CrashVector Posted December 2, 2021 Posted December 2, 2021 Got my new reel today. Instantly love it. Everyone here knows I'm a HUGE Abu Garcia fan. HOWEVER What. The. Hell is wrong with Abu NOT putting any kind of grease on their reel's gears?!?! Seriously. My new Max pro spinning reel? Zero grease. Zero. The new Revo SX? Zero grease. Any time I buy an Abu reel, the first thing I do is take it apart. I feel people shouldn't have to do that when they buy a $150 reel. I still love their equipment...the Revo series especially are SUPER smooth, but honestly...put some d**n grease on your reels before you sell them, Abu. 2 Quote

newapti5 Posted December 2, 2021 Posted December 2, 2021 The grease probably dried up. The SX series has been in the market for several years. They have been sitting on shelfs or in warehouses since they're manufactured. Try the newest freshly-made models; it might be a different story. 1 Quote

It's a recent trend it seems amongst all the major manufacturers not to ship their reels with grease. 1 Quote

Do you think Doyo has the capability to make a better reel for other manufacturers than the Doyo branded reels? Kenmore washing machines were rated higher than the comparable Whirlpool, and we know Whirlpool made the Kenmore's. Quote

I would think it would be purely based upon what specification is provided to DOYO from the customer (Abu, Lews, etc.) for what they want in each model? Frame material, gear material, components, physical attributes (colors, logo printing, etc.) Previous post mentioned some of these models (and any mfg. for that matter) could potentially have the same OOB issues due to lack of inventory turning. OP - Your like me; anything new gets broken down, inspected, fine tuned, to my personal standards. Really no different than anyone that might buy a stock, new vehicle. Some are fine with the stock model while some like to fine tune variables. Quote

Very true, but I'd be pretty annoyed if I tried to drive my new vehicle off the lot only to find they never put oil in it. 2 Quote

I will agree with Crash Vector in the sense that someone who doesn’t know better could cause some damage without adding grease/oil. 1 Quote
zell_pop1 Posted December 3, 2021 Posted December 3, 2021 Doyo reels can be pretty good. I usually buy reels in the $100-150 range like the original Daiwa Tatula and Tatula CTs, Shimano Citica D,E,G and a few Curados on sale and I found the Korean made Doyo Pflueger reels in this range like the Asaro/President were just as reliable, smooth and cast as far(Daiwa TWing reels seem easier at pitching). Granted these reels were made in the 2010-15 and it is hard to say if quality has remained the same. 1 Quote
Phil77 Posted December 3, 2021 Posted December 3, 2021 I have a dozen Lews reels and all of them came ready to fish out of the box, even the brake ring on the centrifugal models come oiled. I thought daiwa Thailand was the only one shipping dry reels. Quote

It is one of my favorite spinning reels on the market. Quote
70diesel Posted December 17, 2021 Posted December 17, 2021 If you have a left handed baitcaster revo sx, put a small piece of tape on the side plate release lever. It's a design flaw and possible to flip the lever while fishing and the side plate will fall off. I had an Abu rep tell me this so I did it. The tape came off eventually and I wasn't really concerned anymore about the side plate coming off and sure as ****, I hit it one day and watched the side plate fall into the water....she gone. Quote

Does the release lever come loose, or just flipping it while fishing? Mine is a right hand model Quote
Super User FishTank Posted December 18, 2021 Super User Posted December 18, 2021 Lews/Abu (Doyo) have different factories in different countries I believe > Korea, China, Malaysia and Thailand (I might be off on Thailand for US though). Check the sticker on the bottom of the reel for the country of origin. I have noticed that some factories put way too much grease and some none at all and some have a spray or dip on the whole reel. For examples, I have worked on few and owned one Lew's Mach Crush. The one that came in the blister pack (red and black?) was loaded with grease and oil, and the one that came in the box (green and black, SLP?) had none> one is made in Malaysia and the other in Korea. 2 Quote
70diesel Posted December 19, 2021 Posted December 19, 2021 Somehow you will flip the release lever while fishing and the side plate will fall off. I didn't see how that would be possible then it happened and I still don't understand how it happened. I'm not sure if it's possible with the right handed model but definitely is on the left handed model. It was really a challenge to find a replacement side plate. Quote

zell_pop1 Posted December 21, 2021 Posted December 21, 2021 Looking at bass pro's site the Revo MGX is on sale for $250 but alot of the reviews complain about the side plate so it is probably not just problematic for leftys. Quote
