Super User Bird Posted January 18, 2022 Super User Posted January 18, 2022 Used the search and didn't get what I was looking for. Has/does anyone use polarized progressive sunglasses and what are your thoughts ? Have never worn prescription glasses but have an upcoming eye appointment and likely going with progressive lenses for both, every day use and sunglasses for fishing. My eye doctor carries Maui Jim's and Oakley that I know of and got a feeling This will likely be quite expensive and would rather not screw this up. Lol Quote
Zippo Guy Posted January 18, 2022 Posted January 18, 2022 I have worn prescription glasses for the last 40 years. I have always had an extra pair of dark glasses with polarized lens made at the same time for outside activities. When I finally needed progressive lens I had them put in both pair of glasses. You can have your dark glasses put in any frame, depends on your insurance and how much you want to spend out of pocket. I don't know of any downside not to get them. If you have worn polarized glasses before you know the pluses and minuses. There is no difference with progressive lens. 1 1 Quote
Super User FishTank Posted January 18, 2022 Super User Posted January 18, 2022 My wife has them and the only advice I can give is to buy a slightly bigger frame. Hers are huge but they make it better for driving. We found Costco to have the best prices and the best lenses. 1 Quote
padlin Posted January 18, 2022 Posted January 18, 2022 I'm on my 2nd pair of WileyX Omega's https://www.wileyx.com/wx-omega and won't be without. Mine are progressive, polarized copper lenses. They are sort of wrap arounds with light blocking ear pieces so I do not get any light from the sides. They work well but I went thru an optometrist as I was concerned about getting the pupal height correct. If you wear progressives you know what I am talking about. Not cheap but they do exactly what I wanted them to. You can go work your way through the website to see how much they run with the options you want. FWIW, at an optician in an expensive part of town, I was quoted over $1k, the out of the way optician was about half that. If I order in a year that I do not order regular glasses, the sunglasses can be had through my insurance, saving a couple hundred, more or less. I'm allowed the discount on one pair of specs per calendar year. 1 1 Quote
padlin Posted January 18, 2022 Posted January 18, 2022 It occurred to me you might want to get just 1 set of regular progressives and see how you make out with them before getting the shades. Many folks don't take to them. 2 Quote
Jmilburn76 Posted January 18, 2022 Posted January 18, 2022 My last few pairs of glasses I bought online, the process was easy and it saved me $100s and that was without using insurance. My latest pair is progressive lenses but they aren't polarized and are just transitions xtractive. I do have a pair of Wiley-x and Amphibia(they float!), that are pretty nice. I like framesdirect and sportrx for online stores. The best pair of regular glasses I have ever bought was Oakley Airdrop which also had the transitions xtractive. 1 1 Quote

I'll discuss this with the optometrist, perhaps bifocals may be the recommendation. Quote
Super User J._Bricker Posted January 19, 2022 Super User Posted January 19, 2022 Well @Bird, I finally bit the bullet and got a pair of prescription sunglasses with progressive, blended bi-focal lenses. I just got tired of always having to take off my sunglasses and put on my prescription glasses or readers to retie. I went with Costas with green mirror and copper lenses. And yes, they were pretty spendy. *as a side note, I had to ask optometrist for the original Costa lenses which came with the glasses. He was kinda surprised by my request, saying nobody ever asks for them…. 1 1 Quote
Super User T-Billy Posted January 19, 2022 Super User Posted January 19, 2022 I've been wearing progressives for almost 5yrs now. The only way to fly IMO. I have them keep the transition pretty low and I adjusted to them in just a few hours. I drive truck and my employer buys me a pair of clear and polarized sunglasses every other year. I'm sure they're not cheap, but it's nice being able to see to tie knots with my shades on. I'd purchase them myself if my employer didn't. 1 Quote
Super User Scott F Posted January 19, 2022 Super User Posted January 19, 2022 I’ve always thought that Maui Jim’s, Oakleys and other high end sunglasses are vastly overpriced and have never proven their value to me. I wear progressive prescription glasses and use clip on polarized sunglasses for driving and cocoon polarized sunglasses that fit over my normal glasses for fishing, saving me hundreds of dollars. 2 Quote
Super User Hammer 4 Posted January 19, 2022 Super User Posted January 19, 2022 I've had my Maui Jims for going on 9 years now. Figure over that time period, they come out fairly reasonably priced imho. I've used them for fishing, golfing and everyday wearing. 2 Quote
Super User Spankey Posted January 19, 2022 Super User Posted January 19, 2022 My progressive Sunglasses for fishing are my sunglasses for everything. Have had polarized for as long as I remember. If you need the progressive for up close, and start getting accustomed to them, the minute you abandon them you will not be happy. The progressive will not have any effect on fishing. Not sure if this is the right word but everyone’s stigmatism is different. Your eye dr. Should be able to accommodate your needs. I have a progressive in my shooting glasses. They tried it without it at first. Than they redone them. World of difference. 1 1 Quote
Johnbt Posted January 19, 2022 Posted January 19, 2022 I wore progressives for many, many years - until I had cataract surgery and now I can drive without glasses. But I use $9 reading glasses from Dollar General. Fwiw, I was approximately 20/1200 and could only focus out to 8 inches or so. Progressives worked for me. Progressives frequently drive new users crazy until they learn to use them. For instance, when driving you will probably have to lift your head slightly up and to the right to use the rearview mirror. If you don't you'll be looking through the wrong part of the lens - the right edge. You will quickly learn that the useful part of the lens is a narrow part running vertically in the center of the lens. Look through the top for distance and near the bottom for up close. The medium distances are seen by slightly lowering or raising your head a mere fraction of an inch. Think in terms of thousandths. Be careful on stairs at first. If you get to the top of stairs and glance down you'll be looking through the near-vision part of the lens. Just little things to be aware of and learn about. It becomes second nature if you stick with it for a week or a month. Quite a few people try progressives for 30 minutes or an hour and toss them in a drawer while cursing. Give them a chance. Quote

Lol I'm a college student and have had poor vision all my life, here is my reccomendation. 1. Don't buy from doctors office unless you really like the frame, they are insanely pricey. 2. Don't go to lenscrafters if you want a name brand frame, just go to the company itself and it's cheaper 3. The way I go (I think it's the best) is go to Costco and look for a comfortable frame in the eyeglass section you think will work for sunglasses, ask for polarization of corse, and make sure to ask for the different color options. They have brown/amber and grey; I really like the Amber's for fishing. Finally, the cheapest option is the fit over style glasses that are polarized like exhibit A, these are fine and get the job done, plus you don't need to switch between two frames if you go out to eat after a trip of fishing. https://www.amazon.com/Sunglasses-Polarized-Prescription-Eyeglasses-Protection/dp/B07DJMRZBC/ref=asc_df_B07FK3TTYW?tag=bngsmtphsnus-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=80539344295178&hvnetw=s&hvqmt=e&hvbmt=be&hvdev=m&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=&hvtargid=pla-4584138871473391&psc=1&th=1 P.S I totally forgot and I know it's hard but we have to get the idea out of our heads when it comes to name brand perscription sunglasses if we are on a budget like Oakley under armor Costa etc etc, the estimate for me was roughly 600$ 1 1 Quote

WC53 Posted January 20, 2022 Posted January 20, 2022 On about my 5th pair of polarized progressives… worth the investment if you need them. I prefer the variations or brown as I can use them earlier and later in the day. I try and only take one pair fishing, you know because of Murphy… There are bunch of different patterns on the field shapes. A good optometrist can talk to you about your usage and recommend a lens. Unfortunately the good ones are $$$. I like trivex material better than poly or the fancy plastics. Also impact resistant. 1 Quote

This ^^^^ trivex is really nice, newer to the market but really nice, and not all polycarbonate lens are equal, the ones that came from my doctors are not as clear as the costco kind, same perscription, also I find the polarization on the Costco ones I'd much better and let's less glare appear on the water 1 Quote
LadiMopar Posted January 30, 2022 Posted January 30, 2022 How about a lovely pair of Cocoons? They come in a variety of color combos, mirrored, Polarized etc. for specific activities. They slip right over your prescription eyewear. I use the amber lenses with green mirror which is recommended for fishing/water sport (the dragonflies seem to think I'm a strangely formed relative <grin>) and the price is reasonable; about $50 - 60 bucks depending on size/style, and the frames are guaranteed for life. https://cocoonseyewear.com/ LM 1 2 Quote

I first thought about getting my prescription put into a pair of sunglasses but just couldn't help but think about all the other things I could do with the money they were charging for them. I just couldn't justify it. Then, I was at a CVS and jokingly told my wife I was going to get some of the huge ones and just wear them over my glasses to fish. Then, I realized they were actually made to fit over and surprisingly didn't look COMPLETELY terrible considering they were $20. So, I got them for fishing but knew there had to be better alternatives and found Cocoons. I gotta say, they're not bad. The fit isn't exactly perfect for my face because of the sizing needed to fit over my regular glasses. But they're passable and work pretty well so far. The Cocoons are around $65, and quality definitely better than the generic $20 CVS versions...aaaaand cheaper than the almost-$600 the eye place quotes. I'd say maybe give those a shot and see what you think. 1 Quote
Super User scaleface Posted July 3, 2022 Super User Posted July 3, 2022 I wear progressive scrips 100 per cent of the time . They now make a transition lens that turn darker and also polarize when they turn dark . Thats what I'm getting next . Even on cloudy days my lens turn dark . The only downside is they wont be amber but that is no big deal . Quote
