it had a better trigger i would have added more of the P5 series to my lineup.

I do have the Landsat and Baby Plugging, which i like. The handle took a little bit of getting use too but now i like it. I hope Megabass comes out with more spinning models.
