Super User Bird Posted January 17, 2022 Super User Posted January 17, 2022 For those effective by the latest east coast snowstorm, be careful and pace yourself. We have about 7" with a layer of ice on top making it equivalent to shoveling gravel. Every year locally I hear of heart attacks while shoveling snow. Take your time. ? 4 Quote
Super User J Francho Posted January 17, 2022 Super User Posted January 17, 2022 We didn't get the ice crust, but it's a lot more than 7" and still coming. Pace yourself is good advice. 1 Quote

Super User Jig Man Posted January 17, 2022 Super User Posted January 17, 2022 For me it was to clear the drive so I could get the boat out. That was before I got my snow blower. 1 Quote

Super User Way2slow Posted January 17, 2022 Super User Posted January 17, 2022 Actually, shoveling snow is one of the main causes of heart attacks in the areas that get the stuff. Us old farts sit around doing very little all year, then get out there and start clearing the stuff, forgetting we are not still the young gun we once were 2 Quote

Heart attack snow isn’t snow-blowable (is that a word?). Believe me, I’ve tried. When it’s that really sloppy heavy wet stuff with a high water content around the freezing point, it comes out of the snow blower like ketchup. All you can do is shovel it or let it melt. We often get some in March up here. The snow that is light and fluffy like powder is the stuff that my snow blower can send 40 feet into the next county. That’s the snow we’ve getting up here lately because it’s been colder out. 2 Quote

This machine is a beast and has yet to meet its match - and there's been plenty of opportunities. https://youtu.be/zl0DDZEBbKk A-Jay 3 Quote

How do you get it to spray that wet heavy syrup-type snow far enough though? Maybe yours just has a lot more power than mine. Clearly it already has more traction with a tandem axle and chains. That one photo with the snow plow going by is good timing. That stuff the plow leaves at the end of the driveway is nasty stuff too. 1 Quote
Super User Bird Posted January 17, 2022 Author Super User Posted January 17, 2022 Not having owned a snow blower for years " use an ATV " I believe the 2-stage units can move the wet stuff better than single stage. 1 Quote

When there's enough snow, This Honda HS1332 will blast it away. Have never had an situation where the unit was unable to do what I needed it to. With as much snow as we get and the size of the areas I need to clear, if it didn't do it, I'd get something that did. A-Jay Quote

Oh absolutely. Single stage aren't self-propelled so you actually have to push the machine to make it blow the snow. Think of it as a lawn mower. A push mower needs the user to push it in order to cut grass where as a self-propelled lawn mower will do it once you engage it, and all you have to do is steer and walk behind it. Anything over about 6 inches at a time is pretty useless with a single stage snow blower. The advantage is that they only cost about half as much as a 2-stage and they aren't nearly as heavy. Some climates are fit for them, ours up here is not. Quote

Thanks That said......ain't no way am I pushing a snowblower around. Lol Quote

Sometimes I am gone for work and my wife needs to use the snow blower. There's no way she could do it if I had a single stage and she had to "push" it through deep snow. With a single stage snow blower, it all happens in "one" stage. Most of my neighbors all have snow blowers here and none of them are single stage - they are all 2 stage. I don't see any quite as souped up as @A-Jay tandem axle with chains, but then again I live in a suburb and he lives out in a more rural area with a longer driveway too. 2 Quote
Super User J Francho Posted January 17, 2022 Super User Posted January 17, 2022 @A-Jay can you Pm me the model and about what you paid for that Honda? I'm debating a plow service or a nice machine. I have a single stage, but for this snow we got, it's not up to it. It's good to about 6". The fire hydrants are buried this afternoon. 3 Quote

padlin Posted January 17, 2022 Posted January 17, 2022 I tried shoveling the 5" of slush the am, no way, having a stroke did occur to me. Glad I bought a heavy duty blower 10 years or so ago, don't need the power very often, but it's awful nice when you need it. No problem with the slush ,ketchup is a fair descriptor. Even on high it would only toss it 6 or 8 feet. I've had smaller machines before, the problem is the heavy wet snow blocks up the chute. I have a neighbor with a single stage, I saw someone plowing his drive today. 1 Quote

Nah, all that work of beating him to death would probably just give you a heart attack ?. Most of the time around here, it’s cold enough that it’s fairly fluffy and it throws a long ways. Sometimes we get that heavy wet stuff though. A trick I learned a while ago was to spray the inside of the chute with Pam cooking spray at the start of the season. It makes the chute a bit slicker, and helps throw the snow further. Also, the cooking spray doesn’t hurt the environment being mixed with the snow, like any automotive oils would. 1 Quote
