Ordered a Cardiff that was “new in box”, and it does look new. However, the drag was CRANKED down. I’ve backed it off but as I tighten the drag, it adds resistance to turning the handle. Like bad.

any thoughts? Return?

Update. Maybe spool tension but still not very smooth even with it loosened up. Like there’s a “rough” part some where in the winding process. This the norm with these reels?

Back everything off - push the cast button, and open the spool tension knob just until you just get spool side play.

Wind it to click and drive the spool.

Back off the star drag until it won't turn the spool any more with your thumb on the spool.

You should be able to back the star drag even further, to where the spool won't turn even without your thumb on it.

Report back to us how it gears feel in those three different drag setting.

Where did you purchase the reel? Some retailers will re ship returned products without checking them, like Amazon.

Tom

PS, Smooth Drags only cost a few dollars for your reel, good upgrade.

It’s a minor adjustment and easy fix. Actually had nothing to do with the drag itself.

@bulldog1935, I’ll do that right now!

Taking it to work tomorrow and going to make some casts at a pond and see how it does. @Delaware Valley Tackle, I’ll give you a call tomorrow after I get it out! Regardless of if it improves I may need to speak with you about it anyways.

thanks guys!

It was on eBay from an individual. He stated “no returns” but I saw enough upon opening the box to think it’s not “new in box” therefore wouldn’t match the description. So, I may be able to return it, but not sure it’s worth the hassle honestly.

We’ll talk tomorrow. It’s not defective, rest easy. If I don’t pick up leave a message and I’ll get back.

@Delaware Valley Tackle resurrecting this, you helped me out last time and I bought another one and having the same issue but can’t remember what the fix was from the phone call. I remember it was a spindle or something I think you called it? Similar sounding word maybe?
