I'm the type of person to never (or at least I try to never) discard something that has served me well in my love of sport and hobby or to toss something that has been with me early on. Yes, fishing is both a sport and a hobby to me.  So in my collection I still have my Shakespeare Agility that I paid about nine dollars for. I also have two rods that broke at the tip but I still use. But as i grow in this great sport and hobby I like trying new and better things. So new things get added to old and, well, the collection grows. It's inevitable. But if you are a responsible person, paid your bills, raised your family, stole from no man then ...enjoy. If owning five rods or fifty rods makes you happy, go for it!

Mainly fish from shore, with that in mind, I have 8 combos, from a 7"2" ML spinning rig to an 8' big swimbait rig, and a bunch in between. Some of my rigs are used for more than 1 presentation, I pretty much have everything I fish with covered for how I fish, so yup, my collection is complete.

I also fish from the bank. I think I have 7 set ups. I have everything I do pretty much covered. But is my collection complete, I think not.

My collection goes thru changes every so often. I volunteer for children's programs at some state parks.  So I bring along R & R, lures & tackle.  It is difficult to not allow a child to keep  a set up that catches their first fish.  No barb hooks, corn nibblets and feeding them every few days. Some kids fish.  Others just feed them.  Both are happy.  Until the animal protector shows up. The camp officials do a excellent job.

Sure, I have been saying that to myself on daily basis since years ago, twice on Sunday.

I buy as I need/want things.  Some things I then get rid of and others, not so much.  I think I am at around 7 casting combos, 4 spinning and 8 or so fly rods and few surf rods and catfish rigs thrown in for good measure.

the last few years I have primarily been fly fishing and a lot of my bait casters are upgraded citica E series and those parts are harder to come by so if they **** the bed, I will have to get something else. I guess.

My fly rods will never outnumber my casting rods.  I decided late this fall that I'd like to start fly fishing for bass and panfish.  I have an old GL3 9' 8wt (2-piece about 25 years old) and a few years ago I picked up a low cost 7'6" 3wt built on an IM6 blank.  Naturally this wasn't good enough so I added a few more rods and reels.   I stayed inexpensive (not necessarily cheap).   Reels: Pisicfun Sword and one Echo Bravo LT.  Rods: 2 Redington CTs, 2 Echo Carbon XLs and an Aetos.  Aetos is a 6wt, Echos are a 4wt and 5wt, and CTs are a 3wt and 4wt.  Looking forward to getting out.  Had a few casting lessons years ago, but would love to take some more if Covid19 ever lets up.

Mind telling me what fly rods you fish with?  There isn't enough talk on fly fishing to satisfy my appetite.  :teeth:

I've got three different mod fast combos for cranking.

In spinning, I have (all fast action) L, ML, M (3), and a MH.

In casting, I have (all fast action), L, ML, M, MH (2), and a H.

Seems like I have things covered, with a little redundancy in the most popular spinning and casting sizes. I think I'm good for a while. Time to just go fishing.

With my four recent purchases: two rods and two reels, I can now honestly say "Dude ..that's enough."

Unless something breaks, I have zero excuses or reason to buy more gear.

It brings my total to:

3 Abu silver max combos

1 Curado DC with silvermax rod

1 Revo s with veritas rod combo

1 Revo s spinning combo

1 Revo SX with veritas plx tournament

1 Revo s spinning with plx tournament

1 Shimano Symetre combo

1 Abu catfish commando combo

1 Abu Max STX spinning combo

1 Abu Max STX spincast combo

2 BPS quantum spinning combos

I honestly can't see myself buying anything else, so I guess my gear monkey has been satisfied.

Sell it all and start over?

The one beauty of a fly rod is that it can legit do multiple things well with a simple leader adjustment.

As far as rods go in my current lineup I have:

3wt-wetfly glass rod  6'6" (hasn't been fished yet)

4wt-Sage DS2 9' probably 20 years old still use it for spring creeks

7wt-TFO min mag 7'11"

7wt-Sage XP 9'-my absolute favorite rod I have ever fished with.  I had it blow apart at the ferrule last year on a hookset and I sent it back and paid the $160 for a repair and it is good as new...huge advantage to being made here is they literally made me a new section for my 20 year old rod

2-8wt TFO mangrove one new model the mangrove coastal-one set up with sink tip

Sage Bass  II Largemouth-10/11 WT equivalent

I also have a broken st Croix avid 8'4wt that I am debating on sending back or just tossing it because the money it would cost to "warranty" wouldn't be worth it to me.

I love all the rods I have to be honest and they all serve different purposes.  TFO are growing on me and for the money I don't think there is a better rod out there.  That being said, even my 20 year old Sage XP feels better to me.  There is something loose about the TFO that I cannot pinpoint but it makes me check the connections more often and they are never loose.  After a few hours of fishing I start to ignore it but it is always there.  I see it in both my coastal and my mini-mag though.  Now I will say the warranty on the TFO is fantastic.  I broke another mini-mag I had when I tipped my kayak over off my cart.  I sent it in with a check for $40.  they called me back and said we don't have that rod anymore so we can give you a credit of $250 since that is what the rod cost.  I said for real, they said yup so I got the new mangrove coastal for $80 if you include the original $40 I sent in and the difference.  Oh and I got the rod as a combo on sale when they were discontinued for I want to say $150.

I have all kinds of reels ranging from Lamson to Galvan, a couple Sage and a few Reddington.

I am not sure if you tie but there is a thread on here I created for sharing flies that has some great info.  I will be adding more to it here soon.  I am finishing up my last week of 3 classes in grad school so my time will free up a little so I can get to tying for the winter.

Thanks flyfisher.  Looks like you've got some nice gear!  I did pick up a Sage ZXL 9' 4wt between buying the Echos and the other 3 new rods.  Thinking about getting a vise later this winter.  Got Christmas shopping right now to spend all my free cash on.  :lol1:

Think I purchased enough flies for bluegills and other panfish, but need some more for bass.  Can you give me the link to the tying thread?  Thanks.  I've looked at many fly pictures on another forum.  Great tyers and great pictures.  Know I'll never be that good.  I'm not artistic at all.

Not at all. I am 14 and an avid fisherman from the east coast and I have just started to get into the real serious (650$) bait casting setups. My arsenal has just started.

Wow!  When I was 14 I couldn't afford a $6.50 setup.  The money I made working on a farm went towards school clothes to help my parents.  Pretty nice that you can afford those kind of setups.  Cheaper in the long run, tho, as you won't be upgrading nearly as often as I did.  Congratulations!  :D

The only rod/reel I need to add to the arsenal this offseason is a small swimbait rod.  I am still not sure how I broke my 792 Dobyns Champ that I used exclusively for 4" swimbaits on a ballhead jig.  I am going to upgrade that rod to a 742 Dobyns Champ Extreme baitcasting rod.  I started using the light action baitcasting rod after I broke the 792 this fall and I really liked it.  The rest of my arsenal is pretty much set.

Spinning

761 Daiwa Steez Ned (unbelievable rod)

741 Dobyns Champ Extreme: finesse swimbaits

742 Dobyns Champ Extreme Spinning:  Dropshot and multi-purpose
763 Dobyns Champ: cracking a tube, stupid tubes, small jerks

702 Dobyns Champ:  Multipurpose:  spybaits, tubes, ect

Casting

742 Dobyns Champ Extreme:  dropshot (3/8 and 1/2 oz) w/a Curado MGL70 (love this combo)

742 Dobyns Champ Extreme:  finesse swimbaits

703 Dobyns Champ:  multipurpose- plastics, senkos

735 Dobyns Champ:  football jigs, frogs, punching

704 Dobyns Champ Crankbait:  jerkbaits, lighter topwater, shallow cranks

843 GLX:  Pitching plastics, Sleepers

844 GLX:  jigs, C-rig

7' Croix Tournament Bass Spinnerbait Sweeper:  Chatterbaits, swimjigs, spinnerbaits, buzzbaits

7'10 BPS Crankin Stick Heavy:  Deep diving crankbaits, A-rigs

Kicking around the idea of getting the new Steez 761 for hairjigs and Neds but it is sold out everywhere the last time I looked.  Might have to replace a baitcaster in which the anti-reverse is going out.

I do / did a lot more early season fly fishing this spring. Casting in winds on open water is only able to do power roll casting or trolling a slow sinking fly. Big SMB are a hand full with direct  1 to 1 ratio reels.  I sill have 1 automatic spring powered fly reel. That does improve   C &  R   percentage. But I know I am cheating with it.  I sometimes use double flies  in tandem  on the line.

My collection keeps reducing every year.  The days of buying a bait that looks interesting are over and I focus on what I actually use.  As for rods, I am also okay unless I start throwing a new bait that will force me to grab another.

Posted

I don't need any more rods or reels.

Until I buy a second boat. A big bass boat.  :)   Maybe next year. It's more of a storage problem than anything. Well, there's a supply shortage.

That's my m.o. as well.

Over the years, I've found I buy fewer things.

mine won't be complete until i get my dream rod: the IMX Pro MBR903C. and probably a new reel to go with it a year or two later lol

I have the 2015 E6X MBR903 and like it but i want to upgrade.

With years of fishing. My only rods that are replaced are the ones crushed by a car door or stepped on.

My very old Mitchell spinning 300 reels are all still perfect with a drop of oil every 10 years.

I'm good for now.  Although......

Every time I buy a new rod and reel it’s the last combo I will ever need. This has happened every year for the past decade.

I have a paltry list in comparison.  And I don’t have it memorized.

I do want a better punch rod.  My sixgills is too heavy.  Hurts my elbow.
