I have been reading on here and you all make incredible things!   I mess with tackle and modify things, but I am going to dive more into hair and tying bass jigs.  I have done some (horrible, quick, uneducated) stuff, but want to try a little more.
I really like the concept of the big old Chicken jig by Outcast tackle.  They say it is made with synthetic fur.  Does anyone have any idea what that is and where the best place to find it would be?
Thanks in advance.  I am going to keep reading here.  This is really fun to check out.

Means craft fur. Cabeles and basspro as well as borlows, lure parts online all carry it. I would definitely want to know the quality of the product on that one just because its going to be important the craft fur is long for that pattern

Chickens have feathers not hair……… hehe

But chicken feathers are very popular in fly tying, mostly the hackle feathers (neck)

That has been my problem in looking for the synthetic fur they are using.  I can’t find very long synthetic fur.  I looked at Lure Parts Online and they have some interesting synthetic materials.  I just wish I knew closer to what those look and feel like without having to order all of them.  Whatever they (Outcast) use, they say it really slows down the fall rate.  They use 3/4 oz jigs in not very deep water for them.  I think the only thing that is really “chicken” in the two long feathers that flow longer on the jig.  Thanks for answering so quickly!

I’m not sure what jig you’re referring to but reading the replies, I guess it’s craft hair. It usually comes is tufts longer than a jig, unless of course it’s a preacher jig. What they send you will cover up your hand. Hobby lobby might even have craft hair, you’d be surprised what all they have that works for lure making. Sometimes they have the exact same stuff as a fly shop for about 200% less money

Thanks TnRiver46!  I was thinking about stopping in there with my wife and daughters next time they go.  I can at least see what the product looks like.  If you want to see what the chicken jig is, google Seth Feider chicken jig.  There are a couple videos of them fishing it.  They have been very successful with it in Minnesota where I live.   They charge over $15 for them.  I know I can make them a lot cheaper.  They sell them at Tackle Warehouse.  Outcast Tackle Chicken hair jig.

Thanks for the info.  I see you are a Global Moderator, Congrats!!  I think that is new??

well the first thing I looked up called it a form of preacher jig so you might need some longer craft hair than what I typically get

congrats again!  This forum is amazing   I am going to continue my search for unique synthetic fiber that is long enough.  I want to have something similar that is unique to show them something different with all this new found fishing pressure.  I have to wait 4 months however...............uggh

Look at Wapsi big fly fiber or a product called EP fiber. Both are slightly different than craft fur and come in longer lengths.

Yeah I didn’t realize how big that jig was until the OP told me to look it up

That's a lot of hair past the hook. Wonder if missed fish on short strikes is an issue? Looks like a trailer hook would be a plus.

I'm don't think it's craft fur.  Definitely artificial though.  I also can't figure out how the bulk of the material slows a 1/2 oz or 3/4 oz jig down.  It looks like it does have some bucktail in it.  The shorter hairs behind the jig head.  An interesting looking Crystal Flash.  I like to find that.  Some streamer hackle, though I can't tell how many.  Maybe two, possibly four.  I've got a bunch of artificial hairs. Some I've never used, mainly because they bulk up like that.  It's not what I look for when I'm tying a bait fish pattern.  I'll take a look and maybe I can give you a name for it.  I can't believe they want $15 for it.  Maybe it's the fancy jig head.

I buy all my hair jig materials from Bob Marriotts Fishing, they sell online, decent prices and have experts to help you find exactly what you need. If Bob Marriotts doesn't have it, it doesn’t exist.

It has been an interesting search so far.   I think I am going to end up buying a bunch of different materials and trying them out.  Maybe I will find something unique that works just as well. On the videos I have watched, Feider and the others talked about a very slow fall because of the bulk from the material.  The description says it is synthetic, just not sure what.

Thanks for helping me look!!

From the video I watched on the chicken jig and I believe I know what it might be. I believe they are using a synthetic material called strung fuzzy fiber.  Hareline Strung Fuzzy Fiber | J. Stockard Fly Fishing (jsflyfishing.com)       I don't think it is made with EP fibers because the cost alone isn't really good when you consider how much material is on 1 jig.  EP fibers are like double the cost of strung fuzzy fiber and there is a lot of material on 1 jig.

I think you're right.  At least it appears to me that the Fuzzy Fiber will work.  Craft fur that I have seen is not long enough for the fly I saw on the video.  And the EP fibers I've worked with don't seem to be soft enough to do what this jig is doing.

Thanks Fellas!!!!   This is exactly what I wanted to hear.  I have about 7 different kinds of hair in my cart at Lurenet and this is one of them.  I know most of them aren't long enough, but it doesn't say how long in the descriptions.  I will for sure give this a try.  Is jsflyfishing.com the best or is Lurenet ok as well?

Thanks again.  You guys know your stuff!!!

I'm not familiar with Lurenet, but Jsflyfishing.com is a good company.  I also buy a lot from Lurepartsonline.com.  Not all companies have all products,so shopping at a couple is often necessary to get all I want.  And some have certain products that seem better than others, like some feathers, other natural stuff.  Almost everything by "Hareline" is good stuff, by the way.

I just checked the Lurenet site and it appears more of a lure shop than a tacklemaking shop.  I didn't see the kinds of stuff we are discussing there.  Maybe I'm missing something, but. . .

Darn it, my fault.  I meant to say lurepartsonline.  Mid-week idiot move.  Thanks for all the info!!!
