Yazman Posted January 3, 2022 Posted January 3, 2022 I have an XXH Shimano Sojourn Musky 8'6 that doesn't fit in my tiny sedan. I want to cut it in the middle and epoxy in a piece of graphite or carbon stock to make it a 2pc. Is this feasible? Is there a better way? I'm open to suggestions. Thanks. Quote
cyclops2 Posted January 3, 2022 Posted January 3, 2022 I always use a passenger or trunk door. 2 6 1 Quote
garroyo130 Posted January 3, 2022 Posted January 3, 2022 I dont believe it will be quite that easy ... rod butt on the passenger floorboard and tip out the drivers rear window 1 Quote
Yazman Posted January 3, 2022 Author Posted January 3, 2022 The big problem is my fishing spot is where my in-laws live, so my wife always wants to come with the kids to see her parents (which gives me fishing time) and she will not tolerate 1pc rods in the car.... ?. So it's either 2pc or I can't bring it ? Quote
cyclops2 Posted January 3, 2022 Posted January 3, 2022 All electric windows down to fish site ? Rain started. Oh no Mr. Bill. ? 1 Quote
Super User Deleted account Posted January 3, 2022 Super User Posted January 3, 2022 True story, brother rented a convertible sports car on a fishing trip to the Keys a while back, and closed the roof on the rod tube putting it through the rear window. 2 Quote

Delaware Valley Tackle Posted January 4, 2022 Posted January 4, 2022 Your idea will create shear points. You can get actual metal ferrules but I’m not sure you want to tackle that as your first venture into rod building. 1 1 Quote

It would be far easier to find a comparable 2-piece rod. I just looked and Shimano has 2-piece Muskie rods. https://fish.shimano.com/content/fish/northamerica/us/en/homepage/Shimano_Product_Page.P-SKIXX_MUSKIE.html#product_image_2 3 hours ago, Msl819 said: Sounds like you need two rods. One for your house and one for your In-laws! Problem solved. I agree on having two rods, but I am speaking from experience when I say this. A huge NO to leaving a rod. Why? Because you will never ever see that rod again. I’m so dumb that I did it twice. And twice, the rods got lost. The first time I left an 8’6” rod and MIL’s house in Mexico. No one knows what happened to it. The second time, I was forced leave a rod because to Mexico you can bring a rod as a carry on. However, you CANNOT bring it with you as a carry on back to the US. So I handed it to a relative who said they’d keep an eye on it. One can only guess what happened. So I say this tongue and cheek but there is an underlying truth. No one will care for or about your rods like you would. Comma, exclamation point and period, lol. Getting a 2-piece rod is the most practical solution. You just need to figure out how much you’re willing to spend. ? 1 Quote
Cigarguy Posted January 4, 2022 Posted January 4, 2022 Can't believe you are passing up a golden opportunity to get a new rod. 2 3 Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted January 4, 2022 Super User Posted January 4, 2022 Ship the rod to your MIL's. There is a good chance it will be in 2 pieces when it arrives. Problem solved. 1 5 1 Quote
Deephaven Posted January 4, 2022 Posted January 4, 2022 Rod building shop can do it easy. Not a super easy task for your first wrap though. 1 Quote
Yazman Posted January 4, 2022 Author Posted January 4, 2022 Yeah my MIL despises me and has lost other things we've shipped to her house or left behind. I'd love to get another rod, but my wife is losing her patience with my addiction LOL. I may just have to see if anyone local will make it a 2pc or do some horse trading for a 2pc. I appreciate all the advice! I probably won't attempt it myself; I even had a dream last night where I attempted to make a ferrule 2pc and it failed miserably ? Quote

You can resist me for awhile, but we both know you will buy another rod, and a new reel for it. Why torture yourself? Just go ahead and buy it. You know you want to. 4 Quote

The bait monkey has made me a believer in the supernatural. I've dropped like $1,000 the last few months in fishing gear, and I have 2 kids and make $12/hr ?. No debt and everyone is fed though. 3 Quote
Super User FishTank Posted January 4, 2022 Super User Posted January 4, 2022 I hate to say it but to have someone split the rod and finish it will probably cost more than the rod itself. I would just buy a new one that fits your needs. 1 Quote
Super User bulldog1935 Posted January 4, 2022 Super User Posted January 4, 2022 While adding spigot ferrules to glass fly rod blanks is a fairly common choice, they're not XXH musky rods. I would go the external rod holder route - suction mounts on the outside of your vehicle. https://www.flyrodcarrier.com/rodmounts-fly-fishing-rod-racks/ 1 Quote

The fishing is so bad in the area where I now live that I quit fishing for 23 years. I've purchased a fair amount of gear over the past 12 years since I got back into fishing. Mainly to keep my interest up. Otherwise I'd have quit again. But it reached the point over the past 3-4 years where even that wasn't enough to keep me going out. I have reels that haven't been spooled with line. Rods that haven't had a reel mounted on them. Several (of both) that have only been used once. I needed something to get my juices flowing again. So I thought I'd get into fly fishing...mainly for panfish. Actual time on water will have to wait a few months as I can't stand the cold anymore. The Bait Monkey pities no one. I've managed to spend about twice that much on fly rods, reels, lines, leaders, and flies. All while off for 6 months because of a couple operations. Bills have been paid, and no ones gone hungry, but my bank account has been hit hard. State only paid me for 2 of the 6 months I was off work. Doesn't seem right for 2 brain operations. but I'm back to work full time now. Luckily I make a little more than $12/hr. 2 Quote

I put my 7.2 pole complete with reel, line and lure between us with reel end in the back speaker panel and rod coming between us and tip laying on the top of dash. Wife has no problem. Also the rod sittin that way i can hang my wet fishing gloves or socks over the rod and they will dry out real quick before our next fishing spot. 1 Quote
Yazman Posted January 10, 2022 Author Posted January 10, 2022 T-Billy's words were prophetic; I ended up buying a 2pd Tackle Industries 9' Musky rod! My options were: $25 Berkley Big Game - floppy and cheap $20-40ish? - Have someone add a ferrule to my Sojurn $100 BPS Predator - only rated up to 4oz (my baits are 5-8) $175 TI 9' Musky $400 Shimano Sixx - expensive TI was really cool when I emailed them, so I went with their XH 2-8oz rod. Super stoked! Bait monkey strikes again. 1 Quote
