MacJig Posted December 10, 2021 Posted December 10, 2021 So, I think it's inevitable: if you love the sport of fishing and count it as your #1 favorite past time in life, you will become a Tackleaholic. One of my closets is full upstairs and one shelving downstairs is being "worked on". I have Tupperware type containers full of hooks, plastics, cranks and other miscellaneous items. I know some of this will never be used or "used up" but I still like adding to my collection especially when I want to try a new technique. I saw a guy on YouTube who has rooms (yes, rooms) full of crankbaits. Anyone else out there part of this club? What is your weak spot? I don't think it ever goes away!! 1 Quote
Super User gim Posted December 10, 2021 Super User Posted December 10, 2021 This topic has come up a lot recently. Is there such a thing as too much tackle? Do you like to buy lures just to collect tackle? Are you a tackle hoarder? I buy lures one at a time now. I try it. If its works, I might buy another one in a different color, size, etc. In the past I might have bought 3 or 4 of them initially without even trying them. Well now if it doesn't work, I'm only stuck with one useless lure instead of 3 or 4. 4 Quote
Super User Jigfishn10 Posted December 10, 2021 Super User Posted December 10, 2021 I think I fall in the minimalist category. I find what works and buy enough to get me thru the season. 3 Quote
Super User Tennessee Boy Posted December 10, 2021 Super User Posted December 10, 2021 I am definitely not a tackle collector but like most I have much more than I need. Most of it is in my garage. I try to limit what I take on my boat. Too much on the boat just gets in the way. I've learned that people enjoy the sport in many different ways. Some enjoy catching big fish. Some enjoy catching lots of fish. Some enjoy collecting tackle. Some enjoy fast boat. Some enjoy balancing fishing rods on their finger. The list goes on and on. I think there's a need for Angling Psychologists that could help us understand exactly what we enjoy about this sport so we can focus on that. 4 Quote
Capriceragtop Posted December 10, 2021 Posted December 10, 2021 Yup. I have way too many soft plastics, but I keep them inside so they hopefully will last for years. Probably will go out this weekend and buy way too many dropshop weights, as I've never tried it, and I hear it's a productive style when fish are suspended. Quote

I decided that next year I'm going to become more adept at drop shotting. So I'm whistling The tackle/gear in! ? Quote
Super User scaleface Posted December 10, 2021 Super User Posted December 10, 2021 I use to try to buy everything . It accumulates fast and now I have more than I know what to do with . I dont buy anymore unless its to replace something or it fills a niche . 4 Quote
EWREX Posted December 10, 2021 Posted December 10, 2021 i've gotten better since becoming more focused on tournament fishing. i tend to buy what i primarily will always throw, but now i just buy in bulk. that being said, i do have large bins full of excess tackle from previous years ? Quote
Junk Fisherman Posted December 10, 2021 Posted December 10, 2021 I used to work part-time at a tackle shop and bought so much tackle. Granted, I always got great deals and often loaded up on plastics at a $1 per bag. I still have a closet in my basement of lures I rarely ever use and a couple Plano boxes in my garage with lures that don't make it to the boat. One of my favorite things to do is to use old baits I've had for 20+ years and catch fish on them. When I started using Stupid Tubes I had so many tubes from my old tackle shop days. If I never bought another pitching plastic bait again, I would be okay. As my years of experience add up, I know exactly where and how I am going to fish which helps eliminate a lot of tackle I don't use. When I was an inexperienced fishermen I felt I needed a lot of different baits and thus bought a lot more. Nowadays, I stick to buying what I use and I only get a few new baits per year. With that being said, I did fish a lot of jerkbaits this fall and lost several to musky and pike. Probably spent close to $100 on Black Friday sales on jerkbaits alone with none of them being 110s. Overall, I just need some minor tackle additions this offseason to be ready for next year. 2 Quote
Super User the reel ess Posted December 10, 2021 Super User Posted December 10, 2021 My wife and daughter say I like to watch YouTube videos and buy tackle more than I like to actually fish. And there is some truth to that. But they have no idea how bad some of you people have it. 6 1 Quote
Gera Posted December 10, 2021 Posted December 10, 2021 No, I don't have a problem.... I can quit at any time. 3 5 Quote
Super User Catt Posted December 10, 2021 Super User Posted December 10, 2021 Tackleaholic? Nah! I do have a fairly diverse collection most if which I used & then retired it. Except plastics! I got at 100 lbs of plastics of every color & shape. 5 Quote
Mr. Aquarium Posted December 10, 2021 Posted December 10, 2021 I’ve accumulated a a lot of tackle. But most of it was back when I had fishing ADD. Oh that looks cool, ooo this might work etc blah blah blah. Now that I found my self, I figured out the way I like to fish and what I like to fish. I find my self only buying certain baits and certain companies. I love the strike king coffee tube. So I own a bunch of those. I love real prey swimbaits own a bunch of those. So to an extent I may be a tackle hoarder. But Im not spending money willy nilly on a bunch of random baits and lures. I’m very particular on what I buy 1 Quote

Most likely won't ever change as long as I have the money to do so! I am guessing the guy you are talking about with the rooms full of cranks might be Epic Eric? That man has more tackle by himself than most of us combined has! haha Quote
HaydenS Posted December 10, 2021 Posted December 10, 2021 the good thing about tackleholics is that they admit their addicted Quote

Yes it is Epic Eric from the Smallmouth Crush channel (I believe that's the name of it). It's incredible almost jaw-dropping the number of crankbaits he has. 1 Quote

Super User islandbass Posted December 10, 2021 Super User Posted December 10, 2021 I am not. I used to be. Now, all of my lures can fit in a bankers box. ALL of them. I realized certain colors and shapes are more productive for me and stuck with them. It took over a decade to whittle the stash down through use and giving away of lures. I am glad I have the mental fortitude and discipline to lay the law down on the bait monkey. Down, boy! Give my wallet back! Quote
ironbjorn Posted December 10, 2021 Posted December 10, 2021 I guess once upon a time I used to be, but then I realized somewhere along the way that I catch bass on basically everything I buy, so I downsized and only fish what I like to fish now. 1 Quote
Super User Darth-Baiter Posted December 10, 2021 Super User Posted December 10, 2021 Not me. I hate it. What I am however is easily influenced. Somebody tells me this bait is the silver bullet, I buy it to try. ifi try it and I don’t like it for whatever reason. Really try it, it goes into a donation bag. I’ll send it to a school bass club. 1 Quote

Smalliefan2 Posted December 10, 2021 Posted December 10, 2021 I have a lifetime collection, including my dad's tackle. The old stuff still works, though I only throw occasionally. Lotsa plastics, I buy a second and third bag of the color and shape that is working for each year. I can tear up a bagful in one trip at times. Hard baits, the OG series is a good example why we buy more. The only place I found flat sides before was the annual tackle show in east Tn. Did a housekeeping couple years ago, and gave a ton of stuff to the local high school team . Time to do it again. Quote
volzfan59 Posted December 10, 2021 Posted December 10, 2021 Oh yeah, I most definitely am a tackleholic! I haven't purchased near as much this year though. I've been rewiring and updating my boat. Quote
