I know ZERO about game consoles. I acquired a PS3 from my nephew to hopefully give to my grandson for Christmas. Don't know how long it's been sitting in his garage. Had no cords so I ordered a power cord, a controller cord and an HDMI cord. Cords showed up today and when I got it started up I get a message "The file system on the system storage is corrupted and will be restored." The unit restarts and I have an idle dark screen. Can't get it to do anything else. I look at online troubleshooting. I start it up in safe mode and I am in the process of restoring it to factory defaults...I think...I hope.

Am I on the right track? The wrong track? Is it junk?

He also gave me an XBOX but he thinks there's issues with it.

PS3 is pretty much obsolete at this point.  I had that happen ob my old one and did the factory reset and it was good for a little while but then it started happening more often.  I eventually got a PS4

It's for a 5 year old. Don't care if it's obsolete. He's been playing Nintendo Switch at Walmart. Switch aren't available because of the chip shortage.

Ya I’d say the ps3 is scrap now too. I have a ps4 and even that is starting to get out dated. The only reason people are still using ps4 is because the ps5’s are impossible to find at msrp. They’re about 1000 bucks on eBay but I ain’t paying that.

gotcha.  hopefully the factory refresh works.

I think the hard drive is bricked. I did the hard reset. I was able to get to a startup menu and set the wifi and whatnot up. It prompts for a software update but, when I attempt that, it tells me the storage is not accessible.

On the bright side, I was able to locate a Nintendo Switch at a Best Buy and picked it up after work. They must have got it in today because yesterday there were none to be found in Northern IL.

I have to add this to this thread, because I see this so often on forums. People say "Don't get them video games, take them hunting, fishing, play sports, etc.". Now mind you, I love all those things and most of the people saying those things grew up doing those things because.........well there weren't video games back then. We introduced our son to games at an early age (4 or 5) and he played baseball, went fishing, hunting, etc. He ended up being a "gamer". That was what he was interested in. I was told, or had to hear it that video games were the devil and kids that played video games were worthless, etc. etc. etc. He is now a Soph in high school, he has never made a B in his life and is an amazing kid. He just started his first job and is enrolled in a cyber security class this year and will enroll in a Vocational Technology program next year and finish his high school career with 2 years of college experience and a 99% chance to receive a job in the field upon completion. I've told my son since the day we could communicate that I only wanted the best for him and I would try to give him the opportunity to do whatever it was he wanted to do. I'm d**n proud of him, even if he is a "gamer" and a dork and not a cool sports kid.

Sorry, didn't mean to hijack, just figured I would get in before the....BuY hIm A rEeL iNsTeAd post happened.

Kid already loves fishing. It was 20 degrees last weekend and he was asking to go.

He’s going to love that Switch - mine has had one for a few years now. It’s just enough to be fun without being all -encompassing. Not a lot of first person shooter games for it either. It travels well and you can play it with him!

I still play Call of Duty at the age of 39.  Does that make me an adult dork?  I grew up playing plenty of video games on Nintendo, Sega, N64, and the Playstation consoles.  I still played youth sports, went hunting, and fishing too.  Just because I occasionally played video games doesn't make me completely useless, overweight, lazy.

Its when you allow it to take over and take priority over other tasks, is when you've become obsessed.  An hour here or there is not going to ruin your life.

Video games have come a long ways over the years.  I can remember playing Super Mario Brothers on Nintendo 25 years ago.  Now its a global online thing against people on the other side of the planet.

Yep...

Don't worry though, you're in good company. I still occasionally fire up 'Ultimate Doom' on the PC when I have that feeling that I want to kill something/somebody...and I'm 62

A month or so ago I bought an Oculus Quest 2 VR headset and it's been a lot of fun. There's an OK fishing game that I play now and then. It has South Korean lakes and seas, but I think the latest update has west coast US lakes.

The table tennis game is fun, as is the mini golf, bowling,  and a game called Superhot VR. So far all of the games I have played are through the headset processor and storage, but I can connect to PC games.

However, with my latest PC build I did not want to spend $1,500 - $2,500 on a video card that should cost only $300, so I will have to wait until the chip shortage ends. My old video card can't run VR. I really want to try some racing games in VR.

There is a good chance it is bricked, but usually Bricking is the blue screen of death, so I'd try to let it repair itself, data corruptions are extremely common when shut off during a game and usually will self fix, if it doesn't you may need to replace the hard drive. The nentendo switch imo is a great option at the moment with great age appropriate games for kids but they are amazing for adults as well. Some games I like include donkey Kong tropical freeze and animal crossing. Super Mario 3d is another+ on the 3ds you can use it as a console on your TV as well
