Looking to pickup some Dobyns Rods to use for Crankbaits.  Never used Dobyns rods before, and I was wondering what models are best for crankbaits?

I was also wondering if I should get Champion XP, Sierra, Kaden or the Fury line.  Hoping you guys can give me your thoughts?

If you like longer rods the 765 is an excellent all around crankbait rod and the same goes for the 806 for deep cranks. I have the Champion XP's and they're on sale right now at TW (plus an additional 10% off if you buy a gift card first and then purchase the rod after you get the codes).

I use a Champion XP DC 705CB full handle. It is a excellent crank bait rod. I suggest that you call or e-mail Dobyns rods they are very helpful. E-mail info@dobynsrods.com, phone 903 919 8028.

I love the Champion CB graphite rods for crankbaits, they are light, sensitive and have just the right amount of give to keep fish from getting unbuttoned. My 2 favorites are the 764cb and 805cb.

Well seeing as the Fury 705CB is designed for lighter crankbaits (up to 3/4oz although 5/8oz is much more ideal imo) and the Sierra doesn't have any dedicated cranking rods (although the 703C or 733C make fantastic square bill rods, especially in grass), you will have to move up to the Kaden or Champion XP.

The KD 735CB should make a pretty good all-purpose cranking rod as would the DC 735CB glass. If you prefer a longer rod you could go with the DC 765CB or the DC 804CB if you like them real long, but to me the 8 foot rods are more specialty deep diver rods and I would be more inclined to go with the DC 805CB. Models with glass options are acceptable if you like fiberglass rods.

EDIT: So @MN Fisher pointed out the 705CB is actually rated to 1oz, although it kind of feels like 3/4oz would be the max. So the  DC 765CB (glass or not) would probably be the way to go for an all purpose rod.

Ummm...Dean...the Fury is rated to 1oz actually...I've tossed 3/4oz cranks on mine without an issue...through you are correct that 5/8 is the sweet-spot.

It comes down to the “crank bait” diving lures used.

Larger size up 3/4- 1 1/2 oz deep divers a long rod helps a lot to keep the lure in the depth zone longer the Champ 806CB.

Medium size 1/2 -1 oz deep and medium divers the Champ 805CB.

Tom

PS, these are 8’ long rods!

Hey George,  if you can provide the baits you want to fish, we and or I can most likely be model specific. This can help get you dialed in .

Oh nevermind you are right. It feels like it's a 3/4oz. I've used it for 3/4, but I'd be hesitant with 1oz, it loads up quick with 3/4oz.

Hey Guys, Thanks for your thoughts.  First off I think the Champion XP with the discount is probably the sweet spot for the bang for your buck.

I am thinking that for the big deep divers 6XD plus to 10 XD's, I am leaning towards the Champion XP 805CB, however I am hesitant because it is an 8' rod.

I am still not sure what rod to get for the smaller baits smaller than 6XD, 704 CB, 705CB, 734CB, 735CB, 764CB, 765CB?  So many choices?

I am also interested in other rods for the smaller cranks that I may have not listed.  Not opposed to getting 3 rods for cranking.
