I feel the whole discussion of “balance” is one of if not the most over blown beat to death discussions in rod building and bass fishing in general. You take a light, crisp blank, layout a guide train with the smallest, lightest and least guides then place the seat to have a handle length that will supply some leverage braced on the forearm but not so long as to snag pockets or poke you in the ribs and you’ll have a good performance rod that’s a pleasure to fish.

I agree.  I think people enjoy balancing a rod and reel with no bait horizontally on their finger.  It’s a way to compare one combo to another even if it’s irrelevant to actually using a rod for fishing.

I don’t disagree and I personally think it’s overblown as well.  I don’t make adjustments to my rods but who am I to judge if someone does.  That wasn’t the point of the discussion.  It was someone telling everyone else who posted that they were wrong when in fact it was the accuser that was wrong.

 

Edit:  I chose to correct the record…maybe that was my error.  I never gave an opinion as they don’t typically go over well here.  FWIW, he disagreed with you as well…you let it go, I didn’t.  It’s not just members who visit this site, it’s visitors as well.  Opinions are opinions but I think it serves the greater community to correct factual errors.

If the rod with no reel balances 8 inch's past the handle that would be it's balance point without the reel. The further it goes outward the more imbalanced it will feel when used. When you balance a rod you add weight to the butt to get it to balance where you hold it. The only variable is where you hold it. I submit that most guys palm a baitcaster which would put that in the center of the reel seat. I am not talking about spinning rods here. If you balance a baitcast rod to the center of the reel seat with no reel on it then it doesn't matter how much the reel weighs. If you balance it forward or backward because of preference then yes it would matter. I personally have stopped balancing my rods and have gone to Dobyns rods because they are light and balance close enough to the reel seat that I am satisfied. There is no way I would ever spend the money that the nrx costs with an 8 inch balance point. I'm done.

I fire up the Lee pot and pour enough lead in them to achieve the balance I want. Usually it's right about the first internal ring in the foot. Dirt cheap, easy, clean looking, and work perfectly.

 Moving bait rods I prefer to be a bit tip heavy. No right or wrong, just personal preference.
