CrashVector Posted December 4, 2021 Posted December 4, 2021 With my four recent purchases: two rods and two reels, I can now honestly say "Dude ..that's enough." Unless something breaks, I have zero excuses or reason to buy more gear. It brings my total to: 3 Abu silver max combos 1 Curado DC with silvermax rod 1 Revo s with veritas rod combo 1 Revo s spinning combo 1 Revo SX with veritas plx tournament 1 Revo s spinning with plx tournament 1 Shimano Symetre combo 1 Abu catfish commando combo 1 Abu Max STX spinning combo 1 Abu Max STX spincast combo 2 BPS quantum spinning combos I honestly can't see myself buying anything else, so I guess my gear monkey has been satisfied. 2 Quote

Super User JustJames Posted December 4, 2021 Super User Posted December 4, 2021 Never say enough but ones have things more important in life. I haven’t bought new reels or rods for awhile now, I even walked away from a good deal on reels that I really wanted. My wife gave me a permission for another Zillion SV TW, but I decided not to. How many setups do I have? as my wife always said “too many” which will cover me from 1/16oz all the way to 2.5oz lures. I may win the bait monkey this round but I doubt it’s gonna be forever. 2 1 Quote

Super User gim Posted December 4, 2021 Super User Posted December 4, 2021 I haven't bought a new rod or reel in years. Unless something breaks, I really have no reason to. Obviously some of my setups get used more than others, but there are a couple that rarely get used. If I had more, there would be some that I probably never used. And if I never use them, I don't need them. Quote

Super User PhishLI Posted December 5, 2021 Super User Posted December 5, 2021 No way, but not because I don't already have everything I need in triplicate, or that the truth is all I've ever really needed to catch bass on is three combos. In a doomsday fantasy scenario I could pare down to one 7' MF spinning combo, one 7'3" MHF casting combo, and one 7'3" H combo and catch nearly every fish ever I've caught or will catch going forward. But there's more to fishing than just catching fish for me. Regardless of which hobby I'm into I like trying out new-to-me gear. I get the minimalist approach, but fishing's not simply a utilitarian exercise for me. I like playing with toys and switching reels to different rods in search of that goldilocks feel. Some sort of unexpected magic usually happens within these gear rotations, and price isn't always a factor. An expensive reel doesn't always land on an expensive rod, and vice versa. Feel rules the outcome and that's final for me, for the time being anyway. 3 Quote

And if I never use them, I don't need them. That's why I got the Revos. Alloy frames, should last a good long time. The SilverMax combos, etc are my "Don't feel like bringing the good stuff to the local pond" combos. That's kinda what I meant about having so many. I currently use them all, but at THIS point, I really only REGULARLY use five: the two Revo baitcaster, the two Revo spinning combos, and the Shimano Symetre combo. I can't justify buying more if it means I have combos that never get used, because then it feels like just wasted money to me 2 Quote

Happybeerbuzz Posted December 5, 2021 Posted December 5, 2021 After getting a dedicated punch rod and a big swimbait rod, I think I have all the bases covered. For me, it is time to devote some effort into finding out what I like to do most as a bass fisherman. Perhaps after that, I might get back in the market to upgrade something. 1 Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted December 5, 2021 Super User Posted December 5, 2021 For now, yes. And enough for my next life. The past 3 years has seen me slowing way down with my fishing. Some because of the area I live in, but much of it due to life changes. But even before that I had gathered too much gear. Like PhishLi I like to try new-2-me gear. Like gimruis I have a few outfits that haven't been used in quite awhile. However, there are very few rods I'd be willing to sell and even fewer reels I'd be willing to let go. Like a lot of guys here, I am unwilling to post...or mention numbers...of combos. It's way too many for some and not nearly enough for others. Although I got out very little the past 3 years, I continued to buy. Almost none of the new and new-2-me stuff over that time period has been used. This includes gear I REALLY want to fish such as a couple Witch Doctor Shaman and Kistler Helium 3 rods (all used, natch). Reels in that category include a Helios SX, both Daiwa Coastal models, 2 Lew's and and older Steez. Yup, like many, I've been upgrading the quality of my gear. The Bait Monkey has not been kind to me. Quote
Super User Cgolf Posted December 5, 2021 Super User Posted December 5, 2021 With my two purchases this year my collection is complete and I don’t feel the need to upgrade to rods in grades above what I have. Right now some solid rods are my backups. Only reasons for upgrading would be if one of the high end St Croix or Dobyns dropped into the Avid or Sierra price range. 14 hours ago, QED said: It's like computer or other tech gear. Honestly for me while rods have gotten lighter, more sensitive, etc for me I actually liked the older rods I have vs a lot of the newer options out there even though I give up some sensitivity. I like a true moderate action rod and the older sticks I have perfectly suit my fishing style and finding that action in todays rods is getting difficult. Quote
mrpao Posted December 5, 2021 Posted December 5, 2021 Can we have too much gear? That's like asking if you can have too much money or a girl too pretty. I say "No". My arsenal is never complete because manufacturers keep coming out with newer and better gear. I'm a tackle junky, so if I think it's going to give me a slight edge, I'll try it. We dont buy fishing combos as a need. It's a want. Anyway, if we stop buying new gear, this billion dollar industry would crash. Then there would be nothing new to buy, if we wanted it. 2 Quote
FishinBuck07 Posted December 5, 2021 Posted December 5, 2021 Nope already have a couple more combos planned for this winter. Thought I was good but figured out I wasn't! Haha 1 Quote
Super User FishTank Posted December 5, 2021 Super User Posted December 5, 2021 I will say probably not ever going to be done but it depends on my state of mind. If I look at my rods and reels as a collection or just fun "Toys" (as my wife calls them), then no, I am not done, not even close. If I look at them as tools to win tournaments, then yes I am done. I can't fish all of what I have at once but I would have all the right stuff to get the job done. 1 Quote
Super User GreenPig Posted December 5, 2021 Super User Posted December 5, 2021 Ha - Ha. That's funny right there, I don't care who you are. Quote
TcRoc Posted December 5, 2021 Posted December 5, 2021 Nope.. never. As stated new products/toys hit the market . Always want to try different gear. Part of the fun. Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted December 5, 2021 Super User Posted December 5, 2021 I buy as I need/want things. Some things I then get rid of and others, not so much. I think I am at around 7 casting combos, 4 spinning and 8 or so fly rods and few surf rods and catfish rigs thrown in for good measure. the last few years I have primarily been fly fishing and a lot of my bait casters are upgraded citica E series and those parts are harder to come by so if they **** the bed, I will have to get something else. I guess. Quote
