Alex from GA Posted December 12, 2021 Posted December 12, 2021 I learned to bass fish in So Cal about 1980 with probably one of the best finesse fishing guys in town. When I moved to GA in '99 I went with a few guys that power fished mostly and I almost always out fished them. They were smart guys and learned quickly. Now we're pretty much even. Last year I caught my largest bass on a buzzbait so I know if they're active what to do. Quote
CrashVector Posted December 12, 2021 Posted December 12, 2021 Welcome to the light side of the force. We have punch and cookies here, plus we catch more fish On 12/10/2021 at 7:50 PM, DitchPanda said: Yes...idiots. Its been discussed on here before that many tough guy macho fisherman think using a spinning rod is for wimps. Those are usually the guys getting beat in tournaments by 75 guys using spinning gear. Pride comes before the fall. Lmfao!!! Ive said here MANY times....I'm a finesse fisherman 99.5% of the time....baitcaster or spinning. Ive caught more fish finesse fishing than most of my power fisherman friends have lied about. Powerfshing catches active fish. Finesse fishing catches them all...active or not. 4 hours ago, WRB said: Spinning tackle for bass fishing went nation wide when the late Aaron Martens move east to fish the B.A.S.S. Elite circuit around 2000. Aaron won televised tournaments using the drop shot presentation with spinning tackle. Today it’s hard to find a bass pro without spinning tackle on the deck along with casting tackle. Reason; catching bass is the goal and sometimes it takes finesse presentations to be competitive. Tom We've been using spinning equipment for bass fishing here since the 1960's. Why? Because it works. 2 Quote
Super User Darth-Baiter Posted December 12, 2021 Super User Posted December 12, 2021 I don’t worry about my manliness while fishing. I’m pretty sure a double digit would make me cry like a girl. 1 Quote
Super User bowhunter63 Posted December 12, 2021 Super User Posted December 12, 2021 Guido Hibbdon was as tough as they come. He made a lot of money with a spinning rod Quote
Super User Darth-Baiter Posted December 12, 2021 Super User Posted December 12, 2021 I’ve never even heard of the prejudices against spinning? What gives? just because taming backlash is difficult? Or is it the robust drag numbers? I’m friggen accurate with a spinning setup. And fighting a larger fish on spinning is wildly exciting. 2 Quote

Just the idea that using spinning gear or Finesse techniques is somehow less manly. I'd say my fishing is probably about a 50/25/25 split. 25% spinning and throwing lighter stuff, 25% standard BC stuff (jigs, cranks, lipless, spinnerbaits, top water, etc) and 50% ultimate heavy with all the slop frogging I do. It's never occurred to me that throwing a weightless senko on my spin rod isn't macho....lol. Even when I'm throwing a Barbie Corvette bubblegum Senko. 2 Quote
Super User WRB Posted December 13, 2021 Super User Posted December 13, 2021 Most bass anglers have heard of Gary Yamamoto because of his lures, Gary was a Western Bass Pro on the Colorado River using spinning tackle....didn’t own a casting reel. Quote

Well some people aren't secure in their manhood! I also never feel.weird using spinning gear..just didn't do it much in the past. 1 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted December 13, 2021 Global Moderator Posted December 13, 2021 I'll fish a spinning rod while I'm wearing a pink shirt ? My biggest limit in my kayak tournaments this season was caught 100% on spinning gear (94" on Ned rig and Slider). Call it a fairy wand, sissy stick, whatever, I guess I'm not manly enough to understand the desire to refuse to adapt and get beat but it does seem to be a real thing. Quote
MacJig Posted December 14, 2021 Posted December 14, 2021 Probably 85% or more of my fishing is with spinning gear, aka the fairy wand. As a bank angler I find I can avoid brush, trees and other instructions much more easily with spinning gear as compared to casting. Love ? my spinning set ups ! Quote

I consider ultralight and lighter than what is supposed to be fished with to be the true “power” fishing. Totally agree with you, there's a huge sense of accomplishment when you catch a big one on 6# line and a ML rod, for me the fight is more exiting than getting them with 40# line and a heavy stick. now don't get me wrong, I love catching them anyway posible. 1 Quote
