Super User Bird Posted December 13, 2021 Super User Posted December 13, 2021 I hear the term " dime " in many sports articles that I read and it's becoming more popular. Is it just a cliche word that fits anywhere? Examples: Steph Curry was dropping dimes. Lebron James was dishing dimes. Tom Brady threw the perfect dime. Am I just not cool enough to understand? 1 Quote
Super User jbsoonerfan Posted December 13, 2021 Super User Posted December 13, 2021 In basketball it means an assist. Not sure why it would be used in football. 1 Quote

Global Moderator Mike L Posted December 14, 2021 Global Moderator Posted December 14, 2021 A dime is the smallest coin. So In football if a pass is thrown to the smallest open spot that only the receiver can get it, that is called “dropping a dime” or “ putting it on a dime” Don’t know anything about basketball. In fishing it would be like hitting a spot no bigger than a coffee cup. Mike 3 Quote
Super User Jigfishn10 Posted December 14, 2021 Super User Posted December 14, 2021 Back in the day a slider was often called a nickel or dime type slider. When throwing a slider the seems spinning on the ball at a high spin rate that made it look like a red dot to a hitter. A good slider was considered a dime slider because the dot was perceived to be dime size. A so-so one was the size of a nickel and often called a nickel curve. 1 Quote
