Well let's try and keep it short and sweet. I currently live in Virginia and recently got into bass fishing, Jan. of this year and I love it. I've watched a ton of fishing videos on YouTube and pulled the trigger at the end of 2020 into 2021. I've always been a salt water guy so this is new territory. I'm mainly a bank fisher but at times I get up to the Williamsburg area and rent a motor and johnboat to fish Waller Mill. I do travel for work at times and I'm currently in Charleston, SC, which I absolutely love. I brought my four poles and tackle with me, went out twice but skunk city both times. I still have a lot to learn and look forward to gaining some knowledge. I know it's "Winter", however, the past few days have been in the 70's. I tried it all yesterday. Top water frog over lilly pads, A good ol texas rigged green pumpkin with red flake senko, spinner with creature bait trailer and a drop shot with a Yammamoto shad. Any advice of what to throw or presentation?

Welcome. I live in the piedmont region of SC. And my sister has a place near the beach with a canal and a pond on it. I fished there a couple weeks ago. The water is a bit too cold for the frog. I haven't caught a frog bass since September. They just stopped biting it. I would see bass chasing in the weeds, but no interest in the frog. As for the other lures, it seems to me you're doing the right things. Right now I'm having a little success with a blade bait, lipless crank and T-rigged craws. I was getting bites on the jig, but they were picking it up by the trailer and not getting the hook. That's why I switched to the T rig. The bite really slows here during Jan-Feb. I might be fishing for one bite a day. But late Feb you can start catching good sized females and it just gets better through spring.

Yeah I figured it may be too cold. I went out to a reservoir after work yesterday and threw a jig, senko, crank and a lipless but no love. Talked to a couple of guys pulling in on their boats and they got skunked as well. Thanks for the tips, I'm definitely looking forward to that Feb. bite.

Yep, it's skunk season in SC. LOL. Now, if you were working in Florida, you'd still be catching bass.

Look up "dead sticking" on You Tube or this Forum and give it a try.

Welcome aboard!

When I was living in the SC Lowcountry I was initially frustrated because I thought the warmer winters meant bass fishing would be good year round. But temperature is relative. So up north the water might be cold for a bass and cause their metabolism to slow at 40 degrees, while in the south that same thing might happen when the water is 55 degrees.

What I found lagoon (pond) fishing in the winter is that it was better to fish for crappie! But when the water warms, you're going to find that all of those hundreds or thousands of stormwater lagoons around you are holding bass, and there will be plenty of 5+ pound bass.

Just keep an eye out for the alligators.

It's going to take a few weeks of a warming trend to get their blood warm enough where they start getting active. If their not on the banks trying to sun themselves now, they will be shortly. After that, they'll be hungry and horny. Stay alert.

Wait - I didn't mean they want to eat you or do stuff with you?

Keep an eye out form them when you're fighting a fish. The males will also be more active and covering a lot of territory looking for a mate.
