DanielG Posted February 6, 2020 Posted February 6, 2020 My first Rattle jerkbait. I like how this one turned out. I made everything on it... woohoo! Wonder if it will catch fish? 5 Quote
DanielG Posted February 15, 2020 Posted February 15, 2020 This is... number 5 or 6 I think. Still tryin' Another bait leaves the shop. This one is a Roach bait. A fish only seen in Europe and Asia as I understand it. But it looked so good I had to make one. After making a handful of baits I think this one came out great. New skills with this one, more detailed carving and use of fluorescent paints. As usual, everything is handmade, the body, the eyes, eyelets, etc. The video on this one is only fifteen minutes long. 2 Quote
DanielG Posted February 20, 2020 Posted February 20, 2020 New bait... strange one this time. Fashioned (very loosely) after a Goa'uld symbiote from Stargate SG-1 (a TV show with 10 seasons under it's belt). Just having some fun.... Wonder if the Bass watch that show? If they do they won't get near it. You can view the build video here 3 Quote

DanielG Posted February 22, 2020 Posted February 22, 2020 Skunk Fly with a little help from Walmart Okay, don't laugh.... I tied my first fly today just for the fun of it. It took about 30 minutes so you can see not a whole lot of effort put in on my part. I'm actually not much of a fly fisherman. I had eyes around that I use on my hardbaits. And a rusty hook the right size in the bottom of my tackle box. The rest of the stuff pretty much came from the craft area at Walmart. The head has a drop of UV resin on it to hold things together. Just thought I'd try it so see what happens. The wife has already christened it the "skunk fly". She finds the humor in a lot of things... mostly me. She also says it looks like Beaker on the muppets. You're laughing aren't you......? 3 Quote
Super User fishwizzard Posted February 22, 2020 Super User Posted February 22, 2020 I went a bit insane at the recent fishingskirts.com sale, should have enough 1/4oz jigs to last me a few seasons. I am working one three colors, a GP baitfish, a Blue/Black, and a GB/Amber. The GP Baitfish needs another half tab on top, the one pictured is just a proof of concept. No idea why everything is upside down. 5 Quote

Patrick Reif Posted February 28, 2020 Posted February 28, 2020 This is my first attempt at a bluegill pattern. I overcomplicated the build and will tone it down in the future. I put the Rage tail on the back to act like a tail. I'm curious how that will run. I'm thinking about cutting down the wire form and making a chatterbait out of it. A couple twists at the nose secures the blade nicely. I've never had one fail if there are at least two full twists. 6 Quote
DanielG Posted February 29, 2020 Posted February 29, 2020 My first fly with real materials. Not great, but a good start. With better feather choices I think I can do better. 4 Quote

If you plan on really getting into this hobby I would recommend a rotating vise, it will make your tying experience much more enjoyable. Have you checked out Barlows Tackle for material? I get hackle from them and the prices are good as well as the material. Quote

I figured I'd tie a few before I made that move. If I got one I'd want to get a better one but need to be sure the expense will be used. They seem to come in two varieties. Very low priced and very high priced. I'd imagine there must be a difference. Thanks for the barlows tip. It's hard to decide where some decent stuff is just from looking at pictures online. Quote
Harold Scoggins Posted February 29, 2020 Posted February 29, 2020 I've used a couple and am now using a Griffin Spider. They say it will take a 4/0 hook, but I've found it will hold a 5/0 no problem. Griffin has been making vises for years and if a part breaks they will replace it. I think I got mine on sale for $75 and my brother picked one up for $68 during the Black Friday sales. Once you use a vise with the rotating feature you'll never use another. Quote
DanielG Posted February 29, 2020 Posted February 29, 2020 Thanks... it's on my list then when I go to look for one. Quote

Baitmaker Posted March 17, 2020 Posted March 17, 2020 Here's a homemade single bladebait mold and a few of the ones I've poured with it so far. These ones are powder coated. Just messing around with something different. 10 Quote
Mbirdsley Posted March 18, 2020 Posted March 18, 2020 First run with the do-it poison tail mold. I bought the One that does the larger sizes 1/2-1oz. Mold poured really well right out of the box. Only thing I didn’t do that I want to do in the future is coat the jigs with devcon 2-ton epoxy. I did epoxy the eyes but, just used house brand 5 minute epoxy. I don’t know why the images are sideways. On my phone they are right side up 3 Quote
