swohiofishing Posted January 9, 2022 Posted January 9, 2022 I plan on picking up a Daiwa Fuego 2500 and there are two gear ratio options: 6.2 : 1 and 5.3 : 1 What makes more sense on an all purpose rod? Or does it just boil down to preference? Quote
cyclops2 Posted January 9, 2022 Posted January 9, 2022 Not really that much difference to a hungry school of SMB. I like higher ratios. I can always crank slower. 1 1 Quote

It's January, and my local spots are iced in, and encrusted in snow, so I'll play. "I can always crank slower" with the implication of "but not faster" in advocating for faster gear ratios is a public misconception. The slowest most folks can crank is 2 handle revolutions per second. If you are really good you may approach 1.5 RPS, but at that point, you will progressively be advancing the handle in discrete start and stop, choppy increments. And all y'all "I'm a righty but want a leftie BC reel" guys stand by..... And the "get the longer rod" crowd too.... 1 Quote
Super User Team9nine Posted January 9, 2022 Super User Posted January 9, 2022 Just picked up a new Daiwa myself, but different model. Had the same gear ratio options though. For all-around spinning, go with the faster ratio. There is a noticeable difference. Quote

For most of my fishing I use the 6:?:1 ratio, however, I want a 5.?:1 spinning reel hanging from the rod I use for very lightly weighted plastics and hair. oe Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted January 9, 2022 Posted January 9, 2022 Line IPT varies between reels with the same ratio with those having larger diameter rotors/nails taking up more line. 2 Quote
mrpao Posted January 9, 2022 Posted January 9, 2022 I'm probably in the minority, but I prefer lower gear ratio spinning reels. To me the lower gear ratio has less resistance and forces me in fish alittle slower. I feel that I tend to fish too fast and slowing down helps me catch more fish. If given the choice, I'll normally choose the lower gear ratio and smaller reels. A smaller spool also aids in less inches per turn. 2 1 Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted January 9, 2022 Super User Posted January 9, 2022 Like Mike said - different reels with the same gear ratio can have different IPTs. Stating that - it all depends on the main technique I'll be using the reel for...finesse I like a low IPT (my President-25 is 5.2:1 22.4IPT/Avocet RZT-1000 is 5.4:1 22.0IPT) for lipless/squarebills a moderate IPT (Avocet RZT-2000 is 5.4:1 25.0IPT) Quote
swohiofishing Posted January 9, 2022 Author Posted January 9, 2022 Looks like the Fuego is 29.6 or 34.5 IPT for the 2500 size. Quote
Super User MickD Posted January 9, 2022 Super User Posted January 9, 2022 It really doesn't matter. OK, guys, unload on me. Quote
Super User Darren. Posted January 9, 2022 Super User Posted January 9, 2022 Faster. It's my opinion and I'm sticking with it. Quote

This is just my opinion, I'm assuming you know the standard idea ,such as lower durability and twork with higher ratios, but with all that aside, gear ratio for me is really simple, I buy faster because I can always slow down but it's uncomfortable to speed up. Try walking a zara spook on a 6:6:1 reel, than a 7:6:1. Now use that 7:6:1 for a slow technique and it still works fine. Quote
Super User Hammer 4 Posted January 10, 2022 Super User Posted January 10, 2022 I've used both speeds. When I bought my Fuego I opted for the faster ratio. Easier for me to slow down vs speed up. So far, using it for varied lures, it works just fine. Quote
swohiofishing Posted January 10, 2022 Author Posted January 10, 2022 Ha I get the reasoning from both arguments, still not sold either way Quote

The 29 IPT is considered fast for a general purpose casting reel. It’s Your money and choice to make. Tom Quote
