Hey I have been flip flopping between braid and fluoro for my casting setups.  Just wondering what you all use for each presentation. Seems like there was a trend to go straight braid to leader for everything, but now I’m seeing a lot of pros go straight fluoro for a lot of presentations.
Braid, braid to leader, straight fluoro, mono…bonus points for sharing lb as well
topwater-walking

frog

Shallow crank (squarebill)

deep crank

blade bait/lipless

pitch/flip

swim jig

bottom contact (fb jig, sh, ned…)

spinnerbait, chatterbait

Straight fluoro or braid to leader? What lb test?

Straight 12 lb fluoro. I’ve never tied a leader on in my life and probably never will

I use P-Line Tactical fluoro and McCoy xtra clear copoly. Been using these lines for about 3 years and they haven’t failed me yet.

Topwater/walking: .33 mm co-poly or mono

Frog: 50# straight braid

Squarebill: .33mm co-poly or mono

Deep crank: .33mm co-poly or mono

Lipless: .33mm co-poly or mono

Pitch/Flip: straight 15# fluoro in sparse cover (I don't fish thick gnarly stuff, unless it's weeds - in that case straight 50# braid)

Swim Jig: 15# fluoro

FB jigs/dragging jigs: 15# fluoro

Ned, shaky, tubes, general spinning stuff: 15# or 10# braid to 8# or 6# fluoro leader

Spinnerbait/Chatterbait: Either .33 co-poly or 15# fluoro. Just depends on which rod I decide to tie them on that day.

Yes

I see no advantage to using different brands for different techniques.

12#, 14#, 16# Sunline Sniper and 20# Shooter depending on what I’m throwing where.

30# or 40# 832 for most single hook casting. No leader except for deep snaggy places. Trilene XT for trebles and spinning gear. Simple and works well for me.

10-20lb braid to 6-10lb mono leader for spinning. Keep going back and forth for baitcasting straight braid 30-40lb, braid to 10-15lb leader, and straight big game mono 10-15lb mono.

For me, I have found the rod makes the biggest determining factor. Stiffer rods feel better with mono, rods with more tip feels better with braid to me. I also don't fish treble hook baits very much. Mostly single hook presentations.

Braid for flipping jigs and punching mats  30lb. and 60 which I also use for frogs.

Braid to fluoro leader for casting/swim jigs 30lb. to 12lb.

Braid mainline to mono leader for C-Rigs 30lb. to 20lb.

Straight fluoro for cranks and jerkbaits 10lb. or 12lb.

Straight fluoro for finesse plastics 8lb.

Straight mono for topwater  the bigger the bait, the heavier the line.

Straight fluoro for paddle tail swimbaits and most worm fishing 14lb.

Spinnerbaits are the only bait I will fish with no thought to what line type to use

Wow thanks for all the feedback! Any other thoughts? There’s a lot of variety. I’m leaning towards using fluoro more but just worried about more backlash issues.

Invest in quality fluorocarbon once and it won’t be an issue. I can only vouch for Invizx at the moment but this coming season I will be trying out Daiwa samurai. I tried Abrazx, it was good but the Invizx felt much more manageable.

May be a dumb question, but I notice a lot of pros use straight fluoro a lot (wheeler, Evers, blaukat…). What’s the reason that we all don’t try to copy them since they are at the top of the game?

3 spinning rigs. 1 with 8# xl , 2 with 15# braid / 6# floro leader (d/s and fluke / senko), 1 bc w/ 65# braid (frog / pike), 1 bc with 14# co-poly (jig / worm) , and 4 bc with 12# xl (most baits) and 1 bc with 10#xl (cranks).  No line conditioner needed.

Sufix 832 50 lb for everything . I only use casting gear.fish neds on it also.yellow braid with last 6 feet markered black. No need for leaders IMHO. I've tried all different lines and keep coming back to this.

Ditto this for me (Seaguar) ^^ except I did spool one caster with Big Game this year for topwaters mostly. First time in a decade ?

Several reasons from what I can tell. First, most guys aren’t good enough casters to be able to use fluoro well. Probably the number one complaint you read on these forums about fluoro (unmanageable, birds nests, line conditioner, etc.). Then you have the skeptics that think the pros only use fluoro because they get it for free, and the line companies only push it because of profitability. Then there is the argument over its shock absorption, knot strength, susceptibility to kinking/breaking. Then there are the braid/sensitivity guys that get themselves trapped. Pretty much covers most of it.

You just have to go with what is most comfortable or beneficial to you. Every line has positives and negatives that can be argued. Your fishing - so you have to be happy with it.
