I am looking for a new spinning reel in the $100 or so range and split between the Fenwick HMG and Dobyns Fury. Any opinons around the two which might help choose one over the other?

Never used a Fury.  Like my HMGs.  Dobyns is a more popular brand so I feel reasonably certain you will get more votes for the Fury.  TBH I have no desire to try a Fury.

Tried both, HMG was stouter than rated, Fury was lighter than rated. Personally liked the HMG better.

Older HMGs are great sticks, the newer ones are ok. I like the Fury BCs, but the spinning ones just don't feel right to me. YMMV.

HMG all day long. Blanks are extremely reliable and hold up well.

Ha I ended up going with a Fury 703

I've said it many times before....go with what interests you the most.  You did.  Regardless of the responses.  Most likely you will be glad you did.

Ex.  White rods may be great, but I hate white rods.  I'm satisfied with whichever black one I bought.

I found it on sale for $90 so I pulled the trigger. I can see a HMG medium light in my future though. This hobby is starting to get expensive.

Tell me about it!!!!  I got back into fishing almost 13 years ago.  The money I've spent on it since then....whew.  Would make a decent down payment on a new car.
