With the current sale on Dobyns rods, I was thinking to load up on rods for a variety of different techniques.  Currently I have two Megabass rods - a Orochi XX Whipsnake, and a Orochi XX Perfect Pitch.  I really like both of these rods.  I also have a couple Daiwa Ardito travel rods, (1, 7'6" spinning, 1, 7"casting), that I purchased because of recent traveling requirements.

I was thinking to load up on some Dobyns Champion XP rods, to fill the many gaps of rods that I am missing for a variety of techniques.  It would be great if you guys could send me down the right path to load up on a bunch of these rods to fill the gap.  I really appreciate all your help.  Can't wait to buy a gift card from tw, and then take advantage of the current sales on Dobyns rods.  Thanks in advance.

Not familiar with the Champ XP series but I know a lot of folks love the 744c as an all rounder. Throw in a 733c and save a little money by picking up a Fury 705cb for cranks and you should be set. I love my Kaden and Furys. Might have to capitalize on the sale too lol. Good luck with whatever you get!

If you are looking for technique specific, can you provide the "gaps" you're referring to?

The 734 will do a lot.

With the sales going on I would consider the Extreme HP series, the sensitivity is very good. I use the DX743 C FH for weightless baits, light weight Texas rigs & light spinner baits.  The DX 744 C FH is a excellent all around rod. The DX 745 C FH  I use for toads & Carolina rigs, jigs. I fish these rods  99% of the time for weightless & bottom fishing because of the sensitivity. For moving baits I use the Champion XP series most of the time for it saves a few bucks & the fish tend to hit them harder. I will say I am very impresses with Extreme HP series. I have & used The Champion XP series For several years & did fine. A couple of years ago  ago I got into the position where I could belly up to the bar & pick up a few of the Extreme HP series So when I have some extra cash I put it away & wait for a sale & pick a HP. I feel you would be happy with either of these series.

I bought a 7' Champ XP 705 (mag heavy, 1/2 - 2 oz) this time last year and used it for frogging this year. No complaints at all. I'm a kayak/bank guy, so I like shorter rods.

I know the Sierra series isn't on sale this time around, but I really like my 683c paired up with an MGL-style reel. I use it for ~3.5" paddletails, squarebills, maybe even a 3/8oz chatterbait. I have a 684c as well that I also like, but I wish I had gone with a longer rod for that one.

I have a Fury 705CB that I'm not all that fond of, but I don't do a lot of crankbait fishing. I thought I could switch it over to crankbait duty but I think I prefer a faster action for that technique (I actually use the Sierra 684).

If I could only use one rod it would be the XP734C. I throw chatterbaits, spinnerbaits, weightless flukes, T-rigs, jigs……… If you dig a little, you’ll find a “general” consensus that whether it’s the Fury, Sierra, or Champ XP series, the 734 is the most popular “all-around.”

I have 8 Dobyns rods and my next rods will be 2 more Dobyns Champ XP 734s.

I agree that the XP 734 is one of the most universal rods I've ever fished.  My 2 complaints, and they're very minor, is that its a bit too soft to move/shake/finesse a standard 1/2oz jig through the dense weeds and sensitivity is good, not great.  All open hook moving baits and trebles are pleasure to fish with, definitely recommend.

Hey guys, so I picked up a Dobyns Champ XP 734 and a 736 Glass.  I am looking to add to more Dobyns Rods before the sales are over.  I still need a crank bait rod, and do not want to go over 7' 4", and also would like to pick up another rod, but not sure what one.

What two rods would you guys recommend?

For cranks - 705CBMF

and a 703C or 733C for lighter stuff - wacky, weighless plastics, etc.

I have two:

DX 702SF almost single-handedly turned me from a dropshot hater to a DS lover.  Nearly perfect for what I needed.  I just didn't know I needed it when I bought it.  I thought I was buying a light shakey/tube rod.

DX 744 is a very good jig/trig rod, but it is a great 1/2 oz spinnerbait rod.

**Never mind....sorry.  I read DC, but it became DX in my head.  I don't have a DC

Anybody else have any thoughts on getting 2 more Dobyns Rods before the sales are over?  Trying to figure this all out.  Just got back into Bass fishing at the and of last year, after many years of not fishing.  Still waiting on delivery of the 2 Dobyns rods below.

Currently have:

Dobyns Champ DC 736CB GLASS XP

The Whipsnake will handle light spinning finesse. I would add a 3 power medium for heavier spinning applications. Champ 703, 733, or 763.........whatever length you're comfortable with. If your never vertical dropping, I personally would go with a 733 or 736....or if you want a 7' for target cast spinning and a longer 1 for distance. Hope my opinions/text communication makes sense.

I would get a 704cb or 705cb for jerkbaits/cranks.   From there I would look at either a 703c ( which is more moderate than the 733, I use for weightless flukes, small cranks, small t rigs, Shakey heads.) The other would be the 735c, which really is a extra fast tip for dobyns.  It works amazing as a frog rod and larger weight Texas rigs, it gets to the backbone quick.

Basics of Dobyns Rods for me come as follows:

Fury 705cb most popular rod Dobyns sales. CB stands for Crankbait. This rod is great for most cranking situations. I like a squarebill on it. It’s great on jerkbaits and poppers. Dobyns does make a Glass rod in the Champion series.

702SF spinning rod...perfect for neds, nekos, light tubes and dropshots. I use the Fury series and it's a great rod.

733C This is my senko rod. Heavy finesse, tubes, shaky heads. It’s great for Spooks and topwater. Can't go wrong with any series here.

734C I throw my bladed moving baits on it. This is the most versatile rod Dobyns makes. If you want a softer tip the Sierra is the deal. If you want a faster tip Champion or Kaden...or dare I say the Extreme.

744C Champion I would recommend this rod for Texas Rigs and Jigs. It's technically a 5 power.

735C Frogs, jigs...I don't need sensitive rods for frogging. I think the Fury wins here.

These are the basics. Tacklewarehouse.com is having a sale and you can make out like a bandit with some of these deals on Furys, Champions and Kaden.

You're going to love the 736CB Glass for Chatterbaits.

I recommend the 743c Extreme for Senkos.

I second the Champion 704CB for jerkbaits. The DC 704 CB really excels in keeping those trebles from getting unbuttoned and has a nice amount of backbone to keep leverage on the fish at the same time.

I stumbled across this thread searching for something else, but the OrochiXX Perfect Pitch is one of the best junk fishing rods in it's class. Then I see you have 734C, you essentially have 2 junk fishing rods, with the Orochi being the better rod. You just can't mistake the quality of a JDM rod. To me the obvious choice is to sell the 734C. I think you should consider another spinning rod. The Whipsnake is a great light finesse rod, probably the best at Zoom Finesse Worm Shakyheads in 1/4oz and Ned Rigs. The OrochiXX Shakyhead is an awesome rod for heavier finesse applications. The one two punch. Or you can look into getting a jerkbait/popper rod 683cb Champion XP.

I think you are set unless you feel like you need to add to your arsenal. I used to have 20 rods and I consolidated down to 7. (2) spinning rods Levante Whipsnake and Shakyhead, (1) moving bait rod Diablo Spec R chatterbaits, spinnerbaits and squarebills, (1) junk fishing pond hopper rod Levante Perfect Pitch, (1) Champion DX 705c Jig Worm Rod, (1) Frog rod Fury 735c, (1) Jerkbait/Popper rod Levante Jerkbait Special.

At the end of the day I find myself using my Whipsnake and Perfect Pitch more often. Unless you have a boat there is no need to have a locker full of rods. Find about 5 to 7 that work for you. I compete in kayaks and my kayak can only fit 4 rods. Something to think about.

Gary Dobyns the owner of Dobyns Rods was once located in NorCal. Before he was a rod company Gary was a top tournament angler. There isn’t anyone like Gary in the bass fishing. Gary has gone out of his way and taught more anglers how to drive a bass boat, the correct way to position the boat and cast bass tackle then Gary a selfless sharing man.

The Dobyns moved the company to Texas but Gary hasn’t change, maybe a little older but still the kind sharing man he is! Questions about Gary’s rods just ask him!
