I've read a lot of post on anchoring kayaks. The way i've been anchoring in less that 6ft is with a tomato stake with of my dirt bike handle grips glue to one end. What i do is run it thru one of the scupper holes and works for me. Anyone else tried this? Only problem is in really shallow the handle it sticking up so high it kind of gets in the way but i work around it.

I read somewhere that the boat/kayak rocking can cause stress cracks around the hole, true or false? I've though about doing the same.

Everything I’ve read is that using a stake through a scupper hole is a bad idea. Voids warranty on some kayaks as well. Better to use an anchor trolley or a short length of rope/paracord tied to stake and a cleat on your kayak.

What do you do if a SUDDEN SQUAL line comes at you  from shore ? I have had 5 minute squalls that made up 2 foot waves.

Not a good idea to use a scupper for anything other than draining water.  scupper holes are designed to drain water and to provide structural rigidity to the deck of the kayak.  Use an anchor trolley and not only can you keep your kayak from breaking but you can also change the location to set your direction to where you want it to be.  On lakes my anchor trolley and stake out pole are one of the most critical pieces of gear.

Anchor trolleys on even canoes are 'da bomb'. I had one on the Sun Dolphin and it was really easy to set direction...and even change orientation if the wind direction changed while I was out.

I use a manual micro anchor. Was gonna get the power micro anchor and saw so many YT vids of problems I backed off. The owner of my local shop is also an owner of Yakgadget and their manufacturing is local. For $199 I got the apparatus that connected to the boat and an 8" pole. It's really solid and they make them specifically for the Hobie and other boats as well. With the Hobie it mounts where that plate is on the back and then the rear grab H-Rail. Solid as a rock.

I'm a shallow water guy anyway and I let the rope down and I'm anchorched, then pull it up and take off. I used it a lot in Nov and most of Dec and then at the beginning of January we got rare mid TN snow and ice since so no fishing for me.

I use to use a garden stake and clip onto it using a fish grips that is tied to my kayak.  Easy to detach when needed.

As many have said, a post through the scupper hole is not a good idea.

I’ve used the Anchor Wizard for a couple year and really love it!

I use an anchor trolley and just push my garden stake through it.  I don't even tie it off.  And if it slips off, which hasn't happened yet, the stake floats, so I'm not worried about losing it.  Plus, it didn't cost me anything.

Though I typically will just drop a grapple anchor and use a very short rode.  I have issues with the stake holding still.  The bottom of my lakes are usually soft mud with a layer of hard clay below it, so it's hard to get it to get enough bite to be effective.  That, and there's usually not a lot of areas where the water is shallow enough to use a stake without being just a foot or two off the bank.

Hobie scupper holes are reinforced. I think they would handle an anchor pole.

nut my friend used a trolly and jabbed stake thru the ring. It was very effective.

I need to come up with some anchor option.  But I’ve done well three years now just floating around.

I only use my kayak in rivers and streams and use a 2' piece of 3/8ths chain on a 15' rope through the front handle of the kayak.  I have a clam cleat riveted on a gunwale to hold the rope when I paddle.

I had a DIY anchor like this for my sit in kayak. I have since retired it in favor of a brush anchor. There is always something around on shore, overhanging or sticking up out of the water to clip it to.

I run an anchor wizard through an anchor trolley to a 8lb mushroom anchor. I had a 5lb mushroom anchor, but gave it to my son who had an issue with the claw anchor he was using and I haven't been able to find another 5lb but 5 was perfect.

Have you used it in rocky rivers by chance? Wondering how well it would work in my shallow river. Been thinking about one for a while now.

Also, does the weight of the pole sticking up rock your boat much as you move around?

I use a stakeout pole with my anchor trolly and it works perfectly. I use to use scupper holes as well with no damage that i can tell but the pole was in my way a lot. I highly suggest a trolly with anchor and/or stakeout pole

I have a pole but can not get it to stick in the bottom on lake Champlain. Even putting all my weight on it. So there must be rocks that prevent getting that in. There is a serious risk that when you push the pole in you extend just far enough off the kayak that you cant get back (don’t ask).

i bought a wind sock last year and are a big believer in the value of that.

Sorry for the delay, tax season is kicking my tail. I have used it in shallow, rocky areas with significant current and it works well. The pole that comes with it is blunt and you can sharpen it to a point. The owner advised me to use it without sharpening at first because he thought it worked better.

If I'm scooting along with my 230# plus the weight of a Hobie PA, I can deploy the pole and I can feel it scoot across rocks a few inches and then I stop. As with any rear pole anchor depending on current and wind you can pivot. Yakgagdet also makes this piece that's a pole and/or paddle holder with a hole to put a stakeout pole as well. It attaches to your H-rail if you have a Hobie or your track on another kayak. If I feel I'm pivoting around and want to face a certain direction, I stick that stake out pole thru the hole and I'm solid.

I have either an 8 or 9' pole I forget it's back there unless I need to deploy it. But I have a big wide kayak. The only thing that got me and it only took one launch to rectify is I put the collar a bit high so when it wasn't in use it hung down a bit low. When I put my cart underneath and lifted the front to pull it, the pole dragged the ground. I lifted the pole by lowering the collar so it matched the level of my stowed rudder everything has been rosy since.

I actually fished a tournament a week or two ago and the temp was in the 20s and the wind was high 20s with gusts to 40. I tied for first but the lake was almost 6' low and there's a lot of rock. This is a dammed lake that was generating plus the wind and I remember thinking I was glad I had that pole as opposed to fooling with a drop weight anchor every few minutes.

If you are a river kayak angler, trust me, once you go power pole you never go back

Ive had my kayak for 3 yrs and finally broke down and ordered a Yakattack anchor trolley. Im thinking of also adding the quickstop anchor system from Yakgadget if I can swap the mount for the pole to the right side.https://yakgadget.com/collections/quickstop-anchor-systems/products/quickstop-adjustaflex-y-plate-anchor-system
