Msl819 Posted January 21, 2022 Posted January 21, 2022 I saw that too… I am a big fan of the current model. Curious how much difference the improvements/upgrades will make. I need another combo like I need to get hit by a bus! But that Bantam and ExPride did catch my eye! And don’t get me started on the new Stella. Not sure why I have the infatuation I do for spinning reels but something about watching all those parts spinning and moving in precision is almost hypnotic to me! https://www.google.com/search?q=shimano+stella+fk+2022&client=safari&hl=en-us&ei=YBjrYYqWOY-3qtsP5t-hiAE&oq=shimano+stella+fk&gs_lcp=ChNtb2JpbGUtZ3dzLXdpei1zZXJwEAEYATIFCAAQxAIyBQgAEMQCMgUIIRCgAToCCCk6BwgAEEcQsAM6BQgAEJECOggIABCxAxCRAjoFCAAQgAQ6DgguELEDEMcBENEDEJECOgsIABCxAxCDARCRAjoICAAQgAQQsQM6CAgAELEDEIMBOgsIABCABBCxAxCDAUoECEEYAFCfCFi3MWDwQ2gCcAJ4AIABmQSIAcIbkgEMMC4xMS4xLjEuMi4xmAEAoAEBwAEB&sclient=mobile-gws-wiz-serp#fpstate=ive&vld=cid:38255241,vid:G1r1gZo57Ig,st:0 2 Quote

The only difference I saw besides the color was they added the MGL III spool which should be a nice improvement in casting performance especially with lighter baits but not such a big difference as to make me want to upgrade my current Bantams. 1 Quote

I didn’t check weight. Has the 22 model shed much weight. The main complaint I heard about the 18 was how portly it is. Quote

The weight never really bothered me for the type of rods I have mine on. I actually prefer it for those applications over my Metaniums. Quote
Super User FishTank Posted January 22, 2022 Super User Posted January 22, 2022 On a side note..... Did anybody see the Shimano Crankbaits. They look like the WEC baits (old Zoom). Nice but makes me wonder if they are ripping off a legend or bringing back a classic. 2 Quote

For me, sometimes when things get too light they can begin to feel cheap. That is not the case with the 18 Bantam. Hilt like a tank is a great description. Quote

Which won’t matter much as the line guide position so close to the spool was the main reason it was a poor caster. The angle of attack coming off the spool was really severe on the 18s. Honestly the weight is such an issue with high end rods feeling strange in hand. A 7.8oz reel on a sub 5oz rod leads to a bad time for me. I need more photos to see if the line guide issue was fixed. 18 minutes ago, Msl819 said: Weight didn’t bother me either. For me, sometimes when things get too light they can begin to feel cheap. Comparing the feel of a 20 Met or Steez in hand to a Bantam really shows you can have light weight and solid feeling reels. 7.8 oz is too heavy for a $300+ reel. 1 Quote
T2DM Posted January 22, 2022 Posted January 22, 2022 This is from Shimano Japan Website: more stretched and stronger. strong barsatiles that penetrate through. The bantam that creates a new world of StrongBersatile has evolved further. The NEW Bantam is equipped with the 150th size Magnum Light Spool III. φ3/19mm and the spool is larger than the previous model, and the compatibility with the centrifugal brake is enhanced by narrowing, and by moving the line guide a little forward, a stretch cast feel reminiscent of 19 Antales has been acquired. The high-rigidity core solid body incorporates low-protein's first infinity drive. The significant reduction in rotational resistance enables powerful and direct winding, greatly improving the ability to detect changes such as water flow resistance received from the bottom and lure. It is one that leads strong versa tiles up a notch. It doesn't matter I'm gonna end up buying the darn thing regardless. 1 Quote
The Maestro Posted January 22, 2022 Posted January 22, 2022 They had me right up until the low protein part. Strictly high protein reels for this guy. 2 Quote
mrpao Posted January 22, 2022 Posted January 22, 2022 My biggest issue with my current bantams are the weight. Since shimano didn't pit the bantam on a diet, I really see no reason to pick up the new model. I wish it would have dropped at least an oz. Then I would be interested. I would love to see the new curado 150 mgl in a 5:1 gear ratio for crankbaits. 1 Quote

I do prefer my Metaniums and 21 Zillion but it is still a great reel for me. I didn’t find the casting to be as bad as many say. I am also not usually going for maximum distance on most casts. 1 Quote
Super User jbsoonerfan Posted January 22, 2022 Super User Posted January 22, 2022 If 6.5 oz vs 7.6 oz makes a difference to you in a reel, maybe it's time to take up a new hobby. 8 1 1 Quote

Basswhippa Posted January 22, 2022 Posted January 22, 2022 I have 15 E series, and 3 bantams. The Bantams cast standard weight lures a mile. I can sling a weightless fluke on 50 pound braid furtherthan it needs to be cast. I dont understandthe poor casting comments, unless its for tiny lures. . And they all weigh about 7.8 ounces. No problem with the weight. I don't lift weights and I'm in my early 50s and occasionally fish 15 hour days. 3 Quote

When the weight of a reel throws off the weight of a 7’5” rod yeah it matters. I don’t want to fight with a stick while pitching or making hundreds of short casts a day. Weight doesn’t matter when I’m bombing a deep crank as the rod stays in the same position most of the retrieve. I’m sorry you’re used to combos weighing almost a pound, and didn’t realize it was a point of pride. 1 2 Quote

Go back 15-20 years, most reels weighed between 8 to almost 10oz. I also tournament fish with a guy that has 5 older Curados. They weigh about 9oz and he uses G. Loomis E6X rods. One of his combos that he flips and pitches with is a 894C and with a Curado 200B. He's 67 years old and can skip and pinpoint a lure just about anywhere and do this all day. I don't think the weight of his reel ever comes into question. He also has the 904C FSR, 783C, 843C CBR, and I think the 802C (doesn't use it often) all matched with the older Curados. 2 Quote

Bet he doesn't wear skinny jeans either. 2 Quote

Nope, he has the kind that need both a belt and suspenders and they get rolled up 3 inches at the bottom. Plumbers crack can be an issue..... ? 2 Quote
