schplurg Posted December 12, 2021 Posted December 12, 2021 This is a video of a typical day of bank fishing for me along one of the creeks on the edge of San Jose, CA. I walked and crashed through shrubs and rocks and trails for 5-6 miles looking for bass. I wonder if the creek had dried up recently like some others nearby because it was almost lifeless. But I met several people, had some funny moments and just thought it might be interesting to see. I think an ad might play at the beginning, not sure, but I do not monetize my channel. I think the 1.5 seconds of music wasn't public domain like I thought it was, so Youtube slapped an ad on it. I usually make my own music. I go through a lot to catch a fish, or not, so this is for all the folk who will damage their body and do whatever it takes for love of the game. Check out the deer on the sidewalk. I missed videoing the two bucks right next to the road. 9 Quote
Super User scaleface Posted December 12, 2021 Super User Posted December 12, 2021 I never walked that far to catch a fish . 1 Quote

Hey, there's one thing that we get that boat anglers don't: exercise! Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted December 12, 2021 Super User Posted December 12, 2021 That video could have been one of my bank fishing trips. It's not a complete day for me unless I step in a hole, or trip over a branch. 1 Quote

You never know what you're going to step into or trip over. ? 1 Quote
throttleplate Posted December 12, 2021 Posted December 12, 2021 i get to moving along and dont secure my dangling lure and it either gets wrapped up in bushes, tree branches or around the pole. Also casting around or through branches there is always the cast where you know its 80% chance to get it hung in a tree limb but i just know i can place it in there and i get it hung. Thats when i call myself an idiot, i should have known better. Quote

I usually know where I'm gonna fish but this was a new creek for me. South Bay is terrible now. Ponds and creeks are almost all dry. I pretty much went just to get out of the house. But I like the little adventure of it. I'm gonna concentrate on the new kayak next season though. 1 Quote
fishhugger Posted December 13, 2021 Posted December 13, 2021 that seems so tough.......... why not any of the variety of little ponds within 20 miles of san jose? or maybe 10 miles... the perc ponds? what about fremont...? shinn pond, etc? a nice thing about ponds is you walk around them, and then you're back at your car! a creek, you trudge along it... now you get to trudge........all.........the..........way.....omg....back..................to..............your....................oh man...............................................c............a...............r.... oh man.....................it is so cold.... schplurg Posted December 13, 2021 Author Posted December 13, 2021 Not very familiar with other cities and their ponds. San Jose and Morgan Hill was good until mid-summer. It took care of my "quick fishing after work" thing. Fremont is too far for that. Next year I have different fishing goals, and I will move away from the Bay Area. It's all about the kayak now and that is not worth doing anywhere near here, in my opinion, combination of cost and fishery quality. And I actually hate living here. Really hate it. I moved near the Delta five years ago and started fishing (stripers) but came back here to help my parents. They recently moved to Oregon so I'm ready to get back out of here. May even move where they are (Salem area). I just came back from there and there is no shortage of waterways. This video was the farthest I've ever walked to creek fish now that I think about it. Normally I'd say a mile or two because I know where my spots are, but my usual creek is now dry. And I actually like and need the hike and exercise. Of all the people I saw hiking/walking and biking this day I was the only one fishing. Now I know why LOL. I will be at the Delta a lot this year. It's the place I want to do a lot of my fishing. My Dad lives on Lake Tulloch and I do well there and it's a beautiful location, and full. So I will be there a lot too. Mainly in the kayak. Creek and river fishing from now on will be mainly in the mountains for trout and I have my van set up so I can camp in it for that. I enjoy crashing through the brush looking for those magic spots. 2 Quote
fishhugger Posted December 13, 2021 Posted December 13, 2021 yeah, agreed the bay area sort of reeks... entertainment here is sideshows, guns, shootings, and being mugged. even my van has been shot, lol. the creek fishing you're doing seems so tough --- that;'s my personal bias (aka laziness). good luck in the delta. i haven't fished there much... no boat, etc... i'm a bankie. schplurg Posted December 14, 2021 Author Posted December 14, 2021 Honestly, I do ponds and easier stuff mostly. Most of my Youtube vids are the same spots over and over. But every once in a while I just go for it, especially when I'm desperate, like now. Hopefully this rain helps, and keeps coming. Coyote Creek was my "home" for the past few years. I was devastated when it dried. Kinda curious to see if some of the remaining pools are filled with water. Some still had fish. But it's off season now for the creek. Quote
Zcoker Posted December 22, 2021 Posted December 22, 2021 Down here in South Florida, what's nice about bank fishing in the Everglades is that most of the levees go for miles and miles....it's a pull over park and fish kinda thing. You basically drive along the levee until you find a spot that looks decent and then pull over and fish it. When done, just move on down the levee a ways until another spot looks good. No walking necessary lol 1 Quote

And from what I've seen it doesn't cost $20 just to launch a kayak. "Launch" a kayak, sigh. Heck you have to pay to "launch" an inner tube here! Inspection, parking and launch fee. Quote

I mean, sure, I can see the parking/meter fee or the entrance fees in parks, places like that. But those fees usually include access to all launch areas. To specifically pay to use a launch site for a kayak sounds utterly ridiculous. Here in Florida (or at least SE & SW Florida) we can launch anywhere, anyplace, and anytime most lakes, beaches or whatever for free. Some smaller places do have sunrise to sunset gates but are still open for launching. The Everglades is wide open for hundreds of miles to do whatever, day or night. State parks we all know about. I've had no problems off the beaches, day or night, launching baits with a kayak when shark fishing for NOAA. I guess each area has its ups and downs. 1 Quote

And the post below yours shows what I already thought was true - that Florida doesn't charge for many or most places. I don't feel I'm getting my money's worth in any way in this state. Quote
