Those painful pet peeves!

So how about a thread of those painful pet peeves. You know, those fishing related things that make you go ? and ?‍♂️. Here are three of mine and they are YouTube related.   1. When anglers mix up a rod's "power" with it's "action" and vice versa. I don't know how many times I've heard YouTubers (even professional anglers and veteran YouTubers) describe a rod's power as  the "action". I can live with that. But it's just a bit of a head scratcher.    2. MTB infomercials on soooooo many YouTube channels. If I'm in a cranky mood and I hear at the beginning of a video "sponsored by mystery tackle box"  I turn it off. Stop already. It's like a bad psychology experiment. How much can an angler stand? I think Karl owns YouTube. ?   3.  And related ... The Googan Squad. I think I would rather take the Brady bunch. And that's not saying much!   And yours?

Complainers are mine.  Just kidding, I complain a bit about things, mostly bad driving or people not holding themselves accountable.

People taking accountability for their actions is a thing of the past in most circumstances.

I've been in that boat a few times . I dont understand it . I'll change in a heartbeat .

I would like to see bass anglers , pros alike , agree to definitions about  structure and cover . They're interchangeable to  a lot of anglers making it confusing to noobs .

Well when you live in an "entitled" culture where everything is supposed to be handed to you, then you can always blame someone else when things don't go your way.

Ouch. I better be careful not to start a sentence with "in my day"  or " back when I was a boy" or " I used to walk 5 mi to get to school ... barefoot". ?

I think it's the same as it's always been, it's just way more visible these days.  Luckily, I work in an environment where we all hold each other accountable via total transparency in what we're working on.  It's a true collaborative team win or failure, whichever the outcome.  We don't waste time with blame when we fail, but spend lots of effort to figure out how to avoid repeating the mistake.  Many of the younger people straight out of college are great at this. I think what we're seeing is more visibility to the breakdowns in accountability through technology like the internet, mobile devices, constant data and feedback in our faces.  It's hard to hide from that.  That said, people that don't do what they say they're going to do, or don't provide a reasonable explanation and a path forward to resolve the situation are still y peeve.

People not cleaning up after themselves.  Specifically related to fishing/outdoor activities, the biggest issue is trash, old fishing line, etc.

Ice fisherman are easily the worst demographic when it comes to this problem.  They park their permanent ice shacks in one spot for weeks on end and the area around it becomes a land fill.

You are right about the fishing line and such. Terrible. What does it take to bring a small garbage bag with you and pick up your trash?

Well if everyone simply picked up after themselves there wouldn't be an issue.  That's the way I was raised, to clean up after myself.  Leave the location as you found it.

You should see some of the lakes here during ice fishing season.  Trash, empty beer cans, human/pet feces, empty propane tanks, fish guts...its just shocking what people will leave on the ice.

Right now, it’s working and not fishing. Not much that’s more peevish than that.

- trash/cigarette butts/fishing line/used plastics left on the ground or in the water

- puddles of spit at the ramps, docks, walkways

- people seeing me catch fish so they creep up and fish right next to me

- people letting their dog jump and splash around in the water near me while I'm fishing

- people letting their kids come up to me and pester me by touching my gear, asking if they can "try", and getting in the way of casting

- "catch anything?"

- just humans

Those are all beautiful. Being a bank angler, I can relate to the dog splashing scenario. Dog splashing. Bye-bye fish!

When the guy in the back of the boat:

1. Keeps casting over your line.

2. Keeps casting (in opposite direction were moving) and getting hung up.

3. Keeps casting into the trees.

When you make a perfect cast but you backlash. It makes me soooooo mad. But again, the backlash is user error

Ouch. I hope I'm never that guy in the back of the boat!

That's why many switch to spinning gear!

It is so difficult to accept that you STILL are not catching big fish.   With $ 7,000 worth of electronics.

That feeling never happens to me with my 10 year old $ 70 finder.

In the YouTube world I get annoyed at anglers that set the hook on a fish and immediately start saying “Biggun” on every fish or claim they got a 10 pounder over and over while reeling in a Bass that weighs 3 to 4:pounds at most.

In the real world, my anger is directed at litterbugs and unleashed dog walkers.

My local spots are trashed by fishermen, empty tubs of worms, chicken livers, discarded line and such. Just disgraceful.

The signs on the trails by my local stretch of river say keep your dog on a leash. I have yet to see someone obey that law. I have had dogs jump on me, nose around in my bait and tackle bags, growl and bark at me. I carry some tear gas spray I pray I never have to use as I generally love dogs but I am not getting bit.
