MidwestBassAttack Posted January 21, 2022 Posted January 21, 2022 Looking for feedback on a current model Loomis GLX 854C. Rod will be used for 3/8 and 1/2 jigs and Texas rigs with a 5/16 or 3/8 weight for worms and creatures. I had an NRX+873CRR but did not like the recoil guides at all. Also had a GLX 895c that was sold due to how tip heavy it was. Any feedback from any users? #1 - is the 4 power suited for what I want to throw? #2 - how is the balance? I’m afraid of it being tip heavy like my old 895. Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted January 21, 2022 Super User Posted January 21, 2022 I have 2 4 series in different lengths and 2 3 series. I don’t like the 4 for 3/8 baits. I only use them for 1/2 and heavier. 1 Quote
Super User FishTank Posted January 21, 2022 Super User Posted January 21, 2022 I have the 873 CCR NRX and love it. Great rod and very versatile. It is my favorite choice for what you are wanting to fish. If you don't like the Recoil guides, then you might look at the 844C MBR GLX. The Jig and Worm extra fast tips are definitely different from the CCR. The MBR would be the closest. I do like the JWR's. I have the 803C GLX and the 853 NRX. I use these guys for the same stuff just a little lighter. What reel you put these rods will also change the tip heavy feeling. 1 Quote
lunkerboss923 Posted December 26, 2023 Posted December 26, 2023 854C is what you want. I started fishing Dobyns rods. My standard jig rod was the 744. The 854 is very close minus the 4". They both have fast tips and stif all the way through the blank. The beauty about the 854 is I'm a kayaker and bank fisherman, so I don't need a long rod as I'm beating bank and pitching targets. JohnFromLisbon Posted December 26, 2023 Posted December 26, 2023 I have the GLX 854 and that is exactly what I use it for. For smaller football jigs on braid to leader you can't beat the 844 MBR, but for everything else, especially on straight fluoro, this is the setup. The balance is really good - I have mine with a Curado 151 MGL and 17lb Shooter and it balances just fine. I love to throw compact pitching jigs on that setup. P.S: just noticed the original post is from almost two years ago, sorry. Hope you haven't held off on it since 😅 1 Quote
Super User MickD Posted December 26, 2023 Super User Posted December 26, 2023 854C is 7 foot 1 in heavy power. It's a pretty stout blank, so if worried about balance you might go shorter, like 6 1/2. Or find one and try your reel on it. Balance has a lot to to with reel and length of the rod. I wouldn't pay that much for a rod without knowing for sure it fit my needs. In ALL aspects of needs. I read the original post, then after reading the replies, realized I was the OP 😂😂😂. Rods, rods, and more rods since then 🙊 5 Quote
FrnkNsteen Posted December 26, 2023 Posted December 26, 2023 Too funny!! So have you been happy with the 854C? I'm normally not a Loomis fan, but got a good price on an IMX Pro 854C this fall and picked it up,... So I am curious. Quote
rangerjockey Posted December 26, 2023 Posted December 26, 2023 Personally ,If I wanted a 4 power GLX for those applications I'd buy a 844 MBR .I've owned a 854 in a NRX and it's a good dragging rod but those MBR actions are just special. 1 Quote

They're special because of the versatility. If you needed only one rod to empty your tacklebox on, it would be the 844MBR. I prefer the 843MBR, because I love the the 854c for bottom contact. It doesn't get much better than a Biffle head, Mag curly tail worm on a 3/8 tungsten, or 3/8 to 1/2 football head. Awesome Texas Rig rod. 843mbr excels with 1.5 squarebills and 3/8 to 1/2 chatterbaits and spinnerbaits. Quote
