Supplemental Pro Tip ~

Seems recently, so are most of the 'news agencies'.

Surprised this thread still has legs...

Funnily enough this thread reminded me to check my bank account and credit card statements. So I went to check my bank account/credit card.

And what do I see? A $900 purchase at “stadium goods” which was completed on Monday. That wasn’t me. Everything will be ok but it’s just the hassle of having to call to close the card and get the charge removed.

Stay safe BR!

Edit: Also reminded me to put steps in place to prevent this from happening again and if it does, to catch it the moment it happens.

Anytime I hear someone mention any type of information with the words Facebook attached to it I automatically dismiss it and then never take  that person  seriously afterwards.

Smart…

So true.

It didn't happen on the black friday sale, but I did happen to order some things from tackle warehouse a week or so before and my information was stolen and they did, in fact, try to buy crypto currency with it. Not saying tackle warehouse is to blame, but that's what happened to me.

I will check my card again and if it got hacked, fair or not that will be my last purchase from TW which would be a bummer. Seeing some people also posting on Instagram about this as well. Poster that put it out there used to be on BR a bit too as a BR writer.

Exactly! One of the main reasons I'll never have a facebook account.

I deleted mine about three months ago.  It's nothing but fake/troll accounts and Russian bots now.

You may be right or coincidence? It’s anyones guess with the way data breaches are going.
I worked for a TN based company over 10 years ago when they had and office up here and last month they notified me that they had a data breach and provided resources to protect me.
I’m still using visa gift card I buy at a local store to use for online purchases in amounts closed what I think I’m going to buy. To me, that’s the best insurance policy I can give myself these days when I buy online.

I have no clue, just reading the replies. I don’t buy jack squat on the internet. Maybe one gift per year if my wife sends me a link to what she wants for Christmas. She used to want me to surprise her but I strategically messed that up a few times, now she just tells me exactly what she wants. Even then I can usually walk into REI and grab it haha

Never had a card compromised and I've had one since they first came out. Low and behold, my credit union's fraud detection unit called this morning! Someone attempted to use my card at two places, $100.00 each. Nothing Tackle Warehouse related and thankfully my c/u caught it and shut down my account.

I'm going to take the advice in this thread and get a card at Walmart that I can load money into. I'm older, and not real tech savvy so I have a question. I understand that when I get the card, I can load money into it initially. My question is reloading the card. Do I go back to Walmart to do it? I'm sure it can be done online, but that seems to defeat the purpose. Please advise.

I'm going to the c/u in the morning to get a new card and get them to reopen my account. I'm going to ask if they have such a card.

In the last 24 hours both mine and my wife’s credit cards have been compromised. Tackle warehouse is one of the few common vendors. I made an order last night and my wife bought some gifts last week. In addition my fathers card was also compromised last week and he’d also ordered from TW. There’s no way to prove it but does seem suspect.

I belong to a credit union as well. The few times my card has been compromised, they have been fantastic. While the cancellations have been an inconvenience, they have caught the fraudulent activity quickly.

I’m a software developer and would like add some thoughts.  Yes hacking is a big problem.  In the last week there have been two major vulnerabilities found that the IT world is scrambling to fix.  In the last 3 years I’ve probably spent 75% of my time at work trying to harden our security.

Avoiding the Internet doesn’t make you any less vulnerable.  Target taught us this a few years ago.  When a retailer scans your card it goes into a system that can just as easily be hacked as Tackle Warehouse.  Buying gift cards seems like a very bad idea to me.  They can also get hacked and you probably won’t know it until you realize that the balance you thought you had is gone.

What I do is set up my credit card account to send me a text every time my card is used.  I also use Apple Pay when I can.  You don’t have to pay for unauthorized use of your card so it’s your bank that’s taking the risk.

Also,  I’ve had my credit card stored on Tackleware for years and I have never had a problem.

That doesnt mean others havent had TW problems. TW has admitted to card info being acquired.

Just an FYI:

I have my card set up to alert me every time it's used.

I ordered several items online from tw during the Black Friday sale.  I haven't ordered anything else online since summer, or since bf.

This past Thursday, my card alerted me to two attempted purchases, one in west Virginia, and one in Kentucky.  Both were less than $5...people "testing" it to see if it worked.

I immediately locked the card, cancelled it, and ordered a new card.

Coincidence? Maybe...but the timing is highly suspect imo.

Anyone having trouble using PayPal at TW?

Also, right now and for the past hour or so, TW website is offline.  Don't know if it's scheduled maintenance or what, but kinda weird ...

No,  I've bought several TW gift cards in the last couple of weeks.  What I'm saying is that they can also be hacked.   Putting a lot of money on a VISA gift card and using it as a credit card so you don't have to use your credit card seems risky to me.  I don't know of any way to get a text when one is used.   Remember when you hand you credit card/debit card/gift card to a waiter at a restaurant,  there is nothing preventing them from writing down your number and using it later.   I can't make my credit card 100% secure.  I just want to know as soon as possible when someone else is using it so I can respond quickly.
