JoeDeal55 Posted December 19, 2021 Posted December 19, 2021 Laying in bed last night talking to my lovely wife about my passion for fishing. (She generally supports my interest in fishing. Somedays she will go with me but most of the time lets me go solo.) I mentioned that I would like to buy another rod and reel and some more tackle before spring. She was so confused! She said "You have 2 poles and a whole tacklebag already, why do you need more?" Then I proceed to spend almost an hour trying to explain rod power and action, their differences, and which ones to use for specific techniques. That conversation got me nowhere. So, then I thought of a decent analogy that she might comprehend. (She has thousands of $$ in makeup/cosmetic products) I pointed out that she has like 50 different makeup brushes. All different shapes and angles and sizes. I said, "Imagine if you only had 2 brushes to do your entire face." She goes, "That makes sense, I'm picking up what your putting down." I did it boys! I got my wife on board with me spending money every year on fishing gear with one stupid little analogy! Now the fun begins! 13 2 11 Quote
gunsinger Posted December 19, 2021 Posted December 19, 2021 I’ve had the same conversation about guns. Unfortunately, I didn’t have quite the success you did.  ? 4 7 Quote
padlin Posted December 19, 2021 Posted December 19, 2021 Good job coming up with the makeup brushes  I can squeak by without comment if I buy just a single item, like that high priced reel I wanted. Then late that year, or maybe the next, get the rod I wanted to go with the reel. If I try doing this with the boat I just bought I won't get it in the water till 2024 1 Quote
Super User T-Billy Posted December 19, 2021 Super User Posted December 19, 2021 A guy's shopping with his wife. After watching her put over $50 worth of makeup in the cart, he asks her why she needs all that stuff. She answers, why to look pretty for you sweetheart. The man replies, a 12 pack will accomplish the same thing for only $10. 6 17 2 Quote
Aaron_H Posted December 19, 2021 Posted December 19, 2021 You showed her that you understand something she cares about enough to help her make sense of something you care about. Fellas take note, communication is paramount. ? Â Â 4 2 Quote
Super User MickD Posted December 19, 2021 Super User Posted December 19, 2021 Other possibillities to use are shoes and purses. Each has its specific value based on the technique/look one is trying to accomplish.  5 Quote
FishinBuck07 Posted December 19, 2021 Posted December 19, 2021 Never had to explain it to my wife, thank God! She always says bills are paid and I work hard for my money, then go for it! 6 Quote
Junk Fisherman Posted December 20, 2021 Posted December 20, 2021 My wife gets it too. My wedding gift from her was a Daiwa Zillion. She usually tells me to buy things when I often wait for a sale or say I don't really need it. My wife has her shoes and sweaters and I don't ask her about those.  5 Quote

Super User king fisher Posted December 20, 2021 Super User Posted December 20, 2021 That logic wont fly at my house. The next question my wife would ask. Can she throw all of her make up in to the lake then go buy all new because she lost it? She would also point out that she doesn't have a huge box of make up that she doesn't use but keeps for sentimental purposes.  Might also mention. People compliment her on the way she looks made up. They only laugh at me and my fishing gear. I don't even keep the fish to eat, what difference can a new rod an reel make. I once told her at least I don't have a gambling problem.  She informed me talking like that was a big gamble.      6 Quote
Super User ATA Posted December 20, 2021 Super User Posted December 20, 2021 I've done the same conversation, except she told me to leave everything at her parents and every summer we meet we can use them and het new ones. guess what? we never visit her parents. Maybe its not good to say but thank god we are divorced from 2015 and I back to fishing after 3.5 year hiccup ? 2 Quote
Super User JustJames Posted December 20, 2021 Super User Posted December 20, 2021 Last time I used this analogy, she sent me straight to the dog house. Now I just buy first then ask for forgiveness. 2 Quote

Super User Bird Posted December 20, 2021 Super User Posted December 20, 2021 Hmmm, trying to wrap my head around this thread. My wife doesn't even know If I bought a new boat unless I take her fishing and she always asks......" when did you get this boat " ? Lol I totally get the respect thing but have never once asked the wife if I could buy something and she does the same. It's worked for 36 years.  5 Quote
CrashVector Posted December 20, 2021 Posted December 20, 2021 I must be engaged to the one woman on the planet whose entire makeup kit fits in a bag the size of a fanny pack, so I can't use this technique as much as I'd love to ?  Been sitting here reading it 50 times going "What can I replace make up brushes with that she actually has lots of and that costs tons of money? Contact lenses? No...um...she's got 5 pairs of shoes, so that's out too...uh...I'll just bribe her with cookies again.". ??? 4 Quote

Mascara and lip gloss - that's all she uses.  Luckily, she understands my passion, so lets me get what I have the money for and doesn't even ask how many rigs or how much tackle I have...though compared to some here, I've got a pittance. 1 Quote

She would also point out that she doesn't have a huge box of make up that she doesn't use but keeps for sentimental purposes. That's correct, they throw it in an old expensive purse they never use that doesn't match any of the out of date shoes she has stashed away, then buy all new stuff when we're not looking.  People compliment her on the way she looks made up I look like a male model with no make up at all, especially when I'm happy, and look how happy I am with that fish, hon! Dang I'm hot!  It's good to be divorced! 4 Quote
Super User Catt Posted December 20, 2021 Super User Posted December 20, 2021 I've been married 36 years but i've known Carolann for 62 years.  30 years ago we came to an understanding for our anniversary  I don't buy her jewelry & she doesn't buy me fishing tackle. Needless to say one diamond ring covers my tackle for awhile. 6 Quote
Super User DitchPanda Posted December 20, 2021 Super User Posted December 20, 2021 Just do what I do..if she gives you a hard time tell her you make more money than her so you can do what you want...........ok obviously I'm just messing around. Im extremely fortunate in that my lady is not only sweet and beautiful she is also laid back and low maintenance. She never gives me crap about my gear. 1 1 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted December 20, 2021 Global Moderator Posted December 20, 2021 I buy what I want as long as it's either my fun money from making baits/guiding/working OT or as long as it's within budget, and my wife does the same. We're both adults who deserve our own hobbies and interest and we don't question each other's purchases to support them. Been working well for over a decade now. 10 Quote

Been working well for over a decade now. This is the correct answer. My wife and I are both in our 50's and responsible adults. If I want something and it fits my budget, I buy it. She has the same freedom. Larger purchases require discussion but not justification.  5 1 Quote
Super User T-Billy Posted December 20, 2021 Super User Posted December 20, 2021 I married a low maintenance woman who loves to fish. I buy what I want, she does the same. It's never an issue. The only time we argue over money is when I try to pay for something that she feels she should pay for. 1 Quote
cyclops2 Posted December 20, 2021 Posted December 20, 2021 My wife keeps increasing the amount of money I SHOULD be spending on anything. So she can spend more.   Have I been conned ?  2 Quote
DaubsNU1 Posted December 20, 2021 Posted December 20, 2021 My wife and I (second marriage for both), have separate bank accounts. We each have our share of the monthly bill responsibilities...what is left over can be spent however we want. Note: we have no payments / loans other than our mortgage...which should be paid off shortly before I retire. If we can't pay cash, we don't get it.  Large purchases are talked about, and planned out. She wanted to get a 5th wheel and explore/camp...and had the $$ in her budget...researched and found used for a good deal. Paid cash. We pulled that 5th wheel to Montana this summer...brother and I pulled to deer hunt in November.  New fishing rod-and-reel wouldn't even be a blip on her radar...but if I brought home a new boat, well, that would be a problem : )  My brother's wife holds a tight rein over their finances and bank accounts. He works his ass off in the summers (the are both teachers) and she takes the summers off. Honestly, it ticks me off that she barks when he spends even a little $$ on new lures...and could never bring home a new rod/reel.  So of course, I rib her whenever I can about giving brother some grace. She's a good wife, and good mom to their children...and good Aunt to my kiddos.  Enough about that...in all, life is good! Good luck picking out a new rod-reel combo!! Quote
