plitz Posted December 12, 2021 Posted December 12, 2021 I understand this is bit of a stretch,I need a moving bait rod for tournaments.I will be fishing as a co-angler and need to keep my rods to a minimum. Is there a rod out there that would throw spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, lipless baits and possibly sqaure bills. All baits weighing around 3/8ths to 1/2oz. I will also be bringing a Megabass 7'2" MH X-Bites and a Expride 7'2" MH.I was thinking I may need a rod with more moderate action? Thx... Quote
Super User Catt Posted December 12, 2021 Super User Posted December 12, 2021 I had you covered until you threw squarebill out there. Quote
Super User DogBone_384 Posted December 12, 2021 Super User Posted December 12, 2021 Kistler has what he calls a light-medium-heavy rod. It’s a MH with a light tip with a mod-fast action. I have a few of them, including a custom one for my wife. I throw just about everything on them except drop shot and finesse. They’re great quality and built here in the USA. Kistler’s having a year end clearance sale now, you can get one for as low as $99. Good luck. Quote

softwateronly Posted December 12, 2021 Posted December 12, 2021 Poison Adrena 173MH I haven't thrown a squarebill on it yet, but either the poison or the expride will do ok depending on cover. scott 1 Quote

Anything in the medium heavy fast or moderate range works well with me, I use mono which also has because you don't really need to feel a moving bait bite they just slam it, then by using mono you also don't usually need a glass/composite rod, maybe carry two spools for your mh trig/jig rod or two reels, one with mono, and one with floro/braid2leader whichever you prefer. I carry two reels and one rod, always a mh fast with a 7:6:1 with mono for moving baits and a 6:6:6 with floro for anything else really. Of corse this is if you don't have alot of room to carry a bunch of technique specific rods on your boat/yak. Long story short mono is a very good moving bait line on a standards jig rod from topwater to spinnerbaits but is a no go for fishing the heavy gage hooks on a swimjig in cover r something. Then you can just keep another reel with your favorite slowdown style line and gear ratio in your pack and throw it back on your jig rod 1 1 Quote
txchaser Posted December 12, 2021 Posted December 12, 2021 For me, an MH Mod, or in some of the daiwa lines, Regular, is great for open-hook moving baits and swimjigs. 1 Quote
Super User T-Billy Posted December 13, 2021 Super User Posted December 13, 2021 Heckuva rod for the $$$ and well suited to the baits you mentioned. Quote
TigerBassAU Posted December 13, 2021 Posted December 13, 2021 Hammer rods 7'3" MH. Amazing moving bait rod. Fishes more like a medium+. Very light weight (less than 4 oz), and USA made. Comes in either the elite or Jak series (same blank). Bonus: it will also sling a 6xd in a pinch. Quote
Super User jbsoonerfan Posted December 13, 2021 Super User Posted December 13, 2021 I have a 7'2 MH Glass Expride that I would feel confident throwing all those baits on. Quote
Super User FishTank Posted December 13, 2021 Super User Posted December 13, 2021 G. Loomis IMX Pro Crankbait rod (not the deep flex version), either the 843C or the 845C. I have the 903C and it fishes with a more mod-fast action, making it more versatile. It will cast a lipless a long way and works great for square bills. I also use this rod for chatterbaits. I was not a big fan of it for spinnerbaits but it works. I prefer a fast taper for those baits. Quote
plitz Posted December 13, 2021 Author Posted December 13, 2021 Thx... everyone, due to the TW sale I bought the Dobyns Champion XP 734. Any recommendations for line? Should I use 40-50# braid or something like 15# CXX? 1 Quote
Super User Columbia Craw Posted December 13, 2021 Super User Posted December 13, 2021 I’m in the same boat with club events. I can fish everyone of those lure types and do with my Kaden 735CB and 15 lb floro. I have two Champion 734’s and I prefer the Kaden for those moving baits. Quote

I find it hard to really crack em on a hookset with this rod, but with moving baits and braid to leader, my hookup/land ratio has been really good. If you like braid to leader, I think this is a good setup to keep using it. scott 1 Quote

Because then I could cut off the leader and throw something like a buzz toad,if I had to. 1 Quote
lunkerboss923 Posted January 3, 2022 Posted January 3, 2022 I feel like the 735cb is a great rod for lipless and squarebills. I just don't think the 735cb can throw 3/8oz spinnerbaits with a trailer likewise with a chatterbait and trailer. You're going to want a glass rod for those. Probably the 736cb glass. It took some convincing, but the 734c is a rod that can fish spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, swim jigs, squarebills and lipless and I'd go with a Sierra 734C. It's got a unique action that makes it slower than a Champion, which is ideal for moving baits. Quote
Super User Deleted account Posted January 3, 2022 Super User Posted January 3, 2022 Any MH rod that's not too fast or too HM will do. Quote

Mileage will vary as to what people like for a chatterbait rod but the MH is plenty for me in most conditions. I will use braid when I feel I need more power, faster hook sets, or better lure control. Quote
KP Duty Posted January 4, 2022 Posted January 4, 2022 Mbr 843 loomis will work. I used an old IMX for the same techiques as a non-boater myself years ago. Quote
