Chet C Posted January 22, 2022 Posted January 22, 2022 my son bought me a new Daiwa Tatula spinning rod, dealer finally got them in stock, so now i want to put a size 30 or maybe a 25 reel on it, i love my Daiwa reels but after my sons last Tatula reel (200 dollars) only 4 or 5 months old the anti reverse failed, he sent it back and Daiwa responded they wanted 90 bucks charge for a special lube and yada ect, so i said sand it back and i repaired it myself, so it brings me to want to try another brand, i seem to find the Legalis reels very smooth, but still want to try something different, i have a few shimano's they are ok, but still seem to see the Legalis reels are smoother, so are the Garcia's in the run for smooth spinning reels never had one in spinning, but have a few older garcia bait casters and they are great. what is the popular Garcia spinning reels these days that are smooth ect, in the 125 dollar range. chet Quote
Super User ATA Posted January 22, 2022 Super User Posted January 22, 2022 This guy can help you to choose, I found him expert to know spinning reels, Even he is talking about ultra light, but you can apply it in any size reel. 3 Quote
Cigarguy Posted January 22, 2022 Posted January 22, 2022 ^^ I agree. He actually talks about and review stuff rather than just unboxing and listing features that are on the manufacturer's website. Personally I'd stick to either a Daiwa or Shimano. I hear you about Daiwa. Last year I bought 3 Fuegos of different size. My Fuego 2500 real lost the magseal. Some how it got demagnetized, I saw red fluid oozing out of the reel and no more magseal less than a year old. Daiwa will not sell the magseal fluid (ferrofluid) and it cost more than new to send it in for repairs. So I took the magseal out turning the Fuego into a red Exceler. My favourite reel over the past year is the new Shimano Ultegra. I just love this reel. Do yourself a favour, check it out and if you can go into the store and check it out. i_fish have a good review of it too. 2 Quote
SmugOne Posted January 22, 2022 Posted January 22, 2022 I second the Ultegra and would add the Vanford if you are looking for smooth. Shimano’s have been very reliable for me too. If you want to try another Daiwa, I have been pleased with my Ballistic LT. 1 Quote

Talk about functional eye candy. @Chet C Wow. How in the world could the reel not be under warranty? Sorry for a not so ideal experience. I do have an Abu cardinal and I love this reel, but it’s from the lower end so I’m sorry I can’t help you there. As others have mentioned, it couldn’t hurt to explore Shimano’s reels if you haven’t already. 1 Quote
Super User JustJames Posted January 23, 2022 Super User Posted January 23, 2022 If you want smooth, Daiwa can’t be beat compare at the same price point. I have Old Abu CD4 center brake, the reel were great but anti reverse stop working after a couple years. I have Shimano CI4 and the reel lost smoothness after a few years of used. I have Vanford even brand new still not as smooth as the cheapest Daiwa I have. I also have Sahara about 10-15 years old, still work fine and somewhat smooth enough but got noisy. I own a few Daiwa, Legalis, Exceler, Fuego, Tatula, Kage and ballistic FW and none of them have anti reverse problem yet. These reels got used hard the past couple years and still perform great. BTW I never touch Daiwa anti reverse (back reeling) and prefer not to have it. If you wanna try Daiwa again and doesn’t need anti reverse goes with MQ body like New BG or Caldia (oversea). Quote
thunderblack Posted January 24, 2022 Posted January 24, 2022 I'd rather handline bass then run another Abu spinner.....just my 2 cents 1 2 Quote

Super User DitchPanda Posted January 24, 2022 Super User Posted January 24, 2022 I'm done with pflueger..used to be my go to but they have disappointed me the past several years. Daiwa is at the top of the spinning reel game IMO...not hard to find a smooth functional reel at almost any price point. If you have a bad taste in your mouth about Daiwa then I'd say Shimano is the next logical choice. 1 Quote

I was able to find a Daiwa Fuego LT2000S-XH on the bay from eastern Europe. Took a gamble and ordered it on a Friday afternoon and it was delivered for $15.00 on the following Monday afternoon. I don't think I could have ordered it domestically and had it quicker (if they even sold that model in the USA). I always check to see if I can find shallow spool versions for the same reason as you. If not, I use that stretchy athletic tape to take up space before spooling. On the Daiwa models that offer both a 2000D and a 2500D version, they usually both have the same diameter arbor on the spool, but the 2500D spool is a tiny bit larger on the outside diameter. On the the ones I have tried (Kage and Tatula), I could interchange the spools, but I wouldn't count on it working across the board. Quote

The Tatula offers a shallow spool in the 3000 size. I bought one last year. It is the reason I did buy it. It is a great reel. Smooth, great drag. Quote

Super User JustJames Posted January 24, 2022 Super User Posted January 24, 2022 Deep spool or shallow spool, I’m not worry much. Most spinning users probably will use backing anyway. If you plan to use all mono/FC, just think as one time investment. Once you ready to re-spool again just cut where you see the line that never get used (lay pretty twisted and flat on spool) 8 hours ago, Big Hands said: I always check to see if I can find shallow spool versions for the same reason as you. I’m not sure if you still can find one now. A couple friend got them and they like it a lot. Something like this but it was 15 bucks at that time. https://www.ebay.com/itm/254963069983?hash=item3b5cfbb41f:g:ITcAAOSwUAtgjYeC 1 Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted January 25, 2022 Posted January 25, 2022 Mag seal has zero appeal to me. Grease on the seam has helped kept reels running for 20 years plus. 1 Quote
