larrymarketfishing Posted December 30, 2021 Posted December 30, 2021 Hello all. Just picked up a REVOMGX2-HS (8.0:1 gear ratio) from Bass Pro Shops. Didn’t have any specific technique in mind initially for this reel, but wondering for anyone that might have it, how it would do for frogging? It’s got a shallower spool (80yd/50lb braid) than my REVO SX and 7 lbs less drag. Thanks! Quote
DomQ Posted December 30, 2021 Posted December 30, 2021 Pitching and flippin maybe? What the drag on it? Quote

Super User Hammer 4 Posted December 30, 2021 Super User Posted December 30, 2021 Don't see why that reel wouldn't work for froggin. After all, you usually don't need to bomb the bait way out there. As for flippin & pitchin, unless your fishing Really Heavy cover, it will work for those also. In flippin, you don't cast anyway. 1 Quote
rtwvumtneer6 Posted December 30, 2021 Posted December 30, 2021 I'm seeing 120/12 for the spool capacity. 50# braid diameter is typically equivalent to 12# mono... Maybe I'm looking at the wrong specs? Flippin/pitching, frogs and buzzbaits would all fit the bill. 1 Quote
newapti5 Posted December 30, 2021 Posted December 30, 2021 MGX's is specifically designed for casting light lures. Although it's totally doable to use it for frogs and pitching/flipping, it'll be a waste of talent IMO. A STX would be perfect for that task. 1 Quote
jtesch Posted December 30, 2021 Posted December 30, 2021 I have a couple of these reels. Good all purpose up to 3/4 oz or so. It’s made as a light lure reel and is quite good in that duty. Treat it a little gently as they can get banged up easily. Take a little time getting used to the cast control. I have to adjust mine more than other reels Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted December 30, 2021 Super User Posted December 30, 2021 It hasn't been that long ago that a 17 lb. drag was unheard of for low profile baitcast reels intended for bass. If worse comes to worse, use your thumb for extra stopping power. As already stated, the MGX is slanted towards finesse. Review of the original. http://tackletour.com/reviewabumgxshs.html But so was the Daiwa Pixy, yet many used it for other applications with no problem...including for frogs. The original MGX is spec'ed for 65 yards of 50# Sufix per the above review. As rtwvumtneer6 stated TW lists 120/12 for the new reel. 1 Quote
Super User JustJames Posted December 30, 2021 Super User Posted December 30, 2021 Drag capacity is one thing but more important that I won’t use MGX2 for frog is aluminum main gear. 1 Quote
