Casting vs flipping jig heads

Is there a big difference between the two? This question has always bothered me, both are labeled for different purposes but basically look the same. I've used both styles for the same purpose and haven't noticed a real difference. Is it all just bait marketing? I'm not a huge jig expert so I haven't really dived deep into the specifics

First off, in flipping, there is no casting, it's a technique for fishing real heavy cover, that isn't concussive to casting into. It's also a close quarter technique unlike casting.

Casting or " pitching" to a target is totally different. Not sure if that answers your ? or not.

Basics is Arkie jig design is more compact with shorter heavy dia wire stronger hook, the Football jig hook is longer with smaller dia wire hook then a Flippin jig.

There is a tone jig head options.

It sorta answers it. It's just that many flipping and casting heads look identical.

In some cases yeah. To me flipping jig is 30 degree or less line tie, a streamlined bullet-style head, and a compact heavy gauge hook. Casting jig by contrast is arkie style head, commonly 60 degree line tie, with often a longer hook but sometimes not. 
 

I think there’s plenty of induced- confusion over lure manufacturers mislabeling jig head styles or creating entirely new categories to describe their jig style when in reality it is just a close match to an older style.

I appreciate the details about the differences between the hook sizes. But I've also seen flipping hooks with those thicker compact hook sizes like you would see on traditional casting jigs I'll PM you when I can for the article!

It’s a good article and is influencing types of jigs Im looking at using for casting.

You can cast a flipping jig and flip it into heavy and get it out without always snagging. You cast a Football jig and have high % of Strike to hook sets because the distance between the back of the jig head is longer, further back in the basses and sticks mouth tissue. If you flip a football jig into cover your chances of not snagging is nil.

Arkie jigs were the original Flippin/pitching jigs. Jigs with hook eye at the jig nose were originally grass jigs. Jig head shapes are continuously changing to optimize multiple use and strike to hook set %.

The head shapes and line ties can be identical, but what really sets a flipping jig apart from a casting jig IMO is the weed guard and hook.  Some casting jigs have lighter wire hooks and moderate weed guard.  A flipping is generally always going to have heavy weedguard and a heavy wire hook to deal with the cover.
