Anyone have experience with casting dropshotting marabou DS hooks for smallmouth in cold water? If so, have you weighted the hook shank with plastic plus plastic keeper/bobber stop without messing up the presentation/decreasing your results?

Are you talking about fishing a dressed dropshot hook as a float-n-fly?

@smalljaw67  Yes. A marabou dressed drop shot hook, but I have only casted on a traditional dropshot setup. Was not planning on a float-n-fly for a set depth. I've used the casting drop shot to maintain the same depth above the bottom while maintaining bottom contact.

At the only lake I have access to smallmouth fishing on a boat, it works fine without tipping the hook with plastic for casting distance.

The plastic tipped hook is specifically for maximizing distance will shore fishing a local man-made smallie water, as I'm intending to minimize the weight of the dropshot weight. Sorry, I'm probably just being silly with the brain. I've caught largies shore fishing this place with plastic tipped, but no smallies, and I'm usually catching 50/50 with other techniques.

I'm definitely interested in float-n-fly for it's niche purpose. Feel free to school me.

This is interesting to me. You're adding weight to the hook...on a drop shot rig?

When I think of drop shot, I think of weight on the end of the line and the - in this case - marabou hook with additional weight on it tied onto the main line above the weight? Is this the rig I think you're explaining?

Sorry for the questions, just trying to visualize what you're doing to open up the dialog for you.

Sorry for the miscommunication. Elaztech for buoyancy and increased casting distance.

I have tied and fished streamer patterns with the drop-shot technique.  I found I needed to VERY SLIGHTLY weight the streamer hook to eliminate the bait from orienting vertically.

Ah, I see what you're doing now. Makes sense.

I don't have many smallie waters, but have used a similar set-up for my saltwater friends. Although, I would think a C-Rig/mojo rig may serve you well. The longer the cast on a drop-shot the closer to the bottom you're bait is. It becomes more vertical the more line you bring in. The C-Rig/mojo rig would have more consistency, I would think.

I'm not poo poo on the DS, because I have done exactly as you are, I'm just spit ballin here.

I would guess like anything, you'd probably want to slow your presentation down and use a plastic that doesn't have a lot of appendages.

Thanks for the idea. Huge fan of mojo rig, especially for easy length adjustment.  I'll see if I can configure a good aerodynamic setup and lasso far enough to get to the smallies from shore in April. Love/hate relationship with the c-rig ?

I can certainly relate...good luck mi amigo

I have used the marabou dressed drop-shot hook by jigmasters in the past. I have had some success but I feel that in almost every situation the powerbait maxscent flatworm, hit worm, or flatnose minnow is about as good as gold on a drop-shot.

Gotcha. I have some jigmasters too. Hey, they look good in the water, right!? I was testing out the cast ability on shore this past week. After committing for an hour I went back to plastic to get the only bite of the day. I’m sure I’ll experience the same on big water next year and resort back to the confidence plastics as well……….probably same goes for 90% of Black Friday order. You’d think I’d learn from the same experience every year. Oh well. On winter days, it’s fun to stare at the board of new baits when we’re froze over and then lay in bed and strategize about next year while my wife blabs about some meaningless bs.
