Super User flyfisher Posted January 15, 2022 Super User Posted January 15, 2022 Great looking kayak. My dad is looking at the longe version for rivers and my one big question that I have yet to find anywhere is what happens if you hit something while under power. I currently have a rear mounted Newport Vessels NK180s and if I hit something it just lifts top but I don't know if this boat does the same thing. I think in lakes that kayak would be killer though for sure. Quote

schplurg Posted January 17, 2022 Posted January 17, 2022 Bottom of my Old Town PDL is contoured so that the prop will spin and slip up into the hull regardless of what position it is in underwater when you start to lift it. The website shows a photo of the motor in the up position. Seems to operate similar to my pedal drive. Quote

I've been looking at the 120 and 136 quite a bit, unfortunately all the YouTube videos seem to be from people who have received the kayaks from old town for free so I feel like they're biased. There also isn't very much in terms of feedback on general forums that I've found. How do you find the cockpit room on the 120 when standing, is it enough? Also do you think it's stable enough to frog fish standing? Appreciate your insight. I’ve had my AP120 since October 2020. Used it all last year and I paid full price for it! Ha! I came from a Jackson Cuda and the stability in OT is unbelievable. You can stand, turn around, fish standing sideways, walk to the front and on and on. There’s plenty of room, the storage area behind the seat is huge. I fit my crate, lunch bag and Money Bags of soft plastics. I really got into flipping and pitching last year and standing is a must….zero issues in the kayak! I went with a 100ah lithium battery and I’ve never come close to running out of power. Plus they’re lighter than lead acid. the only downside is the weight but without the battery and motor in it…it’s not bad at all. I load it in the back of my truck with no issues. 2 Quote

Thanks a lot for the feedback! I'm likely pulling the trigger on one next week. I far prefer standing when casting so that's great to hear from you. As mentioned earlier I would also like to frog fish so I hope the stability is up to par for that. Regarding the battery, I've read a few people with 100ah batteries say they've never run out. Wondering if you think that's overkill then? How far are you traveling on max speed to get to your spots? Regarding the weight, I was thinking of grabbing the Yakima showboat and rooftopping. There's a guy on YouTube who shows him loading it and seems reasonable. Quote
Landis Carrier Posted January 20, 2022 Posted January 20, 2022 I’m one of those people who fill up their gas tank at a half tank because I don’t want to run out! I’d rather have more power available than run out. Fishing lakes and running all day from spot to spot and using spot lock I rarely use more than 30-40% of the battery. However if I fish a river and use spot lock frequently to hold me in the current I’ll use more. like I said….I’d rather have more fuel in the tank! I have the Malone Wide Track cart that I use to move it from the shed to my truck. I hand unload and load at the lake or river. In my opinion….you will not be unhappy with this kayak! 1 Quote
Super User FryDog62 Posted January 23, 2022 Author Super User Posted January 23, 2022 Was in a bass tournament today... pretty laid back but fun. Was told I placed 9th out of 27 fishermen - despite not having a gas motor to get from spot to spot. And about 80 degrees warmer than home. I’ll take it? 5 Quote

I have a 100ah Renolgy lithium in my Sportsman 106 and have traveled upwards of 15 miles with a lotta juice left over when I got back. And this isn't in an open, smooth lake but hydrilla invested, stump invested Headwaters Lake in South Florida. Seems the Minn Kota motors on these boats (same 45lb thrust for both boats) is extremely efficient. The 100ah blue tooth Renolgy is very light. Mine weighs about 19lbs. And the added comfort of knowing one can go ALL day without issue is a BIG plus with these powered kayaks....in my opinion. Quote
Super User FryDog62 Posted January 30, 2022 Author Super User Posted January 30, 2022 More fun on the water this week side imaging flats, finding a few post-spawners... Still trying to get my head wrapped around that - where I come from post-spawn isn’t until early June.. 2 Quote
